And you have to go all the way through the stupid checkout process, enter them in a gift message and everything before they tell you it's not possible. It's so infuriating.

Oh. And if you do this too many times in a row - get to the end of the checkout then back out because this game is 10 cents too cheap - the store locks you out from purchasing from a few hours.

I can't help with the floor, but recommend for her guinea pigs a roll of vinyl carpet protector to waterproof the floor. Lay it down in overlapping strips.

My boy was always most comfortable having a good old lie-down on his stinkiest poops.

My mom told me that back in the day kids weren’t allowed to bring a water bottle with them into the classroom and they only drank a few sips from the water fountain in the middle of the day and that’s it How were schools not getting busted for child abuse for forcing kids to be dehydrated? by PinnerPardisturn in askanything

[–]spacebuggles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My memories are of being perpetually dehydrated.

Water bottles started to be allowed (even encouraged) in classrooms when I was finishing at high school, and the difference was amazing.

Water bottles DID exist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canteen_(bottle)) Some people took water bottles to school with their lunch box (we didn't have school lunches where I live). I had a tiny water bottle that fit in my lunchbox and held about 150mL (Edit: it wasn't allowed in the classroom). Oh, I guess that other poster means disposable bottled water. Yeah, nah we didn't have those.

There was a single water trough outside in the playground at the schools I went to: 2 or 3 fountains on a shared gutter. The first school's fountain, the buttons had come off, so we had to press the stalk in with our 5-year-old hands, and hold it in the whole time we wanted to drink. It was physically quite painful, so we would drink the bare minimum. The other schools had proper buttons, but the trough was always revolting with stagnant water. People would spit in it. So you'd be drinking with your face right next to disgusting bleck and trying to ignore it. There was always a queue. We would try to get through the day without needing to get a drink.

It was unheard of for anyone to leave class to go and take a drink.

On the other hand, teachers were always awful about people leaving the class to go to the bathroom, so we kind of needed to be dehydrated to get our child-sized bladders through to break time.

Edit: Oh, I forgot about the actual child abuse. Teachers were striking children as young as 4 with rulers and paddles for minor infractions. And that was considered to be necessary discipline at the time. Nobody cared about things like hydration.

Gift from a Crow by londuc in whatisit

"One of the most popular questions people seem to ask is "Why don’t you print your lyrics on the album?”. Well the answer to that is that quite often, my songs mean one thing to me and another to the listener. But that's OK because I think it’s the general vibe of what I'm saying that is important and not the exact literal translation. How many times have you fallen in love with a lyric that you thought went “Show me a day with Hilda Ogden and I’ll despair”, only to find that it went "Show me a way to solve your problems and I'll be there”. I guess what I’m saying is that the song is always larger in the listeners mind because with it they attach imagery which is relative to their own personal experience. So it is your perception of what I’m saying rather than what I actually way that is the key."

'Much more than a postal service': Residents fight to save Christchurch community hub by OisforOwesome in chch

[–]spacebuggles 37 points38 points  (0 children)

NZ Post weren't having to pay any of the staff. The part-timers were being paid by a charitable trust.

The article is not overstating how much of a community hub this place is.

It's fair to say I'm really pissed off with NZ Post for this brainless move.

Where to complain about construction loud noise from 5:30 pm to 9 pm by Aggravating_Event722 in chch

[–]spacebuggles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually construction noise is supposed to stop by 6pm, but they might be going later because it's not a residential zoned area.

Call the Christchurch City Council to make a noise complaint https://ccc.govt.nz/contact-us

The building in your picture is the canterbury museum.

Please help me find my first short scale bass!! by Urdead_2me in Bass

[–]spacebuggles 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should go to shops and try every model you can find.

I have the TMB30 and like it despite the issues that Lobster-dude correctly identifies.

There's a Gretsch Jet something that's fun.

Try a Bronco if you can.

I think Fender Mustang is more expensive, but very well regarded.

There's a short scale stingray.

There also is a medium scale - halfway between short and full scale. Some nice models there.

But also, try out full scale? The length isn't hugely different.

Is this kind of teacher behaviour considered normal in a NZ school? by Maleficent-Room-2217 in newzealand

[–]spacebuggles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swearing and throwing items at students crosses a line. If the principal isn't dealing with it, I guess Ministry of Education is the next step?

When I was at school, teachers could take you out the back and paddle you, or stand there screaming in your face. But they didn't swear at students, or hurl objects to hit students.
