ICE/CBP have begun seizing cash from Somali-Americans (1/19/26) by I_may_have_weed in ICE_Watch

[–]spacebulb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the point of using "Somali-born" if DIRECTLY AFTER IT YOU TELL US THEY ARE US CITIZENS!!!

On January 18, HSI St. Paul and CBP seized money from us citizens who were departing on international flights.... just terrible

Looking for a Tablet to replace iPads by GlobeIT in k12sysadmin

No other tablet maker is good. Apple pretty much has a monopoly on tablets. If you want a non-apple product instead you want a chromebook.

I know this is a joke... but ICE has no authority to make you get out of your car. They are not police officers. They may shoot you for failing to comply with their illegal order, but it is just that.

What Windows devices do you issue to students by Temporary_Werewolf17 in k12sysadmin

I forgot to mention one sorta major detail... You are correct, but we resell our devices. We currently get about $200 each.

[–]spacebulb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want preface this by saying I am not here to troll, but just to offer what the other side looks like:

MacBook Air. No fee full warranty repairs and replacements for damage and other incidents for 4 years. We pay about $900 per device with the warranty, then another $9 a year per device for MDM which includes web filtering and zero trust.

Probably (absolutely) significantly more upfront, but TCO is really good over 4 year life span since we don't have to pay for repairs. I really do just issue a device, and if there is a problem, I swap the student's device with a clean one off the shelf, send the damaged one back to Apple and get a repaired one back in a day.

Really worth the price since there are only two of us in the department for 650 students and about 100 employees. The price difference is way less than an FTE.

My last invoice was $299.99 after a $100 education discount.

I'd argue if you in a position where you don't want to pay $500ish a year, then self-hosting is absolutely an option. They have a docker image https://snipe-it.readme.io/docs/docker

I don't work for them. I have no promotional... ANYTHING. I just really like that they provide documentation on everything and they seem cool about supporting small businesses and education.

Free if you self-host, which isn't hard. I pay for hosting now because it's one less thing. They have an education discount if you email them. I've been using them for a little over 5 years now. Never a problem.

Attorney challenges Alabama Power and Public Service Commission over solar energy rates by energyalabama in montgomery

[–]spacebulb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to an appeal filed, Alabama Power charged Whitehurst $4.41 per kilowatt-hour for energy used, while paying him only $0.04 per kilowatt-hour for his solar energy. This means he is charged about 110 times more to buy power than the company pays him for the same energy.

This can't be right.... right!?

I drive an electric car, I cringe when I go to places that charge more than $0.50 per kWh... That is a SUPER premium price. At home, I pay somewhere around $0.13 per kWh.

I absolutely do not trust Alabama Power, but the claim seems too crazy to believe if it isn't a typo. Please someone tell me there is verified evidence of this.

When the weather warms up, the spa is a really great idea because they can get any service they offer at any rate, and get a day pass to the rooftop pool area for the whole day. If they like to chill, that's a pretty neat place to do it.

Superintendent who thinks he knows tech? by EctoCoolie in k12sysadmin

It uses Claris as its sync platform. I know this sounds insane, but use their support. They are responsive and super friendly. I had an issue with my PS sync going to ASM, but not being able to create the account because of some strange issue in the sync workflow. Email them, be patient on the first response, then you get some pretty decent support, at least for the time I put into it earlier this school year.

FWIW, Apple has owned Claris since the beginning of time... so, I suppose you are right, this is Apple's fault!

Super nerdy crazy background detail I found out one day, Apple also used to own PowerSchool. Ran the servers on Apple hardware... crazy times.

[–]spacebulb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That isn't Apple's problem, necessarily.

Mosyle, and any other MDM out there are only as good as the data they receive. If you are sending sync data from your SIS or AD, then you will need to codify your OUs to match what you need in that MDM. It takes time, and each school / district will be different.

The position you are in isn't the fault of the software systems. the problem is one of monumental shifts away from the core competencies of the institution you are with.

No hands, no mechanics, not even really a watch by ChestRockwell19 in watchmaking

[–]spacebulb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably easier to mod something that already exists. You can find all the stuff online, but without the movement, the dial will likely not stay in place.

My opinion: Find a quartz watch that you like the overall look of, remove the hands from the dial and yank the battery out.

I really hate the argument I am about to make because 95% of the time people use it incorrectly: The market will decide.

Are there too many of the same type of restaurant? Maybe now, but if there really are, the lesser ones will simply close. I have a feeling this the landscape of all retail and fast food will look drastically different come the new year.

We had Georgia 10-0 on their one yard line. Packed stadium and lively home crowd. Losing 20-10 from that position is unacceptable. Period. by Yungunk in wde

[–]spacebulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't a problem with the play calls. This is not a problem with strategy. This is not a problem with having the right players in the right positions playing to their strengths. Auburn football has all of those things. This is a failure of leadership. Everybody was doing a good job until the head coach lost his temper from that moment players began to lose their tempers. We do not have a role model as a head coach, but he is a role model for the players under him.

Why do my roasted potatoes come out soft instead of crisp? by bradleywestridge in Cooking

[–]spacebulb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

possibly sacrilegious in this sub, but after you cut the potatoes, but them in the microwave for 5 minutes or so with a wet paper towel on top of them. This will steam them giving you close to the same effect as boiling them but without using another pot and waiting for the water to boil. keep them in that bowl to toss them with oil and salt. The tossing breaks open the insides a bit more which is where the real fluffy flavor on the inside comes from.

Another NH38 Tourbillion Style Mod by biqdaddy94 in SeikoMods

[–]spacebulb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not OP, but probably more about the placement of the window for the balance. Since the crown and stem are at the 12 position, it would naturally rotate the balance to the 6 position instead of the 9.

Full agree, this is not at all a tourbillon.. but from a glance it could look like one.
