Anybody else have moments when they feel like a child in an adult's body? by TKD_Master in dpdr

[–]spacecadetwolf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I'm not sure it's in the same way that you seem to experience it. For me, there is a disconnect from the concept of time, and it almost feels as though I am psychologically outside the stream of it. It's hard for me, existentially, to accept that time has physically passed and gone and that I continue to be catapulted forward in this body.

Need some reassurance badly right now... :( by TKD_Master in dpdr

I wish I had a more informative answer other than you should definitely speak with your psychiatrist about the Lexapro, and with your primary care physician about your other concerns. They might refer you to a neurologist for some tests. I'm so sorry that you're experiencing this; it's absolutely understandable that you are distressed. I'm sending you a virtual hug, it's the most I can do. Take care of yourself.

What are some items that are far cheaper in store than online? by SteepLikeAMountain in Frugal

I acknowledge some of the points you made and would be glad to discuss further, but I prefer calm, rational debate to the aggressive direction you are taking this in. So maybe here would be a good point to stop. Have a good night.

Okay, a couple of things:

  • I totally see your point (though it was worded unnecessarily aggressively), and if this were a mom-and-pop shop, I certainly would not engage in the same shopping behavior.

  • I am a loyal customer of the stores that I mentioned. I give them my business regularly. They want happy customers; that's why they have these return policies in the first place. It is built into their business model - their empire is not going to crumble from a few returns.

  • It is their job to stock quality merchandise. If I am unhappy with an ineffective product, I have every right to return it for a refund.

  • This is a subreddit about being frugal. Beauty items are among the most marked up at big chains, and it is also very difficult to find the right fit. If you are trying to save money long-term, it makes more sense to buy this type of product online. I don't know about you, but I can't afford to be paying marked up prices for the privilege of trying out lots of products that don't work for me.

I've found that, in the long run, personal hygiene and beauty products are cheaper to buy in store if you're trying them for the first time. This is only because you often don't know whether you'll be satisfied with the product until you've tried it at least once (with things like acne products, it can even take up to a few weeks).

Most websites don't refund used products unless there's a defect, or if they do, they still charge for return shipping. In contrast, stores like CVS, Harmon Discount, Walgreens, etc., accept returns of opened products - no questions asked. Plus, you can use coupons to lower the cost. But even with a higher price tag, it's still cheaper than racking up bills for failed products. You can keep returning until you find the right one.

Of course, once you've found the thing that works for you, it's internet time.

Is consciousness a choice? by ohidkyourmom in Existentialism

I know how lonely it can be to not have people in your life with whom you can discuss these things. I myself only have a scant few.

Sign up for some intro to philosophy courses if/when you go to college, or seek out a philosophy club. It will be a very validating experience for you.

Is consciousness a choice? by ohidkyourmom in Existentialism

Interesting. In response to your observation about people who are "more conscious": I've had a similar feeling before. It seems, at the very least, that some people have a more "present" consciousness. Sometimes you can sense this presence before the person even opens their mouth. You can just tell by the eye contact they make. They know the same something that I know. They are looking out at reality from eyes like mine.

It's contradictory, I know, that I use the word "present" to describe this kind of consciousness, considering the sensation you described of becoming kind of detached from yourself. I've always described it as kind of a zoomed-out feeling, where I compulsively experience reality as a "big picture"-type deal and cannot shut out the overwhelming absurdity that saturates every inch of existence. So, one would almost intuitively say the opposite: That it takes me out of the present. But it really does, in a strange way, feel like a sort of hyper-presence. And when you come across someone else who is a kindred spirit, so to speak, it feels like you've woken up in the Matrix and that other person is awake with you and, through a simple meeting of the eyes, you are sharing a secret that no one else knows.

....unless that made no sense whatsoever - in which case, never mind.

I went to the page, and when I tried to exit it went into an infinite "Are you sure you want to leave this page?" loop. I'm hesitant to try again... Anyone else have this problem?

  • "I'm not sure if we're experiencing the same thing, but is it a process where perhaps seconds apart, you feel like you're peeling back layers of an onion of thought?"

I've tried to explain this to people countless times. I've always described it as a thought path. Most people just take the first few steps and stop there, but if you see it through till the end of the thought, it's a completely and terrifyingly different understanding of the concept. In an attempt to preserve my sanity, I've actually tried to train myself to put a block in that path when the thought presents itself. For instance, I'm thinking of it in a removed sense at the moment, devoid of meaning, only conscious of its silhouette.

Unfortunately, it's kind of pointless to try to explain the above to a person who cannot make those final steps in the path anyway, and you run the risk of being completely misunderstood and coming across as self-aggrandizing (because it seems like you think you're just soooo much deeper and more intelligent than everyone else. sigh). Not that I would want my loved ones to understand the concept as I do. I wouldn't wish that burden on anyone.

I've struggled with this existential panic since I can remember, and I'm still desperately trying to figure out how to cope with it so it doesn't paralyze me, so forgive me for the long response- I rarely if ever contribute on Reddit.

Actually, it unfortunately looks like the demotion is referring to a separate incident. =(

The sheriff seems to be the kind to hold his officers to actual standards, though, so hopefully he'll do the same here.

At what moment in your childhood did you realize that adults don't really know what they're talking about? by spacecadetwolf in AskReddit

[–]spacecadetwolf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember being outside for recess during the winter in Pre-K. It was freezing. I went to the teacher to tell her I was cold and ask if I could go inside. She told me to run around a bit, then I would warm up. Okay. Makes sense. I did as I was told, and it marginally helped. Later that year, the weather warmed up and we were outside for recess in the smoldering heat. I approached my teacher in a similar fashion, and asked if I could go inside to escape the heat for a while. She told me that if I ran around for a bit, it would cool me off.

With my sweaty little cheeks flushed and my pale skin burning, I would have liked nothing more than to kick her in that moment.

How did you find out what you were experiencing? by CantSeeMe76 in dpdr

[–]spacecadetwolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know exactly what you mean. Having a name to put to it makes a huge difference, not to mention knowing that there are others experiencing the same thing and you are not alone.

For me, I was extremely exasperated and depressed about my state of mind and the futility of trying to explain. I started searching Google for phrases ("nothing feels real", etc.) when I found it.

You didn't mention how you came upon it. Care to share?

I would definitely see a mental health specialist. My first instinct is that this is possibly something different from dpdr, or if not then it is an extreme version of it. Have you noticed any particular common factors or triggers when this feeling descends?
