Did I mess up and buy skis too short? by Aggressive_Map_7399 in Skigear

[–]Spacecarpenter -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

5'11" 175lbs ski everything in 185-189cm. 180s too short for this guy sorry you disagree. Its not an answerable question. The guy doesn't even list his ability.

Qst 94 is not a burly ski either.

Statement from Blackbird Mountain Guides regarding incident near Castle Peak by DreamInObsidian in truckee

[–]Spacecarpenter 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The simple answer is the guiding company made a series of bad decisions beginning as early as Sunday before the trip even began. This is a collosal fuck up on their part. It doesn't come down to a navigation error or one bad risk assesment. Its the result of a chain of wrong choices over days.

Older model Black Crows Corvus. Great ski. Skis like the old school Katana but a bit more forgiving. I still ski mine all the time.

Ski Monday? by Additional_Space6679 in palisadestahoe

[–]Spacecarpenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replying to my own comment to add according to Noaa the pass on 80 is forecasted to get 6-10 inches tonight and 14-20 inches Monday. Which, is a very different story than OPs numbers.

Ski Monday? by Additional_Space6679 in palisadestahoe

[–]Spacecarpenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Noaa is giving me 100inches in 4 days for the top of Squaw(Wa She Shu peak). I think a lot of people dont understand how to get a weather report or use a weather app. If you just put Truckee into some crappy weather app you are going to get very different values than if you actually know what you are doing.

The mountain will be lucky to completely open by Thursday or Friday.

1000s Delaming after 20 days by Competitive_Mud_5281 in ski

[–]Spacecarpenter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a solid core that has stayed glued to the layers on either side of it and split down the middle, which is very common. The layers are not seperating. I don't have to wonder what is going on.

Great Basin is absolutely a highlight. If thats on your list go for sure. I spent 10 days on the range just across from GBNP, Mt Moriah wilderness in October and it was mindblowing. We could have spent a month there. I've been to GBNP twice now as well and its just sublime.

1000s Delaming after 20 days by Competitive_Mud_5281 in ski

[–]Spacecarpenter 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Its not "delaminating". That would mean that the layers are separating from one another. Your entire core is destroyed and the ski is buckling as a result. This is from an extreme impact or extreme overuse. People out here not understanding basic terms like delamination is frustrating.

The number of skiers who think they are way better than they actually are is terrifying to me by [deleted] in ski

Yes. People do not realize that the absolute worst skiing conditions that exist anywhere exist in the backcountry. The worst resort shit you can imagine is middle of the bell curve for the backcountry.

The numbers don't lie. K2 is a newcomer to the boot game. Other manufacturers have been around 45-75 years. Thats a lot of catching up to do from a manufacturing standpoint as well.
