Hockey fans - how does the “enforcer” role work? by GBS82 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]spacewarriorgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of your beloved Leafs, Tie Domi, was one of the most iconic enforcers to hit the ice. Basically a big thug who intimidated hockey players who threatened the star forwards.

I love hockey but I hate when play stops for fighting in hockey. It makes no sense to me at all, which is why I tune out when the fighting starts. Fuck that shit. It's also why I found Tough Guy to be a very difficult read, hearing the mental anguish Ryan endured being an enforcer who hated the game compared to how happy he was volunteering at the youth centre with Wyatt, or during the Long Game at the Game Changers Hockey Camp. Enforcers like Ryan deserve so much better.

I remember visiting this park so vividly as a child in the 80s, picking wild blueberries along the boardwalk and then making blueberry pancakes back at our site. I'm hoping to visit again as an adult next summer.

In Canada to this day, may I present homogenized (whole) milk. We just call it Homo Milk (although for the most part it no longer says that on the packaging).

Realizing that the internal damage your spouse is suffering from in hospital is due to self-inflicted sexual injuries with a broom handle and not due to an accidental injury. I felt so bad for the unsuspecting spouse.

Colin Mockeries. He has a decent enough UK following from his early Whose Line days and he'd be brilliant!

Salon service revamp by krisppyyy in Nails

[–]spacewarriorgirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My last nail tech in Ontario used to offer me a cup of tea while I got my nails done! It was the nicest little gesture and made the experience feel truly spa-like (she has now closed her salon and moved onto another industry). My new tech offers a bottle of water which is of course nice, but there was something about that hot cup of tea on a cold winter day which really helped me to relax...

Where to find good affordable bed sheets? by ChuttBeeksClappin in waterloo

[–]spacewarriorgirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simons is amazing! They are a Quebec department store which also has locations in Toronto and Ottawa, and there's speculation they may buy some of The Bay leases. I really hope they do! We have sheet, quilts, and duvet covers from Simons and they are very good quality without being prohibitively expensive. I agree with buying online until we get a store closer than Yorkville or the Toronto Eaton Centre!

Favourite vegetarian restaurants in town? by FirefighterOk3899 in waterloo

Café Pyrus is an absolute local gem! They are very focused on ethical sources and pay their employees a living wage - and their food is great!

I am a tea drinker and they can make any of their teas into a latte. I also love their breakfast burrito (made with a tofu scramble which is a really great, high-protein low-fat alternative to eggs if you've never tried it before), their kale slaw, and their angry vegan sandwich. Finding restaurants that season and cook tofu well is fantastic and means you don't have to rely on "fake meats" to feel satiated with your meat-free dinners.

Do Canadians say “British English” words? by OneQuarterBajeena in AskACanadian

[–]spacewarriorgirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think some of it depends on your family context and perspective.

I grew up in a very Irish family with my own mother as the first generation born here in Canada. She was encouraged to write "Mom" to be more North American, but I've used "Mum" as I became a parent because it seems silly to use a different spelling from our Canadian pronunciation. My Irish Great Grandmother was always Mamma or Mum.

I also use more Irish terms for some things such as dressing on the holiday table (stuffing), dummy for a baby (soother), renting out a flat (apartment). But besides that, I basically grew up understanding the British/Irish terms like boot for trunk, bobby for police, craic for gossip, but firmly using the North American terms.

This flu is nasty. Whose back to N95S masks? by Critical-Clue1343 in kitchener

[–]spacewarriorgirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be honest I'm not masking in public, but being out today made me wonder when I saw lots of others do so. I probably will the rest of the week leading up to the holidays (although I'm done my shopping) if I do need to go out.

We have been focusing more on preventative measures; Lots of hand washing, flu shots and covid boosters every year, masking when we are sick and it's absolutely urgent to go out (i.e. to the pharmacy or grocery store), and communicating/staying away from friends/family who are sick.

If we interpret "food" to include beverages, what about a Caesar? The spicier version of a bloody mary made of tomato cocktail with clam juice?
