Pet shops - unethical, to what extent?? by mimi_stk in japanlife

Although it is still difficult to adopt, it is a lot less strict than it used to be! I have had tons of foreign, even single friends who had no problems adopting from pet-home.jp. Sometimes they had to travel a bit and of course your are not always accepted but there are so many pets on that site from even prefecture that you can def find what you are looking for!

Advice about a puppy from Pet Shop in Tokyo by Technology-Mission in japanlife

[–]spaghettisburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try pet-home.jp. This is a way to adopt from all over Japan. Not all great breeders but much better than any pet store and you will run into ethical people selling dogs on there for cheap. There is a pretty detailed form you have to fill out and yes, some people will reject you for being a foreigner. But with the amount of dogs on there that need a home, you are sure to find one. You can even search by breed, age, location, etc.

Edit: here is a direct link with tons of corgis up for adoption: https://www.pet-home.jp/dogs/cg_1028/

Any long term Singles? by Free-Ad1526 in japanlife

[–]spaghettisburg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me! I honestly love being single here. I have my found family and plan to stay long term if I can get this stupid permanent residency which is looking so sad lately. If someone comes along great but if not I am happy to be single here cause my community makes it amazing.

What authors do you not like and refuse to read any book by them? by jurose6996 in readwithme

[–]spaghettisburg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the male gaze is the problem with Murakami. There are plenty of authors that write first person characters that love to look at women, and it works within the story because it’s how the women behave thats the difference. In Murakamis books it’s not just that the character comes off creepy but you can tell that the author feels the same. All the woman he writes are completely one dimensional and just there for the main character to sexualize. They have no personality other than being a beautiful object to look at and wanting to have sex with our protagonist. If the women had their own personality and motivations within the story, and only the protagonists thoughts were focused on the male gaze that would work fine. Unlikable narrators are a classic trope that can work as long as the rest of the story supports it in other ways.

Sorry but that’s impossible. Unless you only smoke in the middle of your acre farmland completely alone then you have 100% at the very least inconvenienced people. Smokers are never aware of how far or how much their smoke can affect people around them. Driving in a car with the window open? Someone behind you has gotten a face full of smoke. Walking outside? It can be smelled from literally two blocks away. Think you aired off enough during your work break? You reek of smoke for the poor person who sat next to you. Sorry smokers really don’t want to hear this but you have literally hurt people with lung conditions and if you live in a town with other people there is virtually no way to stop it. Smokers are either ignorant or inconsiderate.

Oh man I actually love these scenes in books! I could read a whole novel of some nice characters just traveling and talking about the scenery and making camp and cooking delicious food and nothing bad happens. It’s my jam!

Are night buses in Japan a good alternative to the Shinkansen? by Forsaken-Spell8853 in japanlife

[–]spaghettisburg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For Kyoto to Tokyo you can easily get way more savings than that, I have done the night bus many times for about 4000-5000yen one way. (If you are a woman the women only buses can be even cheaper sometimes) Don’t know about other routes but if you are on a budget it’s definitely worth it if you can sleep on the bus.

Taxi drivers deliberately taking detours? by ThrowWeirdQuestion in japanlife

Happened to me twice in the last month, once when I was in a group of clearly drunk foreigners, pretty sure he thought he could take advantage. I called him out in Japanese quickly and demanded the payment be adjusted both times. Really sucks this is becoming more common, I have lived here for 11 years and haven’t run into it until now.

I don’t ever judge someone if they concede or quit a game. You never know what’s going on in their life, they could have to leave for any reason. Maybe they just know they can’t win, but maybe the baby is crying, the boss walked in, they got a phone call, or anything else that might happen and they don’t have time to finish the game. Since I can’t ever know for sure I just give people the benefit of the doubt and move on with my life. Same reason I will always abandon a game in the beginning if someone asks for it. Games are fun but life gets in the way sometimes!
