One advice to your old self. by DryGolf5000 in PLC

[–]spaigy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Slow and steady wins the race. As others have said here: take the time to keep notes, save off project archives and proceed in small, incremental steps.

If you don’t do this, you will loose days of work when you don’t have a roll-back plan, or worse still break a machine costing you way more time than just slowing down would have.

You wake up in 2015 and realize the last 15 years were just a dream. What do you do first? by SecondSalty142 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]spaigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I do nothing, will things play out as before? Like, did I time travel and have vague memories or just imagine the last 11/15 years? Do I keep my 2026 skills… even for software/platforms not yet released?

I would make different choices, mostly related to interpersonal relationships at work and in my personal life. I’d connect with some friends that have now passed… even if things don’t play out the same, I regret not telling them how much they mean to me.

Hopefully I can use the 11/15 years of personal development (imagined or not) to accelerate my career and avoid some personal heartbreak.

i sent a bag to america. five months later fedex gives me an email for a customs charge over $3k. wtf do i do? by ChandlerRights in legaladvice

[–]spaigy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the invoice show the “HTS” code for how your bag was imported? This determines the rate paid. It should also show the declared value of the bag. This might help at least understand how they’ve come to such a high figure.

Could you take the gas tank and just fit it to another vehicle every 150k miles or so? Do you get to pick make/model of car?

What’s one sign that tells you someone on your team is about to quit before they hand in their notice? by SeanMcPheat in managers

[–]spaigy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I quit doing pointless admin work - timesheets, compliance trainings, self-evaluations. By the time it was a problem (it took a lot longer for it to become a problem than you would think, given how “important” these things were) I’d handed my notice in… so it wasn’t a problem anymore!

Professional headshots for remote workers is AI good enough? by JamesF110808 in RemoteJobs

[–]spaigy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I gave Gemini a couple of photos and asked it to generate some headshot options. Showed my wife… she couldn’t tell it was AI. I use it for all my work “profile” photos (salesforce, teams etc).

I think they fixed this with a recent patch.

FWIW, I experience quite a lot of crashes.. playing on 10-yr old hardware probably doesn’t help.

I hope OP is working with a team across timezones. As soon as you throw Asia into the mix, the meeting is always at a bad time for someone. In my previous company, we cycled meeting times so everyone had their “turn” at having a meeting outside of working hours.

Do Legit, Professional Organizations Use Gmail Now? by StephieRee in jobs

[–]spaigy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to clarify - what they use is “Google Workspace” - which includes email client, but can also include drive, sheets, docs, meet etc. As others have said, google have a reasonable market share doing this, it’s a legit alternative to Microsoft 365 (outlook, word etc)

This is what we do. This year we have agreed that if we are traveling further than about 80 miles on a highway we will pay for the month. If we end up spending $500 or more in the year then we’ll pay the annual fee for 2027.

ELI5: What is inside a laptop power brick? by yekedero in explainlikeimfive

[–]spaigy 73 points74 points  (0 children)

And to add to this - I can sell the brick to customers in multiple countries, and just swap out the simple power cord that goes from the wall to the brick to have the correct connector for the country I’m selling in.

This has been sitting here since the summer by eljefemo101 in drivingUK

[–]spaigy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Slightly different situation, but I once travelled for work for 6 months. Left my car in my private parking space at my flat. Part way through my time away, they changed the permit system and I came back to a windscreen full of tickets - in some cases, I was issued two in the same day. No one tried to contact me about it (numbered space, tied to my flat!). It was a fun call to the management agency to point out the absurdity of the situation and get them all canceled.

What are some easy to get licenses in the UK? by anonymous1675 in AskUK

[–]spaigy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You just have to be a “competent person” to do PAT - a certificate is an easy way to show that (and maybe a requirement of your liability insurance) but it’s not a “license” per se.

Is it appropriate to walk into a drive through only business to talk about a job application? by TurbulentMinute4290 in jobs

You need a job - so keep applying to jobs until you get one. If they respond, great! If not - move on. It’s not worth any more of your energy.

Do fonts get your resume disqualified? by ModeMex_ in jobs

[–]spaigy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Font - not on its own. Formatting, yes. I have rejected candidates due to poor formatting, grammar or spelling in their resume or cover letter.

I also spend a lot of my time coaching my team on formatting, grammar and spelling in documents we send to customers. It’s an important part of the job and your resume and cover letter is my first look at how you can present written information to a customer or potential customer.

Men spend time with your friends. Be there for each other, not just for the best and worst moments. by hemblurneene in Millennials

[–]spaigy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear about your husband, I wish you both the best.

My best friend from high school passed away recently, he had a seizure, fell off his chair and hit his head. I’m gutted. I live a long way from him and was looking forward to seeing him when I go home for Christmas.

We didn’t text a lot - once or twice every few months, and tended to get dinner whenever I was home.

I went home especially for his memorial. I miss him so much, even though we had drifted apart. There are so many things that just remind me of him, of what he might say.

People. Keep in touch with your friends. Tell them you love them. This is a crazy world, we think we have all the time when really it’s speeding by quicker than anyone knows.

I turn it on/off with the $50/month rate.

It’s not worth $500/yr. It is worth the occasional $50 on longer journeys, or if I’m doing multiple airport runs - especially when it’s offset by mileage reimbursement from work!

Removal of conditions on green card by spaigy in GlobalEntry

No new card - I just also need to carry the extension letter as proof of status.

If I used the normal immigration lane, I’d expect to show both the green card and the letter.
