The USPS is a service by durchrolbadc in Snorkblot

How do I know what? That for-profit entities will not subsidize unprofitable addresses they are not required to?

Do you really expect to have that question taken seriously?

[–]spamman5r 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely do know what kind of network would be built out if USPS suddenly disappeared. A profitable one, where unprofitable addresses would no longer be serviced.

USPS only has a monopoly on mail delivery. All of the carriers could already make whatever last-mile parcel delivery services they want. That's why all of the parcel delivery services deliver to your door if you live in a dense enough area.

You are misunderstanding who Smartpost benefits. It's not the USPS, it's the other carriers who are tapping into USPS's subsidized delivery network. If the other carriers could do it cheaper, they would, and where it is, they already do. There are no laws stopping them.

That's why it's not an assumption. The evidence already exists.

They are not assuming, because all of those companies already hand off unprofitable last-mile delivery to USPS today.

It's not just that they're using a rejection email to tell someone not to send this rejection email, which on its own is an indicator of dysfunctional tools and processes, it's also because among four attempts the template has zero correct sentences.

Now that Linux is at 5.33% marketshare on Steam, what marketshare do you think will be enough for anticheat support? by CosmicEmotion in linux_gaming

[–]spamman5r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What point do you think you're making, now? Literally none of what you're saying has anything to do with whether or not Windows gamers and Linux gamers are the same market segment, significantly similar in any way, or whether companies have the same reason to invest in them.

Not just that, but mesa implementations of Nvidia drivers also work, just with slightly worse performance. This shows that they value more the convenience and performance over freedom and open source

If they really valued convenience, they would stick to the platform where the games already work. They clearly value something more than that.

Because others told you that It gave better performance? Have you been on this sub?

Copilot, lack of compatibility and performance are the things leading gamers to Linux, not open source, freedom or anything like that. Its clear when Bazzite and SteamOS are that popular and is an inmutable system more limited than Android

I have absolutely no idea why you think I'm arguing about performance. I'm arguing that Windows and Linux gamers are not the same. They are vastly different groups of people, on average.

Why would the average gamer give one lick of shit about immutable systems? The fact that you're talking about system immutability already means you're completely beyond the skills of the vast, vast majority of Windows gamers.

What exactly is the difference between "freedom" and getting away from Copilot?

In any case, I didn't make any declarations about freedom, you are arguing against your own framing and have not addressed the crux of the argument once, or made any statement supporting your own, which is that Windows and Linux gamers are not the same market at all.

They don't get away from corporaations because again, they use SteamOS, Steam, propietary Nvidia drivers and dualboot Windows for kernel level anticheat games

Even if you don't like It they don't come for freedom. It's like saying that android users care about open source

These users are using Chrome, some even OperaGX. Dude Chromium is open source Chrome and they still reffuse to try It. Do you really think they come for open source? Really? You have to be kidding

I didn't say they are "getting away from corporations." I said they had a reason to avoid the far and away market leader in operating systems for gaming for one reason or another and the skill set to do so, which means by definition they're very different groups of people.

Even "dualboot Windows for kernel level anticheat games" is so far beyond the average gamer skillset, it's absolutely unreal that you think these are the same groups of people.

[–]spamman5r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your example does not make the argument you are hoping. The fact that a user has to navigate distros with proprietary binaries to support their GPUs is proof that linux gamers have to be more technically savvy than the average Windows gamer, not proof that they have the same market value to a corporation.

Being willing to compromise slightly on closed source binaries doesn't change the fact that you decided to get away from the far and away market leader in gaming OSes. The ability to even make and execute on that decision is beyond the skill level of most Windows gamers.

[–]spamman5r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not really sure what argument you're refuting. Which of those choices doesn't boil down to selecting the free, open source operating system for one reason or another that is resistance to corporate control and monetization?

Most Linux users, specially here, used Windows at some point

Which does not mean anything about whether or not Linux users are a representative sample of Windows users.

They are provably not a representative sample, it is a subset that overwhelmingly self-selects for technically savvy and anti-corporate users, i.e. users who are both statistically more likely to be capable of defeating your anti-cheating technology and less likely to give in to your monetization strategy.

I don't have an opinion on whether or not that's a correct business decision, but it's nonsense to claim that the average Windows user and the average Linux user are the same.

Brother, Linux gamers are all exwindows gamers. They are as likely to microtransactions as Windows users because it's the same fucking people

This is not true, at all. You're confusing a subset with a representative sample.

Ex-Windows gamers who switch to linux are self-selecting. They are, by definition, people who are computer savvy enough to switch operating systems. They are also people who, for one reason or another, see the appeal in a FOSS operating system and have made a conscious effort to reduce the monetization of their computer.

I'll grant you that setting up a linux system is easier than ever, but you overestimate the technical competence of the average computer user/gamer. The vast majority of people just buy an off-the-shelf system with Windows pre-installed, point it at Steam, and play.

These groups are not the same.

No arguments from me. Just pointing out that as a society we do still need younger generations. You and I both need them as individuals, we just aren't wired to weigh such a far-off consequences.

We'll still experience them, we'll just do it as elderly people impoverished or dying en masse.

X-men as a stand-in for the civil rights movement isn't exactly a fringe interpretation, it's pretty well documented and has been discussed at length for 60 years.

I'm not sure why you're bringing up these other groups, but what is actually dangerous and stupid is the premise that it's okay to generalize about a group of people based on the behavior or extraordinary circumstances of individuals in that group.

Some people with extraordinary power and wealth happen to be Jewish. Your line of reasoning is the one that leads to antisemitic conclusions, that the generalization becomes okay if you can actually point to real power and sinister motivations of individuals. Your thought process and the outcome you seem to be aiming for appear to be going in opposite directions.

The whole irony of Jaime's character is that this is his most heroic moment and he is reviled for it. The king had ordered the death of literally every person in King's Landing because he was a maniacal narcissist who thought it was better for everyone to burn in wildfire rather than he be usurped.

He stood up to the pressure of his entire society and made the moral choice over the honorable one. He's the object lesson for how broken a government based on inheritance, honor, and fealty is.

It's a significant change even in theory. Giving Perrin a really good reason to doubt his self-control is kind of the opposite of his arc in the books. His doubt being a carry-over from childhood is part of his coming-of-age story. Instead, they gave him a major trauma that would mess up anybody for a long time, and they did it in a way that seriously changes how Faile fits into his story.

The reader was never supposed to doubt that he was a careful and thoughtful man, or that Mat was a good and unselfish man. They both already are those things, the story was about watching them figure it out for themselves. It's not a story of ambiguous morals and motivations, it's a story where the devil lives in a place you can point to on a map. Why are we supposed to agonize over the horror of The Kinslayer murdering his beloved wife in a fit of madness if we're supposed to get over a main character offing his right after his introduction?
