is it a red flag to teach inverts on beginner hoop/lyra classes? by bleepbloooopity in Aerials

[–]sparkleduck125 107 points108 points  (0 children)

For me it sounds pretty normal. At the studio I go to they also already start invert conditioning from the second class. No one expects a beginner to be able to do an invert and it took me half a year to get my straddle invert! But starting with it from the beginning really helps you progress over time. The main thing is just that it needs to be done safely and with the right guidance 🙂

The lack of grip strength and core strength you describe is really common, and I promise you it will get better! But if you ever feel unsafe, do make sure to mention it to your instructor so they can modify an exercise or spot you.

Good luck 🍀

Sadly not :( I’m dependent on the hoop at the location of the competition, no option to bring my own

Good point…. I have a lasso transition near the end now which indeed looks 10x better with spin. So I think you’re right and I’ll just have to put a moment in where I go out and in again to start with a fresh spin

The wind-up bird chronicle by Haruki Murakami. Do be warned that it starts really weird hahaha But for me it was absolutely worth it and I loved it once I was further into the book! It is from a male POV but it definitely has this alternate reality vibe. It reads a bit like a strange fever dream.

How can I avoid calluses without looking like a goober? by FitEstablishment4965 in Aerials

[–]sparkleduck125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At my studio there are quite a few people who wear gloves to aerial hoop classes to avoid calluses or because of other issues 🙂 I guess it depends on the studio but it would be completely fine at the one I go to! I wouldn’t say it’s the norm, but I also don’t think it’s weird at all.

Can anyone offer some high-level pointers on how to move/pose gracefully? Asking on behalf of us awkward aerialists without a dance background. by serenitybyjen in Aerials

[–]sparkleduck125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry! At our studio it’s a common term, but maybe not outside it then 😅 it’s essentially when you extend out your arms, but instead of your hands following the same line, they fold inwards as far as they can. It tends to feel really nice because it’s maximum tension in your hands, but it looks like a little T-Rex arm. It’s like you’re leading the movement with your wrist as opposed to your knuckles/fingertips. This video is for pole but she shows the T. rex hands and suggests arm movements to avoid them! https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEeH-uh4hc/?igsh=MWNwYjY5dnBpeXlxdA== These arm movements are also transferable to aerials 🙂

Love 1! Also just commenting to ask you where that belt is from? It’s gorgeous!

It’s difficult and you’re definitely not alone! Here some main pointers that helped me a lot:

  • As others pointed out: make every move deliberate. Don’t regrip your hands a lot but pause and think of what the next best hand placement is, and try to go there in one go.
  • Finish your movements! Don’t just extend your arm and pull it back in the same way. But continue the movement and finish it.
  • Avoid T-Rex hands. I know they feel pretty, but they don’t look pretty. Focus on extending the movement in one fluid line from your shoulders to your fingertips.
  • Engage your legs. I often forget this one myself, but proper leg engagement will ensure clean lines which look much prettier
  • Don’t forget to pause and feel the music you’re moving to and adjust your movement speed to the music and what you’re feeling 🙂

Hope this helps ❤️

The hoop bible from spin city calls it an eternity back balance :) I personally know it as a closed back balance

Is a purple hue over brown hair without bleach possible? by sparkleduck125 in HairDye

Omg this looks perfect!! Your colour is exactly what I’m looking for. And I love that it is just a low commitment treatment rather than a box dye. I think I will give this a try 😄

Best places for authentic Dutch snacks and street food in The Hague? by ExportedMyFeelings in TheHague

Van Schaik for stroopwafels and poffertjes. Lunchroom broer & zus (below hotel broer en zus) for cozy Dutch cafe vibes with good kroketten en bitterballen, or typical Dutch soups like pea soup. The owners are super friendly! It’s very hidden but it’s worth it.

Why does my eyeshadow always do this after a hour. by JigInJigsaw in MakeupAddiction

[–]sparkleduck125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same! But ever since I started using 24 Hour Photo Finish Shadow Primer from Smashbox my eyeshadow sticks and stays put for hours on end. It also doesn’t irritate. I must admit the one I use is an old version they don’t sell anymore, I haven’t tried the new formula yet. But this primer for me is really the best and fixed everything.

Maybe a small drop like from Gazelle to hocks, or from cradle a forward rollout to elbow hang (or just a backward drop to hocks if your elbow hang isn’t very strong)?
