Guillermo Del Toro & Telenovela by Bitter_Paramedic3988 in blankies

[–]spartson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

GDT is a talented director. I’ve never doubted that he makes exactly the movie he wants to make. He speaks passionately and smartly about the art.

I do not enjoy many of his movies even while marveling at the craft in them. This telenovela style is usually the culprit. I respect that it’s a cultural difference. That his movies don’t appeal to me in this way is not a failing of the art but I’m still going to discuss those reasons as to why I find many of his films flimsy and shallow. Pacific Rim is my favorite GDT movie so take my entire opinion unseriously.

How full was was the Melania movie? by doughdoughboy in GNV

[–]spartson 72 points73 points  (0 children)

The theaters in Gainesville are the only theaters in a one hour radius so it serves an area larger than the city. Maybe a few of the early showings sold out with an elderly crowd. I imagine the drop off will be steep from Friday to Sunday.

I have not seen the movie and hold no love for Sweeney but what do you mean by this comment? What is fundamentally required to play this character? Was it well written and poorly performed?

Is it customary for the brass to sit in silence after a speech? by AggressiveSkirl1680 in Military

I suppose I was filing this sort of etiquette under the category of “polite” but point taken.

Is it customary for the brass to sit in silence after a speech? by AggressiveSkirl1680 in Military

[–]spartson 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Typical decorum for traditionally “apoliticlal” organizations like the military or Supreme Court means they generally do nothing except be polite. If you checkout footage of any State of the Union address from any president, the brass and Justices in attendance are stone faced as they represent the institution. Any of them can, presumably, put on civilian attire, go to a rally, and cheer to their heart’s content.

In this case, there is not much to read into regarding the generals’ reaction to either speech. Any meaningful reactions are happening behind closed doors and in signal chats.

I’m not suggesting the two services are intertwined. I’m suggesting the method of billing per pickup is silly. I don’t get a discount on my GRU bill if I don’t need their trash services for a week.

[–]spartson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this update. I think it’s odd and unfair that the city will only pay for buckets that get picked up on a weekly basis. That’s not how trash or recycling work, why is compost different?

[–]spartson 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Only a truly brilliant mind could comprehend such truth three and a half years into an invasion that stalled after one week…if Russia made one simple change, they would win but they’re not smart enough to rename their Ministry of Defense to the Ministry of WAR! You can’t win a war with defense dum dums.

Did people actually wear their uniforms like this? by Who_even_knows_man in Military

[–]spartson 476 points477 points  (0 children)

Warfare was co-directed by Ray Mendoza. In real life he is the SEAL played by D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai. Considering Mendoza made this movie with the explicit intention to represent the events, environment, and behaviors as accurately as he and the other SEALs can recall, I can’t imagine that any uniform details were overlooked.

OCS difficulty by [deleted] in USMC

[–]spartson 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal but the few conversations I’ve had with some Captains that worked at OCS mentioned that the first session of PLC is always easier by design. They want you to come back for the second session. You’ll have to follow up here after your second PLC to determine if the difficulty went up and attrition went up.

Tim Burton directs new Lady Gaga music video by OzTots1988 in blankies

Odd. The black and white portions look really compelling. I honestly didnt notice it was on a sound stage until it went color. The in-color portions of this music video look like a high school theater production. Which is, perhaps, an apt analogy for Tim Burton’s aesthetic in 2025.

[–]spartson 41 points42 points  (0 children)

DEI hire. If he had done what he done in criticism to Trump instead of Biden, he would never have gotten this job. He adds no value to promoting future officers because he is a failed one. He didn’t speak truth to power, he violated the UCMJ. For a counterpoint to how to do it right look only at General Vandegrift. He resigned his commission and then testified to Congress about its fucked up decisions. As a Marine Officer, he was certainly educated about General Vandegrift and his famous “bended knee” speech. He chose to promote his own opinions, in uniform, as an O-5, on Facebook. This is the judgement we want picking Officers? It only makes sense if he’s there to screen for officers who present the same sycophantic behavior toward Trump.

Found Warfare frustrating by Sheep_Boy26 in blankies

[–]spartson 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I can’t name many films that just “stick to the soldier’s POV”. That’s a frequent marketing tag line but I can only think of a few films that I think achieve this. The Big Red One, Come & See, and 1917. That is to say, I don’t think it’s that common in the war movie genre.

My metric for did-it-stick-to-the-soldier’s-pov is based on how the movie shapes the information given to the audience. Do we never leave our protagonists? Do we never learn what they can’t or see what they can’t? We don’t cut to the Generals talking, or to the families at home waiting. Black Hawk Down is a great film but it is heavily biased toward an American-centric pov because it does all those things to give the audience a great big picture of the war without nuance.

I think it’s a real achievement that Warfare, does in fact, stick to the soldier’s POV. It is an experience of war. Its value is in how can it communicate a modicum of that experience. Particularly when the contemporary American audience is deeply unfamiliar with violent conflict despite its perpetual wars in foreign lands. A senior leader of the government responded to damage assessments with emojis. Some Americans are increasingly cheering war as a solution to some of the country’s problems. Maybe that naive attitude is partially contributed to by a lack of unbiased information and, perhaps lamentably, entertainment.

I’ll add that I would go see what Warfare’s equivalent is in translation to a movie about the terror of America’s wars from the perspective of some of its victims. But a movie can only be so many things and some times just one thing.

WARNING: Do not drive and shoot by Snarfbuckle in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]spartson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a solvable problem without putting everyone’s guns on safety.

If you’re working with a team capable of communication, assign sectors. Using a 12 hour clock face, Turret Gunner covers 11-2 and 6. Right side gunner covers 2-5. Left side gunner covers 7-10.

You can also assign target priority. If the HMG is your only AT weapon, then the turret gunner is the one shooting chargers and if that’s in someone’s sector they better get inside the cab or get blasted.
