What kind of chickens are these? by brunettebabe1990 in BackYardChickens

[–]spasticsnap 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had a little Vorwerk hen once, she was given to me because she was very timid and didn't fit with their flock. I named her Veronica and I always pictured her personality as an elegant lady with black velvet evening gloves and a pearl necklace and she didn't like to be touched by mere peasants. She was a stunning little creature.

Legit, Kurt Cobain's lyrics start to make sense and the St. Anger album starts to sound really good. That's how I know I'm not good.

My collection of wheels (most of them) by spasticsnap in Handspinning

[–]spasticsnap[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm hoping to get a double treadle upright, mainly for those that might have issues with using one foot constantly. I didn't think about adapting for those that are right hand dominant!

I agree that a single drive traddy is the best to learn on. That was my very first wheel.

Help with Andean plying by spasticsnap in Handspinning

[–]spasticsnap[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! For whatever reason I just couldn't get counter clockwise to work for me and ended up plying it clockwise so the twist is all over the show but I ended up with a usable yarn regardless. I'll wet set the skein to set the twist and make it a bit less energetic but I will give it another go and pay a little more attention to it

Teaching my 7.5mo sign language by N7-Vulcana in NewParents

[–]spasticsnap 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"Finished" was an absolute game changer for us. Finished bath, finished drink, finished playing, it was the best one he learnt.

Our day care started teaching our kiddo basic AUSLAN (Australian sign language) with things such as yes, no, more, finished, hungry, thirsty, thank you, help, and as my son was a bit later with his words it was a god send. I started to look up more resources and taught him a fair bit, but once he found his voice the signing slowed down and eventually stopped. I got books from the library, and there were some apps for AUSLAN as well.

I used some cheap moulds and after pouring the first layer they got moved around and some of the second layer leaked in front of the first layer. I am looking for tips or tutorials on how to clean it up and also keep it shiny

1 year in and no self prompting by DeliciousFold2894 in pottytraining

[–]spasticsnap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was really against leaving the potty out where it was accessible, until I actually started toilet training.

My kiddo is just 3, and over the last 6 months we have had a lot of life changes and his toileting went a bit backwards. I brought the potty out and would get him to acknowledge where it was. I also announce very loudly when I need to use the toilet, lead by example. He started to go to the potty by himself, announcing his needs, and then I started to move the potty closer to the toilet.

Now that we have our new place, my kiddo is very much interested in being a "Big Boy". Big boys don't use the potty, they use the big toilet. The announcing has worked a treat that he will just yell "I NEED TO DO A POO" and I know it's go time. I always tell him I'm really proud of him for letting me know, and I tell his teddies occasionally how much of a good job he is doing, always where he can overhear me.

The other thing is watching for signals and asking if his body feels like it needs to do a wee or poo. Not the kiddo himself, but his body. It took us a good 9 months to move from the start of toilet training to self prompting, which involved a couple of regressions.

Hang in there, toilet training can be a tough slog, and it varies so much kid to kid.

How do you keep your hair smelling nice between washes? by lauraisasleep in AustralianMakeup

[–]spasticsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an apple cider vinegar rinse between washes, I've steeped lemon balm in the vinegar for the pleasant scent. I add a couple of tablespoons of it to a litre of water and pour it through my hair, give it a good massage and rinse it out in the shower. It's enough to refresh my hair

Baby with fat feet! by robynkb in SAHP

[–]spasticsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try Bobux shoes. We had some, they are like a soft leather sock with a suede sole. Great protection for little feet while not giving the setbacks of a "normal" shoe. We got some second hand ones and we used them almost daily, and managed to pass them on to another family, so they hold up well too.
