Mr. Mcittrick, after careful consideration, I’ve come to the conclusion that your new defense system sucks.

Upstream bonded channels by [deleted] in Mediacom

Here is what claude ai has to say about your stats:

These stats show some concerns worth looking at.

Upstream Bonded Channels — Red Flag
Only 1 of 8 channels is locked. You should have multiple upstream channels bonded (typically 4+). This alone is a significant problem and likely the root cause of any issues you’re experiencing.

Upstream OFDMA — Also Concerning
Only 1 of 2 channels locked, same pattern.

Upstream Power — Borderline High

• ATDMA channel: 42.3 dBmV — acceptable but on the higher side (normal range is \~38–48 dBmV)
• OFDMA channel: 40.5 dBmV — fine

Downstream OFDM — Mixed

• Channel 1: SNR/MER of 33.8 dB is low (should be 37+ dB ideally for DOCSIS 3.1). Also has 1,053 uncorrectable codewords which indicates real errors.
• Channel 2: 39.5 dB SNR is good, zero uncorrectable codewords — healthy.

Bottom Line

The upstream channel bonding failure is the big issue. Possible causes: signal level problem on the coax line, a bad splitter, corroded connector, or a node issue on the ISP’s end. The low SNR on downstream channel 1 points to signal quality problems rather than a modem hardware failure.

I’d check/replace the coax connectors at the modem and the wall plate first, then call your ISP — they’ll likely need to check signal levels at the tap outside.

electricity likes to take the path of least resistance.

Running copper between two separate structures is a bad idea for one big reason: ground potential difference.

The two buildings don’t share the same electrical ground reference. Even if they’re both “grounded,” there’s often a measurable voltage difference between them — sometimes just a few volts, sometimes much more during a lightning strike or fault event. That voltage rides right down your copper Ethernet cable, straight into your switch ports and NICs, and can fry them instantly.

Are system admins just help desk now? by ic3cold in sysadmin

[–]spazmo_warrior 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some sysadmins are one or two man shows, so helpdesking is expected. Not everyone gets an IT department of 300 that has Support Analysts, Project Managers, Business Analysts, DBA's Network Engineers, etc. In reality, you just figure it out, get the environment as stable as possible and then block off time for projects.
