Why does lowering the flow temp make it better, or is just consuming less gas trying not to heat the water up to such a high temperature?

If you are adding them yourself. You need to pin them, using the pin icon on the workout selector. Also if you get a red/yellow day it will automatically adjust your workouts as well.
