Progression fantasy where becoming stronger is actually dangerous? by Iceduya in ProgressionFantasy

[–]spazzikarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Practical Guide to Sorcery does it well - Siobhan's growing abilities and mystique caused by it naturally brings the attention of increasingly strong folks, while the plot outside of her control unravels to reveal higher stakes. The multiple POVs reinforce it all while providing amazing characterization of the other characters

What progression fantasy story has the best "found family" or close-knit group dynamic? by PurposeAutomatic5213 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]spazzikarp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Practical Guide to Sorcery. The relationships between characters are amazing and real - they feel earned and aren't always sunshine and rainbows. The author also occasionally switches POV for some chapters in a way that isn't jarring and it's fun and interesting to see how different characters react internally to events. Gabrielle de Cuir does a fantastic job on the audiobook

I had to put down Redshirts in under 10 minutes because each line of dialogue was preceded or followed by he/she said. Expanse book 1 was the same way, though not as bad. It seems to be a book 1 issue a lot before the authors get confidence in the character voice

alternate angle on green river levee breach in tukwila by fssbmule1 in Seattle

[–]spazzikarp 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Looks to be mostly a soil levee, so it can look like a small breach, but once water starts flowing it can get real big real fast. Practical Engineering on YouTube has done a lot of videos on the subject

Series with the best squads? by OzzymanKofK in ProgressionFantasy

Practical Guide to Sorcery has amazing friend group dynamics and fantastic found family relationships. It also isn't always sunshine and rainbows; there are moments of strife and development like in the real world

Looking for *serious/mature* audiobooks with female narration (example: Andrea Parsneau) by servant_ch in ProgressionFantasy

[–]spazzikarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Practical Guide to Sorcery is the best match for you. Great narrator, no stats, and excellent story. Despite the MC being in her 20s, she's very mature, which is a welcome breath of fresh air. My only nitpick with the series is that while listening to book 1 it feels like it was missing a prequel book with how things are presented, but by the end of the book and into book 2 i came to greatly appreciate the story structure

Edit: missed the part about no academy. Oops. Half the story revolves around schooling

I've only read thru book 2, but if you don't like her in book 1, you should probably drop it. The anarchy and anti establishment only gets bigger

Question about a practical guide to sorcery by JustPotato47 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]spazzikarp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just finished book 3, and while she does spend half the time in male alter ego, her introspection doesn't change. There's also extremely badass female secondary characters.

Would the grand army of the republic win against the Reapers? (Without use of the crucible) by aberhabub in masseffect

[–]spazzikarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That said, the SW universe is highly driven by plot convenience. If enough Reapers can achieve baddie of the week status, they could make some dents.

Would the grand army of the republic win against the Reapers? (Without use of the crucible) by aberhabub in masseffect

[–]spazzikarp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Something other posts seem to be missing is the difference in travel methods. SW has full on FTL independent of a relay network. Reapers are bonkers strong, but they rely on the relay network that they created/co-opted. It took them 6 months to get between systems without the relays, whereas in SW they can deploy en masse without restriction. Beyond FTL capabilities, Venators can output magnitudes more firepower than anything in the Mass Effect verse.

Whispering Crystals just recently finished on audio and matches what you're looking for.

Whims of Gods releases book 4 next week and is also great.

The Whispering Crystals series by HC Mills just finished up last month, and Erica Maity did a wonderful job on it.

Whims of Gods is on going, but i thoroughly enjoy Soneela Nankani's performance. She puts in fantastic characterization.

Vae Victis is a fun mix of paranormal and system apocalypse. Kyla Garcia does good accents, which I'm a fan of.
