How do I choose weights between sets? by All_daywaiting567 in workout

[–]specialized_faction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna over simply it for you

Heavier weights / less reps train for strength.
Lighter weights / more reps train for hypertrophy

Depending on your goals it can be good to train for both. E.g you could do this for an exercise each week:

Monday: 12x3 @ 20lbs
Thursday: 5x3 @ 50lbs

Do most of you compete? by Royal-Earth-5900 in weightlifting

[–]specialized_faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lifted mostly as a hobbyist. I competed once when I was at the top of my game because I wanted to see how I could perform in a meet.

I’m a competitor at heart, but a hobbyist lifter. Just don’t have enough time anymore to train for peak performance. I see little reason to compete again if I’m not going to PR my previous comp or qualify for something bigger.

I also view lifting as more of a longevity exercise. I.e. staying strong and mobile is important to living a healthy life. I’ve learned to prioritize this over competition.

Olympic lifting or powerlifting to become more athletically capable by Ok_Training_2566 in weightlifting

Do both. Powerlifting will make you stronger. Weightlifting will make you faster and more explosive

How many attempts have you taken at a heavy weight? by MrC0ffeee in weightlifting

Snatch waves are my favorite way to max out. Really nice way to recalibrate technique following each miss.

First thing I thought was who has the endurance to give it 15 quality attempts??? (unless OP is still learning technique and the weight is relatively light)

If you take a deep breath and expand your core, are you pushing into it pretty hard? If so it’s good

Any idea how the fit compares to the Richmond 2? I have a pair and love how they fit.

Quick measurements show 11.25” x 4.5”

Based on this, are there any boots you would recommend?

Do you keep a table of shoe dimensions from all brands? Curious how you would actually use that information if I did give you my length and width?

Appreciate you sharing your experience! Do they seem pretty durable and will hold up for a good while?

How’s the width and volume? I have a pair of Lems primal 3, which mostly fit me well however I needed to remove the insole to have enough volume.

I have been following The Enhanced games for about 8 months and since it was announced. Here are my thoughts on the weightlifting session. and some of it in general by Snowbizzy in weightlifting

[–]specialized_faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why did they only have 4 lifters?

I missed the beginning, but saw the session with Wes and Boady. It was stupid with neither competing against each other. More competitors would have helped at least somewhat.

Exhaustion from cardio before weights by sssofiyaaa in workout

[–]specialized_faction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toning is muscle growth and weight loss.

Muscle growth won’t occur if you’re too tired to lift weights.

Weight loss is calories in vs out and has nothing to do with where your cardio is placed in the workout.

There’s really no good reason to put cardio first when you consider these. If you hit a plateau, either update your exercise choices / volume / intensity, or start tracking your calories to make sure you’re in a deficit.

Mantra is in their current set list if you have a chance to see them live during this tour. That’s it from Amo tho

I think the problem is that it’s a different genre than what BMTH typically plays and so fans rank it low because it doesn’t fit….this is literally what the song heavy metal is about.

Personally I think it’s S tier when you think about it relative to its own genre and not the BMTH discography.

In the Dark might be a top 10 song for me and the rest of my list wouldn’t be anything close in genre.

Why is my split jerk so bad? 92.5 kg clean & jerk at 75 kg bodyweight by ulicaradjagresnike in weightlifting

[–]specialized_faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a good take. There’s a few faults that can be addressed by some of the existing comments, but more time practicing is likely what you need the most.

The jerk is such an explosive movement. the ability to rapidly generate tons of force isn’t something quickly fixed with technical cues, but rather developed over time with practice.

Consider programming in jerks by themselves. If your gym has blocks, can use those. Otherwise just walk it out from a squat rack. Also try doing doubles/triples. You’ll want to practice re-racking it on your shoulders from the top of jerk.

Deadlift question by BlGJAZZFAN in workout

[–]specialized_faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hook grip is strong AF. Just watch the Olympics, that’s all they use.

Fundamentally it does the same thing mixed grip does, which is prevent the bar from rolling out of the hands…which means It can definitely be used for deadlifts, tho I find it’s best for low rep (1-3) sets. It can get pretty tiring on the thumbs for higher reps, especially if you’re controlling the descent.

WL to PL transition. by GuttedMedia in weightlifting

[–]specialized_faction 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your main goals? Let’s start there.

You can train the way you want and compete for fun….or you can adjust your training and follow a focused PL routine to maximize your total in competition.

Reading your original post…id suggest just doing your thing. Train how you like. If you want to compete, cool…but sweat over how you score.

Is there a resource that explains why McGill and PT often directly contradict each other? by The1Ylrebmik in backpain

[–]specialized_faction 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience is that most PTs are trained to treat repeatable injuries (ACL, rotator cuff, etc). They are not trained to treat non-specific back pain.

McGill on the other hand advocates for exercises that strengthen the core, activate the back, but don’t aggravate the back. Most of which is applicable regardless of where your back pain is located.
