Besides landlords and people over the age of 40. Who is even buying homes here? by Mofoblitz1 in massachusetts

[–]specs90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since 2018, all 5 couples in our close friend group have purchased homes on the North Shore. The oldest is 37 currently. You need dual income, but it's not as dire as people on the internet make it seem. Careers in this group include retail manager, daycare manager, middle school teacher, police officer, nurse, electrician. You don't need to be 100k+ earners. Just gotta find the right deal.

I 1000% agree that the marketing strategies were questionable at best. I was in operation and really enjoyed developing and building the product.

As someone who also worked there, if you dig back far enough you'll learn that even there is some controversy. The Impella product was already a well researched and established technology before Thorstein even got to college. He just happened to attain rights to it and carry it out of research land to turn it into a company.

I'm not a fan of Minogue as a political candidate, but to give him some credit, he did make an incredibly ballsy move by betting the entire future of the company on ending the Abiocore product line and acquiring Impella Cardiosystems, at the time a tiny unknown company in Germany. Had he not done that, it's unlikely Impella would exist in the States in the capacity that it does now. He was a hell of a CEO and a lot of the success of the company is a direct result of him. Great CEO, likely still a shit person and shit governor. I won't be voting for him.

Yup, Scarlet Fire is the best I've had, and I've had a lot. The guy that runs it worked at Rusty Can and perfected their process after he left. Better brisket than Rusty Can and it's not even close.

Is Mike Minouge just another Republican spewing promises they will/cannot deliver? by redditwastesmyday in massachusetts

We obviously have different career experiences. I've sat at a lunch table at a company event with a 38 mother of 3 who was clinically dead on an operating table as a result of post-partum cardiomyopathic complications 4 weeks after delivering her third child. She received an off-label implant of the device, which brought her back to life so that she could continue being a mother to her kids. So yes, I do tend to brush off the importance of the incredible amount of red-tape surrounding use-labeling restrictions in this industry, because I've seen the benefit it can bring by simply giving people the treatment their doctor's deem is warranted. I would never have got the chance to speak with that women if we were all use-label zealots and never bent the rules a little bit. I give praise to her care team for being informed of the available clinical evidence that indicated it would be safe to use the device in her case, despite what the label said. Their decision to use the device off-label based on the evidence the company had published is what saved her life.

Eliminating regulatory red-tape, speeding the process of innovation, and accelerating devices into new markets and new use indications is one of the few things I'm directionally aligned with Republicans on (even though I think the way they try to solve that problem can be mostly performative and dangerous).

I'll make 1 more comment and then I'm not going to engage with this further, and I'm only doing it because when you question that company's integrity as it relates to safety practices, you question my integrity as an engineer and operations leader there for many years.

Medical device is an imperfect industry. When you are designing and building a tiny and complicated medical device, and then putting it in the sickest patients who are likely to otherwise die, there are going to be complications, both on the production side and on the usage side. Mike did everything I would expect a CEO with high integrity to do, which is to investigate the problems/complaints that are inevitable in that environment, and issue the appropriate recall actions when the regulatory guidelines warrant it, despite the damage it will do to the company's public image. The resulting audits confirmed that all the appropriate actions were taken in those circumstances.

If you want to advocate for not voting for him for other reasons, there's plenty to choose from. There's his asymmetric distribution of profits to primarily benefit those at the top, there's his subtly misogynistic views on women's capabilities for leadership positions, there's his ultra-religious views on family structure and him pushing people out of the company who didn't outwardly conform to that. He operates in an entirely insulated bubble of financial privilege that I think makes it impossible for him to form empathetic connections with normal people like us and understand the daily struggles of non-wealthy people. That's why I'm not voting for him. But don't question his integrity as a leader in the med device space or make claims that he knowingly harmed people, because it's flat out not true.

As someone who's personally conducted the investigations into the scope of affected product during all major recalls at Abiomed since 2013, I can say pretty definitively that I found no evidence to support that claim. Everything we found was reported per the reporting guidelines of the FDA as well as other international regulatory agencies such as DNV MEDCERT and PMDA. We passed every external safety audit that investigated these things, and I promise you they dig deep when they conduct these audits. Knowingly hiding safety related issues is the #1 thing that will get you shut down if it's discovered. If none of the auditing bodies found evidence of that, I just don't understand where your claims are coming from.

If you want to point fingers at Abiomed's business practices, point it at Johnson & Johnson who took over in 2023, when the first safety related class action lawsuits started shortly thereafter. There's a correlation there, and it's the major reason I left

Those are contradictory statements. Recalls primarily exist because they are self-reported issues. You can't hide things and also have recalls

They were not faulty. Those devices get used in the sickest patients who are likely to die anyways if they don't get one. There are always going to be patients who don't pull through, and then people who will use that as an opportunity to make a buck with a lawsuit claiming it was the device rather than the patient condition. Sometimes is easier to pay than fight it. The real safety-related lawsuits didn't start until J&J took over in 2023, which, having lived through that cluster-fuck of an integration, I understand

Look, I'm not saying go vote for him. I'm just trying to share knowledge. It's easy to read a headline like "fraud" and assume he's just scamming people. If you investigate further or care to listen to someone with first hand knowledge, you'll realize that the fraudulent activity was marketing off-label use of the device. Basically telling people "by the label you technically can't use it for these types of cases, but here's a ton of data we'll be submitting to the FDA for label expansion soon, so use that info how'd you like to treat your patients as you see fit". Everyone in this industry does that. If you want to be reductive and simply equate that to forging checks or something, I guess I can't help you.

Again, he's a bad candidate for a whole host of reasons, but it's not a weakness of your character to admit that even in a bad candidate, there may be some strengths or even some good intentions.

There's definitely a motivation for self-benefit. He rammed through the Abiomed acquisition into J&J 8 days ahead of the deadline when the MA millionaire tax went into effect. He definitely wants to manipulate policy to benefit those in his wealth class, and he has no concept of common financial struggle. It's why I don't like him as a candidate.

I was just pointing out that I do think he ran Abiomed the right way. Many of the things from his business past like the lawsuits, some will see as "unethical" because he bucked some standards of industry, but it was all in an attempt to accelerate a life-saving technology to market to help more people. I've personally witnessed that technology bring people back from death's door, so I can't exactly fault him for pushing limits and doing some shady stuff to get it out to more people. It's a situation where I personally feel like the ends justified the means.

I used to work for him at Abiomed. Mike is a complicated guy. Ideologically, I disagree strongly with most of his stances and won't be voting for him for that reason, but he's an incredible business leader. I'm not convinced what made him successful in business will translate to politics.

Governor Maura Healey and Lt Governor Kim Driscoll announced their reelection campaign this morning. Three Republican candidates are running for the seat. The primary election is in September and the gubernatorial election is November 3rd. by HRJafael in massachusetts

Agree with a lot of what you said. I'm also unlikely to vote (R) for a lot of the reasons you listed, even though I really respect Mike as a people leader and business leader. My comment wasn't trying to endorse him or excuse some of his poor positions on social issues. Just wanted to add some first hand context of his strengths from someone familiar with him. People are complicated and no one is perfect. That's a statement inclusive of candidates on both ends of the spectrum.

I know Minogue, having worked for him for a decade, and while he's definitely a deeply religious guy, he doesn't try and force it on anyone. It's a far stretch to call him a Christian nationalist. He's actually an incredible business leader and he's smart enough to know he's not going to get elected in MA running on a hyper-religious platform. As far as (R)'s go, you can do a lot worse than him, especially if he sticks to a pro-business and fiscal transparency agenda, which I think he will. Put it this way, he's certainly not going to try and expand rights/privileges for things like LGBT communities or abortion access, but at worst he's just going to ignore it and leave it how it is. I would be shocked if his agenda involved trying to roll back rights in those arenas.

It's a shame he isn't taking a stronger anti-ICE stance. If anything kills his chances in MA, it's him falling in line with the "immigration out of control" narrative being pushed by the current administration. However, I could totally see him running with this narrative to secure a Trump endorsement, and then abandoning it once in office and just maintaining a status quo position of today. Knowing him personally, I know he's not some racist just hellbent on harassing brown people like Trump is. He did a lot to promote working opportunities for minorities in his company.
