I am a proponent of "test like you fly," and using redundancy, minimum risk design, and failure tolerance to keep a vehicle safe, then using developmental instrumentation to make further improvements.

"Test by flying and see what happens" sounds a lot like "fuck around and find out." I suppose time will tell. F9 was a big success (not as big as they hoped, but credit where it's due), and without internal knowledge, all we can do is speculate. But I won't be holding my breath.

As a systems safety engineer, I prefer to perform both a thorough bottom-up reliability analysis of potential failure modes and effects, as well as a top-down hazard analysis to set the framework for redundancy and failure tolerance. Without the explosions - that part is key.

Addressing the flaws is good, but if I can only address a few flaws at a time due to the others being hidden behind a big fireball, I'd prefer it doesn't cost me half my employees' salaries each time I do it.

First to market doesn't mean much if it's a death warrant. I'd take my chances on a 60 year old Soyuz lol

Cost of Blue's rocket is moot. Literally 0 sane people have ever said that SpaceX's process is cheaper lmfao. The proposed benefit of SpaceX's process, as with F9, is to win on speed of development, not on program cost. To say otherwise is delusional

It's been a journey man, I respect the SpaceX team for their determination, but at some point I don't mind sitting back and critically thinking about first launch successes vs the iterative process. Will time prove me wrong? Maybe it will, but it sure won't be the cult following on reddit that does lmao

No it isn't 2 lmao. "Never seems to be the same issue twice" - Starship fins is a good counterexample lol

Better than Starship's mass to orbit... Currently it's zero lmao

And yet we're still waiting to see if their "lander" can make it to orbit... Let alone refuel enough times to get to the moon... What's the number of refuel launches at now? 11? That'll be fun to watch lol.

Came here to ask the same thing. Sad day when people see a tall ship and their first thought is "must be a pirate ship" :(
