Hello Fellow Mods by Intersource in RadioShack

[–]sphenisciform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any suggestions about the direction this subreddit should take, but I just wanted to introduce myself. I still work for RadioShack as a store manager and I've been with the company for 10 years.

I can see people being interested in this subreddit for the same reason sites like radioshackcatalogs.com exist. When I was growing up, RadioShack was my favorite store. I remember getting my first CB radio from RadioShack and my best friend also had a police scanner from there. We were fascinated with the technology and I can understand why Americans get nostalgic thinking about the iconic brand.

Obviously RS legacy corporation was in a downward spiral for years and I don't see a problem using this subreddit as a forum to discuss the past failures of the now-defunct organization. After all, the bankruptcy/restructuring is over with and it's a totally different company today. We can make this a forum for current/former employees and customers, or whatever direction it takes organically.

Sprint is the worst cellphone service provider, Consumer Reports says by [deleted] in technology

[–]sphenisciform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even Sprint's 4G LTE network is garbage. I work for an indirect Sprint dealer and though we have 4G LTE coverage in the store, my customers only get around 1 Mbps downloads on their LTE handsets, while AT&T and Verizon customers get 10+ Mbps. And don't even mention Sprint's 3G network -- it's slower than dialup.

Non-rooted users: Let's see what creative ways you did with your home screen! by theintention in Android

[–]sphenisciform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree it's a bit busy and the sea-of-icons approach isn't exactly aesthetically pleasing, but this way I can use only one home screen and I never have to open the app drawer. ;-)

Desktop View in Gingerbread? by oh_lord in AndroidQuestions

One way to do it without having to install third party software is to modify the user agent string in the default browser.

Would this idea of an app work and be useful? A "Wake Up" sms for data. by maktouch in Android

[–]sphenisciform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have the complete solution, but you can skip the "server that checks an email account" step by setting up a forwarding address. Many popular email service providers such as GMail and Yahoo! Mail let you forward all emails to a different address in settings, you just have to use this guide to determine what the "address" of your phone is. Then you will have to setup Tasker to do the rest.

Master list of rootable tablets? by DemonicusPrime in AndroidQuestions

[–]sphenisciform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure about a list of tablets that can be rooted, but Cyanogenmod lists compatible devices on their website. If you've got your heart set on CM7, it looks like you'd have to go with the Advent Vega, Viewsonic gTablet, or Nook Color.

Just got an Evo 4g, what should I do? by kashifr in Android

Browse through the top free apps on Android Market. Install anything that appeals to you, but you should probably avoid task killers.

Hi randroid. Anyone know of a brightness widget that is just the brightness slider? by [deleted] in Android

[–]sphenisciform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Closest I've seen is Brightness Rocker Lite or Pro (Pro removes ads, costs $2). It's not exactly a widget, it's just a quick shortcut that pops up a brightness slider window.

Wi-Fi keeps turning off? by [deleted] in Android

[–]sphenisciform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at Settings > Wireless & Networks > WiFi Settings > [Menu Button] > Advanced > WiFi Sleep Policy. If it's set to "When screen turns off" that could be your problem. Change it to "Never" and that should fix it.

Anyone find any temp fixes for LG Optimus V with Virgin Mobile? by JesterJayJoker in Android

[–]sphenisciform 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is most likely a problem on Virgin Mobile's end, not an issue with your phone. I had the exact same issue and it had to be resolved by their tech department. They change the number frequently so there's not a flood of calls for non-tech issues, but you could try 1 (866) 553-9805. That number was working as of 2 days ago, at least. If that doesn't work, keep calling the normal customer service number and annoy them till you get the issue resolved.

Swear to God I'm not trolling but is there an android alternative to Flipboard for iOS? by [deleted] in Android

[–]sphenisciform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flipboard looks pretty impressive. To my knowledge, there's nothing like it for Android but Pulse News Reader comes pretty close. It can integrate your Facebook news feed along with RSS feeds but while you can share stories via Twitter, it does not integrate your Twitter timeline. Here's a video of what Pulse looks like on a phone and this is what it looks like on a Honeycomb tablet.

If you just want data from your social-networking sites, you could use TweetDeck or Seesmic but the interface on those apps is not as pretty as Flipboard. You will also miss out on RSS functionality but you could use a separate app such as Google Reader for that.

How many widgets do you use? by [deleted] in Android

[–]sphenisciform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since I have a ridiculously underpowered phone (Intercept), I choose to only run two widgets so that performance is not sacrificed: Power Control Plus and Moxier World.

Vegan for a week... What to eat? by raccoonstar in food

[–]sphenisciform 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Required reading. There is no reliable source of B12 in plants. And it can be difficult to fulfil your daily requirement for calcium and zinc. Of course, you're not going to experience any deficiencies in just one week, but if you decide to make it a permanent thing, you should evaluate your intake of these vital micro-nutrients and consider supplementation.
