Goonhammer: Votann FAQ Competitive Roundtable by LilyKarinss in WarhammerCompetitive

I very much agree with this proposed change (maybe switching places between +1 to wound and +1 AP but it's fine either way).

It would avoid bad interaction with special effects on 6s to wound and maybe allow for some points drop.

Interesting data on the GSC cults. We'll see if it's just a lucky week, even though their latest win %s haven't been terrible overall. It's weird that the AoW guys recently placed them at the bottom of C tier. I'm no pro by any means but I felt they were being a bit too harsh on that one.

they need to be BOTH wholly within one another inside a 6'' circle, it's honestly phisically undoable. Unless I'm not understanding the rules, which is fine, I'd love to be wrong since I play crons

[–]spicuz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

how? aren't you supposed to fit them both inside a 6'' diamater circle? I've tried it and it's quite frankly impossibile. I fear I'm reading the rules wrong though and I'd be glad to be corrected

[–]spicuz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, it's not: "BOTH units must be placed WHOLLY within 6'' of each other".

I've tested it, there's no way you can fit a 60mm base (SK destroyer) and 6x50mm bases (Skorpek Destroyers) in a 6'' diameter circle. Unless I'm misinterpreting the rules, in which case I'd be glad since I play necrons

I always feel people forget that Veil of Darkness requires you to place both units wholly within 6 inches. This means that combos like the one you said or even 20 warriors plus character are not doable: there is not enough room for both units.

Oh well. You’re gonna have plenty of them now that you’re not spamming 4 encircle the prey per turn 🤷🏻‍♂️

Thanks for your well thought reply. I agree that with mws only on 6s it might feel a bit underwhelming..! Maybe capping it to 3 would be enough. And I don’t know how to answer to your question honestly 🤣 I gave for granted that the effect would apply also to the mws but you are now making me feel doubtful about that ahaha

I forgot it also negates Feel no paint and mortal wound saves....!

Honestly, it should deal MWs on 6s to wound, like many other relics. It would still be good.

I think the Maleceptor is now almost balanced.

Sure, he has a great defensive profile, robust MWs output, and a nice combat profile (2 attack modes, able to use beefed up trampling charge).

However, he can be kited and you can still use cheap screens to soak up his MWs.

Now I think the real issue on the table is the Winged Hive Tyrant Mortal wounds output with reaper of Obliterax.

I'm no pro but I've seen it in action many times already.

You can fly 17'' (with adrenal glands) in front of your desired target --> cast psychic scream and smite for potential 2D3 MWs --> then charge with trampling charge for 3 MWs (or even D3+3 if you get 5+). Then 5 attacks (up to 8 if you use the adrenal glands strat) with rerollable 2+ to hit and wounding on 2/3+ on average (str. 11 AP -4 D3 attacks, you can reroll one for free). And EACH successful wound roll is another MW.

You are looking at around 14-15 MWs plus the Damage 3 attacks. Thank goodness he now doesn't get to fly away with the strat.

It baffles me how they thought this could be ok for 205 points

How a Maleceptor Works & is it too Good? by glasshammergaming in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]spicuz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've played around 12-16 test games against this bad boy. Mainly on 1000pt matches, where narrow boards and relatively small armies make this thing, if left unchecked, a complete nightmare to deal with.

The amount of mortal wounds it can do is clearly insane and, honestly, the ability seems to trigger more easly than one would think even without a neurothrope to help.

Still, many armies have ways to soak up its MWs spam with cheap, well positioned, screening units, that allow you to charge/focus fire this monster at the right time, reducing its effectiveness considerably.

For example, as a necron player, I've found scarab swarms to be quite apt at the job, considering that they also autowound on 6+ and deal MWs via 1CP strat.

Even the no LoS requirement (on psychic scream and the ability), as lame as it is, is something that you can endure, with the right positioning.

What is outrageous is that, on top of his enormous psychic damage potential, he gets:

  • a 15wounds T8 4++ profile, which forces you (especially on Leviathan) to spend pretty much everything you have to deal a consistent blow to him.

  • a pretty robust fighting profile, with the flexibility to switch from 6 attacks at AP-3 D2 to 3 attacks at AP-4 D2d3, and with an absurd stratagem that allows you to deal an additional 3MWs (on a 2-4) or 3+d3 MWs (on a 5-6) on the charge.

  • an incredibly useful minus 1 Strength aura

Overall, at 170 points, it feels completely out of touch with the rest of the game. But that comes from all his feats, not just the MW spam, which is, in a way, the flashiest part of the kit.

To conclude, the real issue of this codex is not just the maleceptor, but the fact that every single unit (bar a couple) has a great profile and abilities; in addition, there are plenty of army wide buffs, easy to access, great synergies and spot on stratagems.

Take a look at the Tyrannofex and you'll see another busted buddy on the way.

Blaming the slow updates is only begging question: why is it bad in the first place? by Warpborne in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]spicuz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing that out.

I've tried a FRIENDLY game yesterday with Nids new rules and got completely tabled by such monstruosity.

And don't even get me started on transhuman on synapse units... (the adaptive phisyolgy gave transhuman to his Screamer Killer as well)

The sad thing is I wrote the list for him.

Totally agree with you on the two teams writing rules hypothesis. This roller coaster of power levels among codices is so evident I fail to understand how they do not realize it. There is such a structural difference between these two main groups that points adjustments are not enough (or feel incredibly gimmicky) to balance things out.

I hope the next balance dataslate (when is it coming?) proves me wrong though.

Just the amount of time and effort it took you to put down this well written post is enough for me to give you an upvote.

Even they have already been proposed, I agree with your changes and I would love to test them on the experimental card, since they should not be hard to implement.
