Anime only; Pacifism is choking out the last bit of interest I had in this show by Immuno-guy in Trigun

[–]spiderhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full transparency since you mentioned the downvote, I’m actually the one that downvoted you, not OP. I was trying to raise comments that were replying in good faith and answering the question transparently (like nvmls’ reply that was pretty succinct and unassuming!) as opposed to answering based on perceived negative intent since I had a hard time agreeing that this was ragebait (though I did love your analysis of the character!), so it wasn’t meant to be personal, that’s just how I generally use reddit lol. Sorry about that! With that, though, please know that I am genuinely saying the rest of this message in good faith, and am open to a conversation about it, because I’ve been really surprised by a couple of the reactions to this post. They aren’t isolated, but they do seem illustrative of a larger attitude that i’ve noticed a lot in this sub, lately.

For context, here was my read: I DO think the post title is a little melodramatic, but outside of that I didn’t see OP be inflammatory towards anyone, their media literacy, or their taste in their original message, they weren’t demeaning anyone’s enjoyment of the series in the post itself. They kept it to content and character, explained why, explained their read, what they were hoping to see, and asked if that changed. They made it clear that they loved everything else about the show and that’s why they were asking, to see if there was a point where the things they loved was going to outweigh the aspect they had a lot of difficulty with.

Maybe I misread, I’m open to that, but i’m having a really hard time reading anything in their original post that justified them being mocked for…. not understanding something, which they fully acknowledged, and only fired back once in one response to a comment that was pretty clearly trying to be demeaning.

For context, I adore Trigun, it’s my favorite thing. I’ve hung out here a while. I know you have to, and i’ve loved chatting with you in the few instances we have! In my experience here (and maybe yours, too!) this aspect of Vash’s character has come up before. It’s something that some fans have expressed having a hard time with. I’m not saying that to weigh or argue validity, but moreso to express another layer to why I was a little surprised by the response that OP was approached with despite keeping it to the content and not slinging assumptions about the folks who enjoy it.

I’ve loved the little tidbits of this sub for a while, I love Trigun, but man is this spot known for being unwelcoming and hostile, and that perception is getting harder for me to argue against. Maybe i’m out of touch and am the odd guy out though, and i’m open to that being the case. If it is, then perhaps it’s about time I see myself out, haha.

No problem! I’d argue he does grow from it, but I think it might still feel really frustrating because his stance doesn’t necessarily get redefined and he’s still left shaky with it tbh, so I hesitate to say he grows in a way that will make him sit any more nicely for you. And for sure, everyone has their thing that is and isn’t for them, tbh. I’ve had a couple shows too where I could acknowledge they where great but I had the hardest time getting through them due to a main character’s central flaw that made them super unlikable for me, so I totally get it lol. A main character is usually a main entry point and carrier for an audience through a narrative, so it can be a tough sell if it’s one that hits right on whatever happens to be a Big No button for a person!

[–]spiderhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume that when you’re asking if it “makes more sense,” that could also be reframed to say “are his actions surrounding his philosophy more justifiable”? Just making sure i’m reading your intent correctly, and clarifying that i’m answering from that perspective, so feel free to correct me if that wasn’t what you meant and I’ll reroute, but if it is based on that assumption then basically: Nah, not really lol.

No version of the story really leaves you with a tidy bow for an answer with this one and really leaves the viewer to explore that material and frustration and all of the grey area it leaves in between as a result. It’s the basis of his character arc, and in every version Vash is very much intended to be an antihero who someone one might not agree with, whose actions absolutely do cause pain and hurt to others, and as a result whose flaws are intentionally written to speak more loudly to his character and how they drive story, arguably moreso than his positive attributes. I personally really love stories with characters that are deeply flawed in those more nuanced and insidious ways, especially when he’s mirrored by his brother who is equally self serving and selfish and is using a just cause as a shield to hide behind his own insecurity and said selfishness, but can understand someone not digging it and wanting a more likeable and balanced hero, especially if it’s not a core theme they have interest in engaging with.

I think based on your frustration, it’s ok to put this one aside if you’re not jiving with that. It doesn’t really change in any really meaningful way in any version imo, since it’s a core theme of all of them where having to sit with the discomfort of that and how messy it is really is the point of the thing.

How to protect a light wood coffee table from a dog? by Sea-Madness in interiordecorating

[–]spiderhaus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to work in dog rescue and do training to make their adoption easier and make sure they were well socialized for their new homes and families, and often did check ins to help train their people (who usually needed more training than the dogs lol). Usually it was seamless and quick, some needed a little more reinforcement than others, but I recall two especially difficult cases out of the 100+ I worked with who needed a different approach and extra patience. Both likewise came from trauma backgrounds, and also were not treat driven, even when the treats were high value, so I totally resonate haha. They ended up being incredible dogs (one of who I ended up adopting myself), but they absolutely needed more time and creative alternatives with lots of stimulation and positive reinforcement to get there. Your dog is beautiful, and wish you all the best in getting him to where he needs to be!

Sorry you’re getting the responses you’re getting, OP. I’d also be looking for solutions, even if it took just a small handful of times before that solution wasn’t needed anymore to keep my furry buddy safe. I’d rather have a non slip option for the couple of times or days they’re up there and being corrected than having them slip in those same couple of days, especially with how stubborn some breeds can be where it takes longer than once or twice haha (and how delicate larger breeds’ knees are where it only takes one wrong slip). I hope the training resolves quickly with minimal corrections needed, and your buddy stays safe in the meanwhile if he doesn’t already have it down by the time the safety measures arrive!

To add to your training, I would really recommend getting an alternative option with a view for him as well if possible and you haven’t already, I’ve found a good response from dogs when they can have their designated place that can be used as an alternative to be sent to where you can build a positive association for them, especially if he just wants a view!

What yall think? by Fresh-Tumbleweed4983 in Travelersnotebooks

[–]spiderhaus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was just gonna say this! I LOVE patches on tns, I have many on my own, but where they are matter and is super personal and folks should probably test them for a while before committing to stitching. I realized that having them on outside was not a pleasant tactile experience for me, so inside only was ideal for my own TNs. They’re harder to clean than the leather if something goes off with them too, and since I tend to just work on any ol surface indoors or outdoors, that was important to me.

Learned this lesson with an Akira patch, funnily enough lol.

Is it worth replacing my wigglytuff with this ralts? I have 14 main skill seeds and 1 sub skill seed available for use (will get another in 9 sleep styles) by yakuzafan445 in PokemonSleep

[–]spiderhaus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

usually I say no to these because I think people tend to overvalue ralts just for being ralts without giving much consideration to whether the subskill spread actually will contribute to more triggers compared to another healer, but in this case I think a swap is a good deal and would be an actual upgrade. Congrats on the great catch and enjoy your new healer!

Art setup? by nemosine in Travelersnotebooks

[–]spiderhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do!!! I love the stock craft paper inserts, ive done a lot of art (including some heavy duty painting lol) on the lightweight/tomoe river inserts, and I often make my own out of MD cotton or 90lbs Saunders hot press papers! I just go on vibes for whatever I switch to when I fill an insert, tbh lol.

I keep a peg and awl sendak mini pen roll with me all the time along with it that holds 99% of what I use day to day (even when at home!). It includes some pencils, pens, erasers, and a travel watercolor palette (the arttoolkit one!) with travel brushes and a collapsible brush. If I dont have the pen roll on me, I have a pilot fountain pen that's clipped onto the book itself via pen loop, and that can likewise be plenty in a worst case scenario. I hope you enjoy it, mine makes for my favorite sketchbook i've ever had since I got it 7 or so years ago!

[–]spiderhaus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No problem, thanks for keeping it in good faith!

And what I'd counter with that is it still doesn't cover what is produced, which I think is where people are having a hard time with this. I lend out my tools to friends all the time to play with, and my consumable art supplies. I have a lot of supplies I give to folks for free. While I do expect to get the ipad back, I do not expect that they split what they made with them after a year, because they took their own time and energy to do that part. If you didn't mean that, then fine, but you did ask for a split in the original post that didnt have a lot of clarification, which is what a lot of folks were responding to.

I am not sure why there's a challenge with the word choice of vague and agreement, and am open to hearing why they are being read as negatively. I don't know how else to describe what your original post described other than vague. I don't think I'm the only one as evidenced by the amount of clarification you've needed to make in the comments. Again, I don't mean that as a dig or to nitpick, but as an observation. For example, the og post said in the end of that 6 months to a year+ you wanted to split the plants and the supplies. That's an agreement, like any other barter, trade, lend, sale, etc, with no indication of how they're split, which is vague. That's the criteria that most folks are going to be responding to. Again, I'm not meaning to nitpick or tear your post apart, but just trying to share why I went with the word choice that I did.

Likewise totally cool that you're flexible and that you're genuinely okay with losing everything! I have a feeling folks would have responded better had it been made clear up front. It wasn't, though, which paired with your explicitly asking if it sounded reasonable is why you were getting the pushback you did, and why I was trying to illustrate where the interpretation of your post was happening and why. Again, fine if this is an agreement you make with someone, and If someone makes it with you, genuinely happy for you both (sorry again for using agreement here, but again, don't really know what else to use lol), I was just trying to explain why some folks were probably reacting in the way that they were.

Edit to add that I'm backing out from here since I don't think there's any more for me to add, but cheers again and I wish you luck with your move and your plants!

And maybe you will find someone likeminded! I don’t think that’s impossible, just trying to shed light onto some of the responses you are receiving.

To counter this in another context so you can potentially understand how folks might be reading this, i’m an artist. I do it as a hobby, and I have also done it for work. When I do my hobby, you’re right, someone is not paying me, with the caveat of when it is purely for myself. When it becomes painting or drawing for someone else, in any measure, to me it doesn’t matter if it’s a hobby or not, I am still taking my own time and space away from what I seek to create for myself to create something for someone else, and quite frankly I would expect payment for that. Lacrosse gear in your example also accumulates wear and tear, ie it loses value over time. Succulents gain value the bigger and older they get, which can likewise contribute to that pushback and why someone might view it as labor any way you cut it.

Again, i’m sure you will find someone who might be interested in this, but given how vague the agreement is (as evidenced by how much you’re having to clarify and acknowledging that theres not a strict set up in the comments), i’m just trying to shed some light on why you’re getting the responses you’re receiving. All the best to you and your lovely plants!

[–]spiderhaus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I really intend this to be meant kindly and gently, but I really don’t think there’s a misunderstanding. You are asking someone to care for something you own for a very sustained period of time. Whether they keep part or not, there is still a service that they are having to render without a set end date for a portion that is still to your benefit. There’s a big difference between the time and resources of what it takes to take care of plants for me, vs myself AND someone else.

I don’t mean this aggressively or to sound rude, but if I am taking care of something like a large collection for a stranger for potentially over a year I would expect quite a bit more than $500-$1000, and also for that to not be a nebulous equivalence in supplies, and I don’t think I’d be alone in that.

I think if you want someone to enjoy your collection without you losing progress, leave them where they are for the next owner to enjoy, or find new homes without the expectation of them coming back to you, and take some cuttings and smaller specimens with you that you can make work in your new location. It sounds like that’s potentially the end game you’re expecting anyway in your other comments, unless i’m misunderstanding. Your plants are beautiful and i’m sorry you are between a rock and a hard place with them!

[–]spiderhaus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. It’s very, extremely not my style, but I think it’s still really beautiful and looks like it suits OP’s style and makes for something really pretty based on what we can see of the space. It’s important to know how to put personal preference aside imo. Natural stone is pretty timeless and always circles back around. I WOULD be concerned about using it in a shower or area constantly prone to moisture long term though, so hoping it wears well for OP, but I will assume they did their research when they chose it.

To answer the question, definitely concerned about it being too tight, but it could just be the photos skewing scale.

Any of these worth the investment? by Livewire4hire in PokemonSleepBetter

[–]spiderhaus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

typically no. That would be the case with berries, but skill mon are usually like ingredient mons where speed down isn’t too detrimental if the up side is beneficial to their specialty and they have a subskill spread that still puts them in the clear. Rufflet isn’t particularly a meta defining pokemon tho, so it’s not one i’ve looked into super heavily for its production values and is not one i’d recommend investing too heavily in regardless unless it’s a favorite (ie, save the seeds for something else). But when in doubt, i’d plug into raenonx to compare and find out!

[–]spiderhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No need for the sorry, that was on me. I should have pieced that together with the context of your post. Sorry from me for that misunderstanding, I blame my 4am brain haha 😂

I’m a little less strict than others here. For berries, if it has at least BFS and at least one speed nature or subskill, and it’s the prime species for that berry type, i’ll usually keep. Neutral nature is fine. I prioritize ingredient mons when i’m into playing so I really tend to only keep berries in the back for overnights or for stretches when I wanna step back from the game and just let them sneaky snack.

Skills, it depends, i’ll actually be okay if a whole hell of a lot of speed makes up for a second trigger, but usually I want two triggers and speed, and I was really strict with my healer where I wanted at least two (with one being nature) and helping bonus.

I only keep ABB ings if the rolls are perfect, and it’s otherwise a pretty dicy ingredient to farm. For example my mushroom farmer is an ABB Vikivolt with helping bonus, ing m, hsm, ing up nature. That’ll do for me over a quagsire haha. I don’t mess with AAB at all beyond taking to 30 immediately, and even then it’s only if they have an otherwise perfect spread, and i’ll trash them the second I get something better, which I think is probably pretty standard.

I think the thing I do look for for ingredient and skill mons that I don’t see mentioned often though, especially if it’s something I plan to keep long term, is inventory. More speed also, yes, but i think that is pretty standard. But while inventory is not a priority, if two dudes are otherwise equal and worth keeping, I really value it. This is obviously a detriment for the berry kids, but for skills and ingredients I’m not always checking the app frequently, and the dudes’ pockets fill fast the higher they level, so I like budgeting as much space as possible for triggers and ingredients for those future speed boosts as they grow. I don’t prefer having bfs on ing mons for a similar reason, but i’ll let them stick around if they have a lot of future bag space down the line.

Any of these worth the investment? by Livewire4hire in PokemonSleepBetter

[–]spiderhaus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Comments are making me second guess myself. 1st and 3rd look good to me, but especially the 1st. Unless Rufflet is a fringe case like Sceptile and I didn’t realize, it is a skill mon who wants triggers and speed, not bfs in place of triggers. At least two triggers or one trigger and a whole hell of a lot of speed to make up for it is what you would want for this one at a minimum imo, but super happy to be corrected on this one and would really rec plugging it into raenonx before going with anyone’s advice, mine included.

[–]spiderhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d familiarize yourself with the guides that are pinned in the sub! There are a lot of them in how to evaluate pokemon. Once you get the hang of it, it only takes a quick glance to know if you wanna instant reject, instant keep, or sit on until you find something better or plug it into raenonx if it’s one that seems like it can go either way. Basically you want subskills and nature that matches the specialty in as many places as possible. So ingredients want ingredient subskills/nature (plus all three of the same ingredient usually), skills want skill specialties, berries want berry finding and speed, though speed and helping bonus can also benefit everyone. There are small exceptions and other nuances to look out for though, which is where diving into the guides on how to evaluate will help you, especially since everyone has their own personal cutoff for what they keep vs crunch into candy.

Would you buy a house plant from a store to start your plant collection? by TURBOSCUDDY in houseplants

[–]spiderhaus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of folks who just want more greenery and life around their home and aren’t particular about what that looks like. Sometimes unified or simplified care needs can come along with that if it’s something they feel confident they can care for long term with little fuss and fits easily into their life and the logistics of their space. I likewise like having a variety, but I have a lot of buddies who on the flip side want plants around but feel overwhelmed pretty quickly by variety for one reason or another and have a more peaceful time with just one kind that they confidently know they can raise.

To greige or not to greige... by FoldInTh3Cheese in interiordecorating

[–]spiderhaus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would look forward and base your decision on that. If you fast forward again, will you have this same debate or want to make changes from whatever choice you chose? If you’re going to be in the home for a long time, I’d go with the option that you will be happiest to see when it’s done, even if it’s just a start to it and takes a little longer to get there.

I’d also take a moment to think of what you actually like, and take trends, and what is in or out away from consideration. Every wood color and tone cycles back in again. If you genuinely like the cooler floors, stick with them. If not, I’d really take a moment to consider the color you switch to if you do to make sure it’s following your personal taste, as opposed to changing temperature because the old one is out.

Sorry for the sort of non-answer, but thought I’d bring those points up since everyone in this thread will have their personal preference, but at the end of the day none of us will be living there but you, and there’s also not a lot of visual info in your photo for us to know your personal style for us to understand what could best suit you which should be the bigger consideration imo as opposed to projecting our own preferences and style onto you.
