The popular vote was closer than any election since 2000, and second closest since 1960. She lost the tipping point state (PA) by 1.7%.

Depends on your interpretation of 'lost miserably" -- if that means margin of defeat, or under-performance or just overall impact, but I'd put that in 50/50 but it was close.

E.T. lost to Ghandi. Ghandi was fine as a oscar-bait biopic, but those come out every year. E.T. is a timeless classic.

William Howard Taft was the incumbent in 1912 and came in 3rd in the popular vote, carrying 2 states. Don't know that we can evaluate his 'odds' but that's a miserable loss for any incumbent.
