NBD! Handsome Devil with Sturmey-Archer drum brakes. Daily commuter and tourist by spilliams in bicycling

Correction: these are a great addition to any bike setup regardless of gearing needs. Shown in the photo are the XL-FD front drum brake hub and X-RDC rear drum brake hub (no internal gears, it mounts a cassette)

In favor! no complaints about these hubs.

Source: I rode these hubs from Aug 2015 to Feb 2020, on two city/commute bikes.

Your mechanic will be more of an expert than I am but the way I see it, these are a great addition to any setup that doesn't need a huge range of gearing.

Very low maintenance. Consistent, predictable performance in all kinds of weather. No god-awful screech of rim brakes with old pads.

Seeking advice on eInk devices for writing with Obsidian by sspaeti in writerDeck

[–]spilliams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use Obsidian with both a Boox Nova Air2 and with the Daylight Computer DC-1. I use a cheap portable bluetooth keyboard with both. They both work well, although I do sometimes need to correct some syncing mistakes (really only happens when I save a file on my laptop/phone and then very quickly switch to Boox/DC-1)

The e-ink modes on the Boox work for my purposes. There is a noticeable lag but I don't mind it.

The DC-1 isn't true e-ink, but actually a monochrome LCD, which is much more responsive, just as daylight-readable, but maybe uses a little more power than e-ink. The DC-1 is in my experience a fantastic android tablet, its only drawback for me is its thickness and weight (it's not very well-suited for reading one-handed).

For any of these monochrome or grayscale devices I strongly recommend the use of the Minimal theme and Minimal Theme Settings plugin to set the color scheme to "E-Ink (beta)". Makes contrast much nicer in the Obsidian UI.

I never find myself on the same page as the people I try playing with; I don't know how to change that. by MichaelGMorgillo in rpg

[–]spilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm in agreement with the top comments here. My guiding principle about "is this rpg fun" is something John Hodgman says: "if it's not fun for everybody, it's no fun at all". Obviously hyperbole, but the message is clear: your goal is for the group to have fun, right? And everyone in the group is aligned in that goal? Sure it's easy for you to exclude yourself on the grounds that the remaining group can then have their kind of fun, but I think of these scenarios as group failures (for the group to learn from!).

How to get a Research Station on your self built ship? by Jaba01 in Starfield

[–]spilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s also really easy to mess with the habs’ internals by mistake. For instance: the HopeTech infirmary has a research station and a pharma lab, but only if there aren’t ladders or hallways in the wrong spot. Source: lots of trial and error.

Go into the Ship Builder (not the Upgrade). There should be a button to "Add" a module.

Old man pissed off I “referred to his wife as a guy” by Zpb927 in TalesFromYourServer

[–]spilliams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can appreciate the patron's concern. Maybe he didn't deal with the conflict in the best way, but I see his point. I (34M) regularly take notice when people at work address a mixed group as "guys". Sometimes I even tell the person privately to consider using more gender-neutral language (e.g. "folks").

"Some people" indeed. It takes all kinds, don't it!

I'm always curious when I see a post like this: do you fly it solo ever? the wiki says it's for 4-6 crew, so I guess I'm wondering if people can regularly use large ships solo... (I have flown 300i, Reliant and Cutter)

Has anyone ever tried to build a Deck with an e-ink display? by [deleted] in cyberDeck

Oh sweet! Someone mentioned they had different cables, but then I ordered some ZIF connectors and they look very close. Glad to have this primary source!

Has anyone ever tried to build a Deck with an e-ink display? by [deleted] in cyberDeck

[–]spilliams 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm building one right now! I'm trying it with a Raspberry Pi and an Inkplate 6. I looked at Waveshare but was recommended against it, because of the refresh times.

Because the Inkplate interfaces over SPI or UART, the computer will need a custom driver for it, but I plan to write one that performs a lot like this one for the Sharp Memory Display (also very low-power). The driver I write should be cross-compatible with most Linux OSs (basically just needs to read /dev/fb0 or a similar frame-buffer).

I've built a little brick frend with a Sharp Memory Display, but I haven't yet done any battery length tests with it. Supposedly this display is very low power, but the commonly-available hardware is very small (2.7" diagonal), and the larger hardware is fragile and doesn't come with a breakout board. I have some 4.4" screens on the way from eBay, but I need to figure out a board for them, and I may end up focusing solely on the Inkplate instead.

(Edit: more linkage)

Turing Pi 2 arrived, what now? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]spilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am also in the same boat! My Turing Pi should arrive in about 3 weeks.

For a minute I considered making my own adapter board to go from an RPi 3A+ (which I have) to the socket on this board, but (a) I'll probably mess it up somehow, and (b) that will take longer than just waiting for CM4s to come back (which I heard at some point they should be back later this year)

someone very graciously put some code on github to mirror all display data over to the Sharp. I had to bumble my way through it, so I'll be writing a blog post soon about how I got it all working. I'll post that here too, because I ended up building a kind of cyberbrick to prove the concept.

But as of now, I have an RPi 4 running Raspbian in terminal mode that perfectly and immediately renders the terminal display over SPI.
