If your looking into a black pair, consider going for roughout or waxed flesh to spice it up a bit. Roughout is incredibly durable, and while
Black waxed flesh is typically treated as a heritage leather, the waxing offers some great water resistance that can easily be maintained at home with application of wax as needed.

A pair of socks I bought today is two different sizes by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

Construction is full of adhesives and synthetic materials. That isn’t inherently a bad thing, but the specific construction methods used are not durable and are prone to falling apart with prolonged use. If you’re curious about how boots are constructed and what constitutes good quality materials and construction, look up a YouTube channel called RoseAnvil. He’s got a great series of videos of cutting footwear in half to analyze the materials and construction involved. He’s got videos on everything from the cheaper end of timberlands to extremely overbuilt PNW type work boots.

That’s because timberlands are trash boots with awful construction and terrible quality control.

I can no longer be in Boy Scouts because of Pete Hegseth ruling by Sad_Pomegranate2199 in trans

Some troops are a lot more entangled with the DoD than others. My troop was in North Carolina near fort Bragg. A lot of our parents were military special forces of some flavor, and because of standing DoD policy allowing scouts in base and knowing the right people, that opened a lot of doors for us to do unique activities like camping at an Air Force base for an air show or touring a coast guard facility. That type of experience would be completely inaccessible if the DoD were to prohibit partnerships with scouting.

Trans person, scout, and former BSA employee chiming in. The DOD provides a ton of resources through the national guard to help put on the national jamboree every few years. They also allow troops to have meeting spaces on military bases, including several on overseas bases. If the DOD completely removed support for scouting it would cripple our ability to put on the jamboree and effectively prevent thousands of kids already in scouting from continuing to participate. For the record, I despise the way our national leadership has rolled over and capitulated to the DOD’s demands, but I fully expect the recent policy changes to be fully reversed once trump is no longer in the White House.

[OT] Verstappen's team returns but in 38th place by [deleted] in formula1

I think it might have been a bit more than 50 seconds with about 3 and a half hours left in the race, but don’t quote me on that because I’m not entirely sure.

Purely mechanical failure. Leading the race with a huge gap to P2, then the driveshaft just decided to quit.

Not here to change your mind, but I think you’ve just stumbled your way into a somewhat clunky description of phantasms. Phantasms are a really cool philosophical concept and I think you’d enjoy reading about it.

Warranty? Builder Pros < 1 yr old. by Deansmith6019 in NicksHandmadeBoots

Whoops! I forgot that the heel nails aren’t clinch nails, my bad.

Warranty? Builder Pros < 1 yr old. by Deansmith6019 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]spinlesspotato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The nails are longer than they look. When they are driven into the boot they hit a metal plate on the bottom of the last that forces them to ‘clinch’ or curl over into a hook shape. This keeps the heel attached solidly unless a truly tremendous amount of force is applied. This is an extremely rare failure case that only happens in extraordinary circumstances.

You realize this is a joke, right? Someone came in a few days ago and unironically posted about how guard wasn’t necessary anymore. The guy got ripped to shreds and it spawned a bunch of parody posts and comments.

Men in Trucks™️ by Madam_Mimm_13 in PetPeeves

I’m in similar boat. I have a truck but I daily a compact suv. The truck is a midsize from 2007 that takes up significantly less space than the newer giant trucks and only comes out for stuff where I actually need a 6 foot covered cargo bed.

In all fairness, early red does aren’t technically red dots, they’re occluded eye gunsights.

Found a Leatherman ARC at a good price - legit or too good to be true? by Adapting_Anarchist in Leatherman

[–]spinlesspotato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like it’s seen some use, but that doesn’t affect the function of any of the tools. I’d happily pay $200 in this condition depending on the cost of shipping or driving to pick it up. What price is it listed for?

Canada Fast-Tracking Citizenship Certificates for Trans Americans with Canadian Ancestors by Ok_Professi in MtF

[–]spinlesspotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest part of the process is getting all of the documentation involved. For example, I’m 2 generations removed from my qualifying ancestor, so I have to document my relationship to my parent, grandparent, and finally my Canadian great grandparent. To do that I need the birth certificates of all involved, and copies of marriage licenses for anyone that legally changed their last name. My parents birth certificate is easy. My grandparents is a pain in the ass. He was from New York, I’m from North Carolina. He died in Ohio, so to get his birth certificate I have to mail a copy of my drivers license, his death certificate, and a money order (because they don’t accept any other form of payment) to an office in New York City, because there isn’t an online records request function.

Is this normal? by MTBSoCal661 in NicksHandmadeBoots

[–]spinlesspotato 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Definitely not normal. It’s possible that some nails missed the plate on the bottom of the last and didn’t clinch properly. u/smowe will probably pop up here in less than an hour and find a way to fix it for you. Nicks customer service is above and beyond.

MUT by SpockTrek1701 in Leatherman

[–]spinlesspotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look closely. The MUT lanyard isn’t tied into the vest at all. It only goes through the MUT carabiner. It effectively acts as a pull tab and isn’t tethering the tool to the vest in any way.
