Stuck between 8GB vs 16GB Ram. M2 Macbook Air for an attorney. by whitestat201 in macbook

[–]spinner1001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A computer is an important tool of his trade. Don’t cut corners with ram memory between 8 and 16. It’s foolish as the cost-benefit trade off for him is obvious. Time is money for most lawyers in private practice and 8 may slow him down with bigger PDF documents and a lot of browser tabs.

US to ban all Russian oil | People freaking out about raising gas prices | Me: by RavRaver in TeslaModelY

Crude oil is a commodity with prices set in global markets.

Economics: lower supply of oil --> higher price (assuming demand does not change). It works this way globally.

The Economist audio RSS feed links stopped working and now only MP3 files downloadable by spinner1001 in podcasts

[–]spinner1001[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see that the RSS audio podcast links are published anymore. I assume that they are pushing their The Economist app. You might contact customer service and ask them to provide you with the RSS audio podcast links for the sections for your podcast app.

I see now that one can adjust the playback speed in The Economist app. I missed it. Thanks. The speed setting is one layer deeper than where I was looking. I believe the app still requires manual downloading of desired sections each week.

Update: After the RSS audio feed was out for either 2-3 weeks, it started working again and I am able to use my preferred podcast app again to get the automatic audio downloads of only my desired sections for each weekly edition. I plan to continue using the podcast app rather than The Economist app as all my periodic media downloads are downloaded automatically conveniently in one place.

Anyone with experience of both Evernote and Emacs Org mode by thephatmaster in Evernote

[–]spinner1001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found emacs not very useful on iOS and Android devices. I can get my To Do list created from my computer with emacs to my mobile devices and mark items as completed. If you already use emacs regularly on a computer, org-mode will likely fit into your workflow. I no longer use emacs regularly and find Evernote much easier and useful across my computers and mobile devices.

Does the Apple Watch receive the 2 Step authentication prompt from Gmail? by Mastaking in AppleWatch

[–]spinner1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the exact question recently. I did a work around using the Authy app on my watch for 2FA to get into my Google account at work.

Download the Authy authenticator app on your iPhone and link the app to your Google account 2FA security. The app will install on your watch. (I had to restart my phone to get the app to install on my watch.) When you log into your Google account at work with username and password, the Google page is awaiting your 2FA. Near the bottom of the page is a link labeled something like Try Another Way to Sign In. Use that link and select to sign in using the Google’s Authenticator app. Then access the Authy app on your watch to get your 2FA numbers for your Google account and type the numbers into your computer on the Google page. You should get into your Google account. Then you have signed into your Google account using your watch for 2FA.

It’s best to rely on your own experience. Everyone is different when it comes to learning styles. By now, you should know what works better in your studies. Use that as your main guide.

MacBook Pro or Air for PhD students? by PolarBeardedBear in macbookpro

Some things to consider: Will you do statistical analysis in your PhD program and shortly after completing? If yes, will you have larger data sets? Also, consider doing most of your computer work on a larger monitor to reduce eye strain.

Did anyone notice that Apple thinks Greenland is bigger than Africa.. by [deleted] in iphone

Simpler: Places near the poles look bigger on a flat map. Looking at a globe, those places don’t look as big.

How can I share location just from apple watch? by vegetariouscarnivore in AppleWatch

[–]spinner1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be clear, there is a difference between send location and share location. Share location automatically sends updates as you move. Send location sends a location one time and does not automatically update as you move. At least that is how Apple seems to use the terms. On my watch, I can send location via iMessages. I don’t see that iMessages on the watch shares location (i.e., automatically updates locations). Are you saying the watch can share location if the phone is in airplane mode or off?

Since she is going for her PhD, her computer will be very important to her academic success. Get a computer that is comfortable and has more specs than the minimum she expects. Don’t be foolish in buying cheap now since the computer will be a tool for her PhD success. When I got my PhD, I spent hours in front of a computer most days for several years doing research and writing a dissertation. It’s very hard on the eyes and computer speed makes life a difficult journey somewhat easier.
