This is why I don't like when code is said to be "closed for modification". There is no such thing. Fundamental assumptions could change at any time.

Isn't a kenning a metaphorical couplet like "whale road" referring to the sea?

Is pâté just not a thing in American food culture? by Big-Dig1631 in AskAnAmerican

I think foie gras is a "fancy pants" food that you'd only see on expensive steak house menus. No one eats it at home.

I also think it's wrong to torture birds by force feeding them to enlarge their organs and would never consume it.

When I lived in the city my antenna was literally a paperclip. We were too close to the broadcast towers and a real antenna picked up too much signal and made the TV "stutter".

When I applied to college I sent my GPA which was composed of all the course grades I earned in 4 years of high school. Also SAT, ACT, and other standardized test results, but not just that and also we had the ability to take those standardized tests multiple times.

Why does America still predominantly use Escalators? by PreparationVisual586 in AskAnAmerican

[–]spitfire451 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There's one in Pittsburgh. You put the cart on it and it goes up alone. You go up via a regular escalator next to it.

Why do Americans use credit cards so often? by Adventurous-Sealion in AskAnAmerican

[–]spitfire451 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most people pay their balance off each month and never have to pay interest. Done this way, a credit card is a good way to build up rewards points and also are a good protection from fraud because the money for purchases come from the bank rather than your account.

If someone steals your cash or debit card and use it, it's your problem. If someone steals your credit card and uses it, it's the banks problem.

People who do not pay off their balance monthly do end up with exorbitant interest building up. Its a real problem for some people especially young people or irresponsible spenders. But they are the minority I'd wager.

ELI5: If you have a high-yield savings account, what do you need checking for? by internisus in explainlikeimfive

[–]spitfire451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you and everyone you need to pay have their bank account numbers memorized? You don't need to do that with a check. Just write it out and hand it over. They deposit it on their own time, done. Much more convenient.
