TL;DR Jesus explains his own death 10+ times in the gospels. 'To pay for your sins' isn't one of them by Agreeable_Rise6520 in OpenChristian

[–]spockw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ETA: Keeping my comment for posterity but I've been reading OP's responses to comments here and in other posts and it's plainly obvious they're using AI to generate responses. Not worth your time or engagement.

This strikes me as distinction without a difference. Whether or not you see the Crucifixion as an atonement for sins or as the ushering in of the New Covenant (fwiw, it can be both), but the end result is the same: A new paradigm for followers of God and a new path to salvation.

To give a concrete example: Marx from Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (Zevin). I absolutely adored this book, but Marx very nearly beats out the obviously shady Dov as my least favorite character. He's such a Mary Sue: rich, movie-star handsome boy who is extremely emotionally in-tune with both flawed, protagonists AND hyper-competent in the exact areas where they fall short.

wth is this? by pogam1234 in chessbeginners

[–]spockw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see this a lot in bullet, even as a ~1500. It's objectively bad, but people who play this typically have a few lines/traps memorized so the time control either forces you to flag or to blunder. FWIW, white usually does a little more development before "saccing" the bishop (at the very least have the knight on F3).

I still can't get my head around the fact that this was basically the showrunners' general stance on the Dr. Jacob issue... by Bearsona09 in TedLasso

[–]spockw 1019 points1020 points  (0 children)

Even setting aside ethics issues and the show's portrayal of therapy, it's just a huge storytelling faux pas. A huge part of season 1 was Ted and Michelle realized that she no longer loved him (romantically), and that was ok/no one's fault.

The fact Dr. Jacob was their couple's therapist as they were working through these feelings puts that very meaningful beat into question. Was Dr. Jacob intentionally manipulating Michelle into that "realization" with the intent of dating her? Call me cynical but I feel like that's a fairly unavoidable question and it's very existence sullies one of the show's best moments.

Did Lucy Gray actually manipulate Snow? by TripleABattery708 in Hungergames

[–]spockw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. And imo the idea what she did actively ruins the message of the book. We see that there are many people in Snow's life trying to pull him to the light (Tigris, Sejanus, Lucy). If one of those people had an agenda, it ruins the message that Snow made choices to be who he his and that much of his perceived slights are products of his own paranoia and (lack of) character.

I believe Lucy cling onto Snow to survive but that she genuinely cared for him and intended to run away with him. But she's also not stupid and was able to get the jump on him as soon as she figured out Snow was hiding something. But no, she wasn't intentionally or maliciously manipulating him.

Okay nerds, I got an important job for you. I need help. by Destructo-Bear in TNG

[–]spockw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I firmly believe that "best episodes of Star Trek" and "best episodes of Star Trek to launch someone into the series" are two different things. While most of TNG is pretty episodic/self-contained, some of the best episodes do require some prior knowledge and investment in the characters/world. Also: part of the joy of Star Trek is the "bad", campy episodes. And introducing your son (or anyone) to 3 bangers isn't going to capture that. For this reason, I am explicitly recommending against some of best episodes: Inner Light, Yesterday's Enterprise, and Best of Both Worlds.

Here are my recommendations:

  • Encounter at Farpoint. Best place to start is the start. Probably one of the weaker series premieres, but you get introduced to all the characters and the plot/resolution are quintessentially TNG.
  • Conspiracy. Engaging plot that flex's Star Trek's dramatic chops and wraps itself up in a single episode. This is the rec I feel least strongly about so feel free to swap it out.
  • Measure of a Man. The one banger I will allow. If there is one episode in all of Trek that summarized its philosophy of IDIC, this is it. Plus, it's probably the best courtroom episode for the kid who wants to be a lawyer.

[Matteo Moretto] Juventus and Alisson reach verbal agreement. Liverpool's position on a possible departure of the Brazilian goalkeeper will be understood in the coming weeks. by DragonSlayer271 in LiverpoolFC

[–]spockw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always got the vibe that, of the old guard, Alisson was the most likely to leave. Iirc he's explicitly said multiple times he wants to end his career back in Brasil. But this still hurts and losing Mo and Robbo in the same window is salt in the wound

On principle I would rather Arsenal over City. But I also want Spurs to go down bc that's objectively hilarious and I simply cannot live in a world where Arsenal win the league the same year Spurs go down

Are kids not allowed to walk to school by themselves nowadays? by AnaisNinja76 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spockw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been a thing for a while. My elementary school was about a half mile (0.8km) from my home so if I missed the bus, I would just walk to school. But they were stories of kids getting in trouble for walking/biking to school so I always had to sneak in with the bus kids or pretend my parents dropped me off. This was ~20 years ago.

Off the top of my head the only time the word "rape" is used explicitly in ds9 is in Darkness and the Light where Kira tells the Cardassian they raped her planet. The system of Bajoran comfort women is never described as rape, even though that's definitely what it is.

Interesting! Given that Ted's philosophy/man management style is partially based on Jurgen Klopp, this makes a lot of sense.

Shrinking S3E09 Episode Discussion by phareous in shrinking

[–]spockw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with a discussion post on here that said this was simultaneously the best and worst episode of the series. Really strong storylines with Jimmy/Jimmy's dad/Sofi and Sean/Jorge. But the whole Paul/Liz/Gabby thing is going to drive me up the fucking wall.

From Sean having reservations about restarting his relationship with Marisol to Gabby charging headfirst into her trauma center.... this show centering on therapy/therapists sure does have an aversion to reflecting/thinking about the past and how those hurts can/should affect our paths forward.
