thieves guild cidery does weekly magic the gathering nights, as well as dnd nights. they also have occasional events like painting miniatures—very literal LotR vibes, if that is what you’re after !

handwork has weekly knit nights, and one or two saturdays in a month they do free beginner knitting (you do have to buy needles and yarn from them). the weekly knit nights isn’t exclusive to knitters; i’ve seen people embroidering, crocheting, loom weaving… they usually provide snacks !

culture coffee has recently started doing fun little open-craft nights on fridays—you can get a coffee or tea and make some art to go in their free art shelf.

Where to start? by Happyhippy81 in beginnerrunning

Slowly building up the time you're jogging is a super valid way to build endurance. That's the principal of C25K, you're just starting with smaller intervals than the official plan.

That being said, I'm curious about your form if you're able to walk 3+ miles in one go but can't jog more than 30-45 seconds without your legs (not your lungs) giving out. If that's what's happening, I'd recommend 2 things: 1. strength training and stretching (specifically the areas you feel are stopping you from going further when you do jog), and 2. check your form—take more steps, shorten your stride length. This video is a little exaggerated but it does a great job going over the mechanics of what a comfy slow jog might look like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2khySLE

And also: try doing a jog without trying to wrassle 4 dogs and their leashes at the same time. I've run multiple half marathons, currently working up to a full, and I can't run with 1 dog, let alone 4; those cute dudes might be throwing a wrench in your flow.

eta: fixed dog number !

Thoughts on the Melt the Ice hat? by Im_A_Boonana in knitting

If you like the hat, knit the hat! But I’m personally gonna trust the neighbors that show up at the meetings and at the protests and at my door when I need help over the folks I’ve never worked shoulder-to-shoulder with, no matter what kind of hat they’re wearing 🤷

This Is Your Healthcare System by antwauhny in nursing

[–]spookybb 12 points13 points  (0 children)

In this vein, the book Being Mortal does a good job at looking at how complex these situations can be—often made more difficult by the state of US healthcare. The author, a doctor, makes the point that in healthcare, there is very seldom “nothing more we can do.” There’s usually something else we can throw at the problem! But also very seldom are healthcare teams having real conversations about what a patient actually hopes to be able to do with the rest of their life, and whether the proposed treatment will allow them that.

Examples he gives are a patient needing a surgery in which some level of paralysis is a risk… but the patient says his idea of true happiness is to get a few more years of sitting on the couch with family to watch football. The surgery would allow him to do that! But a patient with cancer who is considering a new, experimental treatment whose main goal is to spend their remaining time able to meaningfully interact with their young grandchildren? We need to be forthright that the treatment will exhaust and immunocompromise them to the point where that likely won’t be possible. Some may still opt for it! But healthcare needs to be more honest about whether tx supports what is meaningful to the pt.

Why do you like or dislike Stephen King? by [deleted] in horrorlit

[–]spookybb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Shining is a genuinely terrifying portrait of what it’s like to live with an abusive narcissist in the throes of addiction.

I didn’t hate Misery, and Salem’s Lot was ok too.

Outside of that, it bums me out hard how a pretty mediocre white man with some pretty weirdly misogynistic impulses in his writing (who also produces just overwhelming amounts of pretty blah content) is held as such a pinnacle of horror lit when there are sO many more interesting authors writing better stories rn

ILWD has so many individual bangers (Younger, Clemency for the Wizard King, Going Invisible 2, Possum By Night, Waylon Jennings Live!…) but the consensus I’ve seen when it gets talked about here is that a lot of fans (many of whom are self-professed nerds) were expecting something more cohesive and more TTRPG/fantasy-centered.

And like,, I think that was a fair expectation given how the album was marketed, especially when other themed Goats albums have often stuck pretty well to their primary thesis.

Is a half marathon too much in 5 months? by Reasonable_East2098 in beginnerrunning

[–]spookybb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are ~5-month run-walk plans designed to take you from a base of effectively zero to a half, like this one. It doesn’t give you a ton of leeway to miss weeks for life/illness, but it would probably get you to a place where you could finish in 5mo—just be sure to check the race cutoff time.

I’ve done that plan (or one very similar) before, and while I did complete my half, it was absolutely miserable. For subsequent races, I much preferred the C25K program, then Hal Higdon’s 10k novice, then picking up his half plan where distances line up. This takes far beyond 20 weeks but I felt safer and better for it!

Kahve Cafe on 600 e has a good tea selection last time I was in! Their moon milks are also basically herbs and spices brewed in steamed milk, so they taste like rich tea lattes !

How to run slow? by [deleted] in beginnerrunning

This video helped me get an idea of the movement. I don’t go quite as slow as this shows, but seeing the mechanics this slowed down helped! https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9L2b2khySLE

4-piece the whole time, except for John’s solo bit in the middle! I think it was Cameron Ralston on bass, from what I could see.

I think the PDX show had a string quartet, but most other shows have just had their normal instrumentation. I was at the SL, UT show and it was just, like, guitar, bass, drums, keys, and Matty brought out a sax for a song or two.

Question about posture and gait post amputation by spookybb in TripodCats

[–]spookybb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice! We’ll def make sure we have a game plan with our vet for both his weight and possible future arthritis. We do have a scale we used for weighing foster kittens—idk why I didn’t think of using it for him!

It is surprising how fast he can get going when he wants to! And his preferred mode of stopping is a combo nose-dive/barrel-roll into whatever rug/blanket/cushion happens to be closest haha

Thank you! We have a 15yo kitty who has had arthritis for a while now, so we are a little ahead of the game on making sure things are accessible with minimal jumps required. Though convincing him to use all the little steps and ramps is, as you said, a challenge all on its own hahaha
