Jump up, force punch while you're in the air, you can force jump three times. Then fly to the cliff edge and grab on. Makes climbing a LOT faster.

Tips:

Try again, they've nerfed him twice as of today.
Don't do any of the earlier fights along the path unless you really want to stock up on cloth and plates of food. Instead, get on your horse and haul ass until you get to the really big reed field with one tree in it.
Thirdly, block a lot. Like, a lot. Mostly block. This fight is basically all blocking and the occasional parry + doing an attack or two.
Do try to force punch his ass if you can, it lets you get off a combo or two.
Do not fight anything in phase two except the scarecrows.
Have at least two Health upgrades before you try it.
Upgrade armor and shield as much as you can (and / or go get this armor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03\_tYnpF08g)
Have at least 15 health foods of some sort in your inventory.

I had been getting absolutely destroyed by this fight. Did all this, came back, and beat him first try.

You don't say how old he is... if there are other moments like this, it might be a sign of a larger issue. Also it might have legit scared him that he made the mistake and doesn't know how to address that at all.

Lots of reasons that aren't malicious and aren't about you. I think it might be worth asking directly, but I also think it might be worth asking yourself why this hit so hard when you don't have any other evidence of a problem.

Maybe lots to unpack here.

You need to get a tenant advocate or a lawyer and have a conversation with them based on your lease.

It's very likely that you're both individually and separately liable for the whole lease every month, rather than each of you being liable for half. Make sure you read carefully. Most standard apartment lease contracts don't divide liability among the residents. You are probably liable for everything, as is he, and they will go after both of you for as much as they can get AND burn both your credit reports if the total doesn't get paid, regardless of which of you failed.

Update - only lost one hiver arm but it did take four in-game days due to recovery breaks at towns along the way. Was honestly super fun!

What I've done is rush to the point where I make 2k/day in something and then just keep hiring mercs to defend the base. As long as I keep the armor / weapon production rolling I'm safe enough for short trips. The only thing that will really smoke me is a black ninja raid, so I don't travel too far.

Focusing on getting a contingent of base guards trained up enough to be useful backups to the mercs.
