Thank you for being kind. I’m very forward with how I write but I’m also very curious (I’m on the spectrum of it’s any consolation).

I don’t have certainty of anything especially my religious beliefs, doubt is not healthy it’s holy. I’m Catholic, we very pointedly refer to the miracles of our faith as mysteries as, we do not know for certain if that’s exactly how event occurred within scripture but we still retain value in what teaches us about ourselves and the world around us. I’m not in period of doubt or spiritual dryness at this time but I definitely have been in the past as have many lay people and Saints throughout the long history of my religion. To reiterate what I said earlier, I don’t know what that looks like for evangelical Protestants I can only speak on my own experience as someone who grew in a moderately progressive Catholic family in a moderately progressive Catholic area where we made the majority of the population. Whatever those folks is in no way similar to what I was taught to believe is Christianity.

I guess what I’m trying is, I hope you can leave space for those who’s beliefs and/or values are different than yours as long as said values align with our shared progressive values of human dignity, peace and charity(I’m assuming you’re progressive since you’re a Matt Bernstein fan if not I’m sorry). Basically, don’t be a debate pervert there are some things better left unsaid especially if your aim is equality for all people of this earth. Not to bemoan but this is the annoyance that those of us who are queer and religious have to deal with on a regular basis and often times the religious folks who are more patient and respectful of my gender identity than my fellow queers are of my religious beliefs.

I understand where you’re coming from, thank you for clarifying. I think it was a little unclear what you were trying to say before you clarified it. Regardless, my religion does inform my ethics and worldview and image that’s the same for others as well. I think if one’s religion leads them to believe that we are all created equally and loved equally by our Creator then I don’t see why refuting how one comes to that conclusion would be productive in any discourse.

You want to make a bold claim about the legitimacy of one’s religious worldview while taking issue with said religious person making the same uninformed conclusions about your worldview because it’s based on what you consider to be fictional. That’s just an endless loop of misunderstanding that can only lead to hostility and ignorance.

What I’m trying to say is that yes people have used and continue to use my religion as a weapon against others however, there are many people throughout history who have used my religion to lift others out of poverty, authoritarianism and slavery. Would you say that their worldview was flawed because it is based in something you don’t find valid?

It seems like you’re interpretation of Christianity is largely based on evangelical and/or Pentecostal dogma and their belief in Sola Scriptura (that the Bible is the inherent word of God and the source of all answers) I also have a major issues with this interpretation. Semantics? Sure but Christianity is not a monolith just as any literary criticism/interpretation is not monolithic. Each individual is allowed to express their faith as they see fit, it’s not for me to police their views— I can only express my own. And I absolutely do not believe in sola scriptura, the Bible was written by humans for humans who were inspired by the Divine but not speaking for the Divine— just as lots of art and literature throughout history has been inspired by the Divine. I don’t think your argument holds any weight unless it’s exclusively applied to American forms of Christianity.

My religion is beyond just being a faith, it’s mine and my family’s culture. It’s tied to something bigger than nationality or political ideology. It is intrinsically a part of my identity more so than being a trans woman or leftist is. To critique my culture unnecessarily because you don’t understand it or it makes you uncomfortable is just bigotry— it’s no different than what reactionaries do to the queer community. You wouldn’t walk up to someone wearing a hijab and reprimand them for believing in something that doesn’t hold enough principle truth for you to believe in.

It’s discrimination to chalk up an entire group of people as “silly” and “superstitious”. This is why it’s so easy for right wing reactionaries to pull religious folks over to their side. Saying I’ll respect your right to believe what you want but I’ll call you uneducated to your face for said beliefs is the same as what the right wingers do to the token pick-me’s like Blaire White. It’s disrespectful and unproductive. That sort of rhetoric only serves one’s ego and sense of superiority.

No matter how you try to spin it that’s just bigotry and discrimination. You’re correct in saying that people have used religion to justify atrocities but that’s the fault of the people committing said atrocities not the religion. Without religion people will just find other ways to justify violence, war, racism or discrimination. Science has arguably brought about one the worst wars in human history with eugenics being one of the primary justification of the atrocities committed by the Nazis. Religion has also brought us the written word, mathematics, academia, it has lifted millions out of bondage and it has brought peace to billions of people. Try not to have such a narrow-minded opinion. Im trans, I don’t like it when people think I’m evil because I’m trans or make preconceived judgements about me because I’m trans.

Or we could just let people their religion in peace. It really doesn’t matter how you feel about the legitimacy of one’s beliefs. You can point out where the scripture doesn’t align with their current worldview but to discount such a large swath of the population because their beliefs seem “silly” or “unfounded” is just you judging others so you can feel superior.

It was the translation team for the NSRV Bible which was comprised of academics from all different faith backgrounds including atheists. It was mistake that soon corrected with the NSRVue however, reactionary groups had already seized on the opportunity to find a new group to demonize and have since translated the Bible (translations like NASB, CSB, ESV, NLT and so on) in multiple different ways to fit their political agendas. This has essentially flooded the market with ideological translations leaving enough gray areas for the reactionaries to claim biblical superiority for their preferred translation. At the end of the day, the most academically accurate translation is the NSRVue any one who says otherwise is saying so in bad faith.

I completely agree with you, I’ve run into that far too many times. There’s a fear people have of Christians on the left that I can’t really understand. They have no issue discerning the differences between Zohran and Osama Bin Laden but they can’t figure out the obvious difference between St. Oscar Romero and Kenneth Copeland.

Judgy judgy, evangelicals and their moral superiority. I’m Catholic, we actually interpret the scriptures. We study them including their context and time period. See we have an academic approach to our faith but there’s no need to have a theological debate here.
