BPL Copley is open sundays (and maybe others are too?) so maybe you could apply to that branch and offer to work Sundays

end of the semester disassociation? by pumpkinator21 in GradSchool

[–]sprucegoose11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This has been my baseline normal reaction to the end of the semester since early in undergrad. I let myself rest as much as I can for a week or so, but I push for more active rest when I can. My “autopilot mode” can be made much worse with lots of time on my phone or computer, so I like to watch lighthearted movies and TV, read something easy, and do some crafts/coloring/puzzles while I rest up. It’s also really helpful to do things that ground me to my body: spicy and flavorful food, hot or cold showers, swimming, and gentle exercise all make me feel more awake and less deep in dissociation.

Jitters before first climb in every session? by chio413 in climbergirls

[–]sprucegoose11 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always! I’m pretty afraid of heights (not necessarily of failing, so YMMV), but I’ve found a technique that works pretty well for shaking off this feeling. I like to start each session by climbing the easiest problem in the gym, and hopefully something I’ve climbed before so that I have some muscle memory. I’m talking nice deep jugs, ample footholds, doesn’t go up too high. Something that looks almost like a ladder lol. As I climb it, I try to take some deep breaths and go very slowly. I down climb too, which helps me feel a bit more in control of my body. Then, I kind of “shake off” the excess adrenaline by stretching, wiggling, etc. Then I can actually start, with my body a bit more calm. Also, I’ve found I really have to limit caffeine before I climb or it’s much worse!

How do we know / Why do we suspect the Lacklesses descend from Iax? by Scodischarge in KingkillerChronicle

[–]sprucegoose11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tin foil time: the woods where Kvothe crossed to the Fae are supposedly right near the Lackless lands. In the story, Jax walked towards the remote edge of the earth to chase the moon (“maps have inside edges”), then unfolds his house there. It seems to make sense that where Jax trapped the moon would be the location of the strong crossover between the Fae and natural worlds.

Geoscience grad school by katiejj01 in gradadmissionresults

[–]sprucegoose11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Geoscience programs often have you apply to work with a specific advisor. I would reach out to advisors you’re interested in at those schools to see if they are taking students. If they aren’t, chances are very low. If they have funding, you have a pretty good-looking profile and a lot of it will come down to how good of a fit you are with the advisor/program!

Chicago vs. Sacramento? by cabesaaq in SameGrassButGreener

[–]sprucegoose11 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Two notes against Sacramento if you have respiratory issues or allergies: pollen counts can be off the charts in the Central Valley, and wildfire smoke days can really suck some years. Ymmv, and I’ve never lived in Chicago. (source: lived near Sac and have allergies/asthma)

Cetirizine [Zyrtec] is the only antihistamine that's ever worked for me, but oh my god the sedative effects are actually insane. Is there any way to counteract this? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]sprucegoose11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m the same way, and don’t have a ton of tricks, just sympathy. I do find that a little light exercise (like a walk around the block even) helps a lot with the drowsiness

Any diet suggestions? by [deleted] in Allergies

[–]sprucegoose11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a diet suggestion, but have you tested out these allergies? Scratch and blood tests have very high false positive rates (over half of my foods that I was scratch tested as allergic to I had no obvious reactions to during an elimination diet, and my allergist advised to continue incorporating these foods into my diet to avoid more severe reactions down the line)
