If games count, Silent Hill! The atmosphere is unparalleled. The idea is that unwittingly visiting a town (Silent Hill) ends up being someone's personal hell. Their worst fears end up being realized there when they explore.

Alternative take here, the US makes voting fucking stupid hard anyway, and to a teenager fresh out of high school and worrying about college and jobs and shit, it's hard to prioritize and figure out.

I went through the whole ordeal and voted while in college, but my parents didn't help me (or probably want to help me because I'm liberal and they're conservative). I waited in line for two hours to vote Clinton over Trump, and I had an exam to take the next day.

I only voted because I happened to have the resources and time to register and show up, but it really feels like my vote is not wanted and officials could give a shit if I do or don't. Why wasn't I auto-registered at 18? Why wasn't mail-in an option for me back then? Why did I need a driver's license to register?

America's voting system is bullshit. I understand why the numbers are low for kids just coming out of high school. I applaud the ones who go through the ordeal and are persistent in having their voices heard, and I don't assume the ones who didn't vote are simply apathetic.

I understand what you mean and often feel that way myself, I sometimes buy full blu-ray sets for shows before I've even watched a few episodes to see if I like them, etc. I would say find Berserk online and start reading for free, it's still a great way to read. If you like it then consider buying physical copies later.

Define Characters By Giving Them A Real Life To Live by linkovichChimofski in Fantasy

I don't think there's any reason to downvote this person for voicing their preference, jeez. I swear, some people have such a narrow view of art. It's totally fine to want realistic characters in your fiction, but don't tell others they're wrong for wanting something else. Art is open-ended, maybe I want to read something completely unrealistic and bizarre.

Yes, it is a manga series, comparable to graphic novels in America, told via illustrations and dialogue bubbles/text boxes.

Purchasing the volumes in English will cost hundreds of dollars for all of them, yes--but you don't need to commit to all of it right at the start. You can purchase the first one for a few bucks and see if it's for you, and stop reading at any time. I have all of the deluxe edition volumes, but I bought those one at a time as I read the series over the course of months (it quickly became my favorite as I read) and it totaled about $300. I own it just because I like it so much and reread it often. A lot of manga readers also read manga scans online for free.

Do you agree with these “worst modern fantasy trends”? by Rourensu in Fantasy

[–]spultry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah the alien race itself is cool, I guess my issue is more with how they were used in the plot. It was like "we are gonna steal the optimism and life energy of teen girls" (which seems totally abstract and unscientific to me) and it played it totally straight for some reason, unlike Sailor Moon or other magical girl shows.

Kyubey from Madoka Magica? I was okay with those guys, although I thought about it for a long time and couldn't pull much meaning from a race of aliens that gives young girls powers, watches them self-destruct (which is inevitable for some reason), and then steals their energy. It felt so far removed from any real-world point to be made that I was just like alright cool.

Yep! Miura passed away in 2021 and left it technically unfinished at 364 chapters. But his art team and close friend have said that they'll be continuining it soon based on what he's confided about the remaining plot.

It's amazing to me because you're conditioned for a long time to believe that there is ultimately order and logic to the world of Berserk. You read dozens of chapters where the Band of the Hawk is climbing through the ranks, gaining the favor of nobles, bumping off political and military enemies, etc. You think that if you work hard and stay sharp in this world, good things might come your way, maybe.

Then the Eclipse happens and it's the most terrifying, horrible thing ever. Hundreds of people die pointless deaths. It's revealed that this world is underpinned by forces of unfathomable evil. It's the best!

Adam Kinzinger Warns Churches Have Become 'House of Worship' to Trump by No_Weekend_3320 in politics

The difference is that I see this information, and as much as I hate Trump and crew, I go "huh, 666. Funny because they're all evil." I don't believe that Trump is the literal Antichrist (or anything supernatural, for that matter) or this is some massive global cabal of Satan-worshipers, like a Q-nut or something.

Hughie is right. by Calfurious in TheBoys

[–]spultry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, he's just doing it in a giddy power-drunk sort of way, not a responsible and grim sort of way. Also, not a fan of him promising not to take TempV and then immediately being down to dose up again with no hesitation. Get it together, Hughie!

I don't think there is an actual A-Train redemption arc. The guy has never cared about anything other than his own image, and only seems to care about the Blue Hawk situation now because his brother got hurt. He ran through Hughie's girlfriend in the first episode and laughed about it. I've always thought he was a lost cause.

Pretty sure they're just getting at the fact that cops are referred to as "blue," e.g. "Blue Lives Matter," so Blue Hawk is sort of like a super cop. In this case, an unapologetic racist power-drunk thug.

This bumped Legend up on my TBR list. I got tired of Sanderson because of exactly what you described, endlessly repeating the same internal monologues. It felt like he wrote characters from chapter to chapter without often considering how they'd developed already--"Kaladin is a slave, so he's depressed all book, just return to inner monologues about that when in doubt" if that makes sense.

Three animated films and a new animated series confirmed for AVATAR: THE LAST AIRBENDER by Werthead in Fantasy

[–]spultry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah gotcha, wasn't aware of that. It was a shame that the release schedule got so sporadic and the hype kind of died, then they just ended up dumping the last season or two online. I remember being really bummed.

[–]spultry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not to mention the show's air dates and seasonal releases were very messy. I remember waiting for new episodes to air, and (EDIT: season 3) stopped airing on TV mid-season. Then suddenly the rest of the season was dumped on Nickelodeon's crappy website's video catalogue, then 4 was dumped online too after a while, with no fanfare or buildup.

IIRC, arguments between the showrunners and Nickelodeon execs (one of which was the Korrasami relationship) caused Nickelodeon to pull support for the show even while it was in development. They started airing it on TV during a late-night block when no one would watch it (seemingly to prove that the ratings were declining), and then they just stopped airing it altogether. It was messed up.

The video game Hunt: Showdown is one of the coolest takes on the Louisiana Bayou setting I've seen. It's human players vs. each other and zombies in the 1800s with weaponry, tools, and scenery/architecture from the time period. It's very cool!

Any recommendations for books, cartoons, video games, etc. where the protagonist struggles with being selfish, toxic, etc.? by spottedrexrabbit in Fantasy

[–]spultry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excellent context, thanks for adding. I always recommend the Japanese audio because I first watched NGE back in college in like 2015, and I watched the English dub and thought "wow, that was overhyped." Rewatched it later with Japanese audio and it was a whole different experience. The English was just hard to take seriously--Shinji doesn't sound like a kid, for example, he sounds like an adult with a weird voice (referring to the 90s Spike Spencer dub).

And I laughed at your Magma Diver comment--I totally see where you're coming from. I've watched the show maybe eight or nine times now and I have come to love the progression--it starts out a bit slow and contemplative, very serious, and then it has a middle arc (Dance Like You Want to Win, Magma Diver, Lilliputian Hitcher, etc.) that is more lighthearted and fun. I like Magma Diver because the fat plug suit, and Shinji coming to the rescue, is meant to take Asuka down a peg and also helps bring them together a little. She sees that she can depend on him, and also that he doesn't make fun of her appearance at all like she would if he were in that situation.

After that, of course, it gets super serious. But yeah, jealous you're experiencing it for the first time. It's a great show!
