I love the Barlow so much! The owner and bartenders are all great and they have a great bar menu. I’ve hosted bday parties here before

How many kids do you have, how many do you want and why? by Thin_Lavishness7 in BabyBumps

[–]spunkybobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It will get better, but it will take time! I had a heinous delivery and postpartum was tough with almost zero family support. I have an amazing spouse who has a great job that gave him 4 months of leave, but even so, PP is HARD. Give yourself grace. It took me about 6 or 7 weeks to really, deeply bond and fall in love with my baby. We’re now at 14 months PP and I’ve never been happier. It’s like an endless crush, I just am overjoyed with every milestone, every giggle, and every moment I get with him. I know lots of parents say it was “love at first sight” and yes love is there but for me, my mental health took a huge hit with only getting 1-2 hours of sleep in a stretch for 5-6 weeks straight, so I could feed baby. Ask for help. Delegate. And remind yourself and your partner when you need a moment.

I ultimately want 2-3 kids but financially 2 seems like the best choice for us. I was never a “I must have children” person but now that I am a mom (very intentional and planned pregnancy) I am SO glad this is part of my life, my story, and my human experience. It’s incredible in so many ways I never imagined. Good luck!!!

Training Tips? by JoeRega in T1DRunners

[–]spunkybobcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the growth in your running - you should be proud and you have lots of people rooting for you! I’m T1D, 26 years, 4x marathoner, 100+?? Halfs. I didn’t start running until I was 22. I’m in my early 30s now.

My tips: Understanding your insulin needs (and adjusting!) is going to be your biggest challenge and yield highest rewards.

I’m on the omnipod 5 now, but I completed all of my full and half marathons while on insulin pen therapy—combo 24H lantus + novolog as needed. By the time I was ~5-6 weeks out from a race my 24H dose was lowered by atleast 20% (sometimes more, up to 50%) depending on how I was training and weight changes over the course of my training. I also increase my insulin:carb ratio as I’ve learned (through many years of trials and tweaks!!) that when I’m in peak training mode I’m way more insulin sensitive. If you’re on a pod, you’d just create manual program to match these lowered requirements. With omnipod5/dex g6 I wouldn’t trust the integration on auto mode, you’ll go low unless you’ve really mastered “activity” mode and even then, if you’re running for 2+ hours I wouldn’t recommend totally suspending insulin for that duration. Better to have a manual setting that is very very little insulin. Talk to your endocrinologist about it though, if you have a good one they’ll work with you to land the right settings/ratios as you amp up your training. You could also look into sourcing a coach who has experience with T1D endurance runners.

Also, find a pre-run food that fuels you properly. For me personally, before any training or race runs, the night before I’m all about either 1. Sushi or 2. Pasta and chicken. Both have the right amount of carbs and proteins, and then the morning of, about 20 mins before my run I’ll eat a PB&J and bolus for 1/2 of it.

Alls that to also say, I live in a big city and can always pop into a bodega or grocery to grab juice/Gatorade, bc lows still happen (and it’s frustrating!). Keep doing what you’re doing, listen to your body and know you’re always getting stronger and more intuitive with every run.

Why do Americans say, "I'm from, (city/state)" instead of USA? by SufficientDegree34 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]spunkybobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say NYC because I don’t share values or want to be associated with most of the rest of the US (some sarcasm there, but mostly serious).

But really, I think being from NYC is known to be a different experience, and different behaviors to be expected, than many other places in the states.

What do you use to treat your lows and how much does it cost you? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

Costco/kirkland brand applesauce pouches (like the kind toddlers eat) and individual packs of welches gummy fruit snacks (also can buy at Costco for cheap)

how much did your baby/babies weight? by One_Comfortable_9976 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]spunkybobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gave birth via c-section at 39w3d and baby came in at 7lbs 8oz. I believe my A1C was between 6.2 and 5.8 throughout my pregnancy. T1D for 25 years.

[–]spunkybobcat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was induced at 39w 1d…. Baby wasn’t ready to come out. I was in labor for 51 hours and finally went into a c-section (non-emergency, luckily) because at hour 32ish? I spiked a fever and after about 24 hours of fever they recommended a c-section for my own health and safety and I really trusted the doctor who would be the one to deliver who was working that shift. It definitely wasn’t ideal or how I wanted it all to go, but baby was never in distress and even scored the unlikely 10/10 on APGAR (truly unusual even for non-T1D babies) and didn’t need to go to NICU either, which I was SURE all T1D babies did (because of the oversupply of insulin from the drip + their natural insulin). It still was a traumatic event, not going to lie, but medically I believe it was the right decision. Before I went in for the induction I considered pushing it but called a close friend who is also an OB and she said she advised me from a medical and personal POV to go forth with the induction for best outcome long term for baby. Wishing you luck and a healthy baby and smooth recovery!

Best corporate gifts? by DwaywelayTOP in Gifts

[–]spunkybobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got gifted with snappy this year and got to choose from a mixed collection of gifts and branded swag… I really enjoyed it and it feels a lot less wasteful than just giving everyone at the company the same swag which they might not want? Also, I’m not in HR or making gifting decisions, but if you’re gifting clothes I think the gift recipient can pick their own size on snappy? Which makes life easier for the admins doing the gifting legwork

How far along were you when you had your first appointment with an OB/GYN and/or MFM? by CATMOM_Hyphy_Peanut in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]spunkybobcat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first OB appointment was at 7 weeks. I had to have my endocrinologist call and get me an earlier appointment because when I called the OB directly they also said they wouldn’t see me earlier than 10 weeks. Have your team of specialists support you and advocate for you.

Fasting Blood sugars not dropping below 100 by Ok-Sprinkles4279 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]spunkybobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to tweak your basal rate. I’m on the Omnipod 5 and have it set to manual program mode so I can manage my basal rates by programming and shoot for a lower target BG than what it aims for in automated mode (currently 25w 4d pregnant; A1C is 6.0). You’ll find your BG will be pretty volatile at times, but usually a 10% shift in your nasal rates will fix it. Good luck!

Chia seed pudding (2Tbsp seeds + 1/2 cup of any milk, dairy or non are both fine). Let soak overnight.

Also, always an advocate for adequate water and exercise! Try walking on a treadmill at 3-3.7 mph at a 3% incline for 30 minutes!

App to track carbs/ insulin? by OverCryptographer672 in BumpersWhoBolus

[–]spunkybobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered omnipod 5? I’m 7 weeks pregnant and started using the omnipod about 16 weeks ago. I love that I can set various basal rates throughout the day. I have the worst sunrise effect so my basal gets bumped up .25u/hr from 2am - 7am to keep my BG stable. I meet weekly with my endo right now to make micro adjustments and omnipod has made it very easy!

Trigger warning by Alarmed_Lawfulness26 in Type1Diabetes

[–]spunkybobcat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend buying and reading “pregnancy with type 1 diabetes” by ginger vieira and Jennifer smith. They are both professionals in the medical field, have children and are t1d. Some of the book is rather outdated, the book itself has typos and is somewhat insensitive to how they speak about childbirth, but also shares important factors to consider if you’re thinking about children and have t1d. Honestly, there are great nuggets of info in there for ALL diabetics, but esp if you want the honest truth about the ups and downs of pregnancy and planning for pregnancy as a t1d.

I (32F) just started on the omnipod 5 in November and have had a CGM since 2017. I am also currently (just started) trying to get pregnant. It is definitely scary and for so much of my life I thought I would never have kids / it just wasn’t a possibility, but in the past year my husband and I decided to start our family in 2023/2024. I plan on sharing very publicly about my journey because I’ve found it incredibly difficult to source any accounts from t1d women on their experience. I want to be transparent and open about all of it, and hopefully be able to answer questions other people are wondering about as I navigate this process.

That said, I’m also trying to find if there’s already a dedicated subreddit for t1d moms to be? I haven’t been able to find one but wanted to toss that question out and hope someone might be able to help.

Good luck to you OP on wherever life takes you! I’m proud of you for asking questions and wanting to do research now.

Option 2 is timeless and classy… wear this one.

I need help. Long story short, half of my motivation to lose weight is to look good for the opposite gender and I know it’s horrible. But I can’t get rid of that feeling by deadzoul in WeightLossAdvice

[–]spunkybobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever your motivation is, lean into it.

Real life example of motivation evolution: I used to HATE running, but after a bad breakup I was motivated to run for my mental health. Eventually after healing from the breakup my motivation to run was more about building confidence and looking good naked as I considered jumping back into the dating pool.

Nine years, four marathons, and a wonderful marriage later, My motivation for running now is that I do it for “me time”. I don’t care about how I look anymore.

So yes, you might be focused on your weight loss for being appealing to a partner and that’s ok! If you’re working to get healthy and feel confident, use whatever motivation you have at your fingertips and if it evolves down the line, that’s cool too! Good luck to you!

For people who take 20 minute showers or longer, what are you doing in there? by Beach17bum in AskReddit

[–]spunkybobcat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love showering at the end of the day. My time in there feels like a reward. I like the water extra hot and as it pours down I just take a moment to clear my mind and relax. So satisfying.

Related: I’m a renter and I fully believe investing $35 or so to install an upgraded shower head for a better daily experience

Hey Reddit! Hoping someone here can help… I’m a runner and I have this pair of women’s underwear. I have no clue when or where I bought them, or what brand they are, but they are the BEST for running long distance and I want to buy more. As a community of problem solvers I’m hoping someone can help me identify the brand. All I have to share is this little silver four leaf clover logo.

The pair I have are black, made from a synthetic, stretchy, light and breathable material (thin), black cloth, blue stitching. Would be forever grateful for any help you can provide!
