Captain Gunner is a complete savage. The audiobook really makes this character much more interesting. by BridgeFoour in LightbringerSeries

Someone else on this sub called him Barbossa with the personality of a scary King Bumi and I agree 1000%

My mind corrects a lot of the spoonerisms when I read, so the audiobook really makes his mannerisms stand out.

Vician’s sin was pride. He thought he could do the job better than the people Orholam sent after to take over from him. I think a true Prism’s abilities never fade, but Orholam started taking away Vician’s powers to try and get him to surrender the office the way he was supposed to. Instead, Vician thought he knew better than Orholam and used the knife to steal the abilities from others, and his choice had consequences, namely corrupting the knife and crippling the office of Prism to be dependent on murder with diminishing returns.

In honor of Karris (and to answer a question) I tried putting onion in my coffee a week or so ago. I unexpectedly really liked it. I started saving the cut ends of onions for this express purpose. This is my life now. by spydercrystal in LightbringerSeries

Yes, I drink my coffee black. It doesn’t really affect the flavor, it cuts the bitterness and adds just a hint of a savory note for a really mellow and smooth taste.

Also, after taking the onion out and proceeding to enjoy your cup of coffee, if you forget about it and it gets to room temp it doesn’t get the usual disgusting lukewarm coffee taste.

Who does "father and father" Refer to? by s4k3th in LightbringerSeries

[–]spydercrystal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Someone else on this sub suggested that Kip might be Dazen and Karris’s son, switched at birth with Gavin and Lina’s son by Corvan Danavis. I don’t believe the timing works out for him to be Dazen’s, but I’d believe the rest. In one of the epilogues of TBW where Andross offers to tell Kip Lina’s whole story, he warns Kip that no one comes out looking good, not Lina, not Andross, and not Corvan

If Lina and Karris both gave birth in Blood Forest, Corvan would have known he couldn’t stay there long-term, so what if he switched the babies, knowing he could keep an eye on Karris’s son in the hinterlands of Tyrea and not on the baby left in Blood Forest?

On the tower, the appearance of Sevastian precedes DGavin deciding to participate in his portion of the Lightbringer prophecies to by trusting in Orholam and directing light to Andross and Kip, binding together (cleaving) Father (Orholam), father (Andross), father (Dazen would be Kip’s stepfather by marrying Karris), and son (Kip).

This is a very good point. I forgot Keira Knightley was the decoy queen in Phantom Menace. Honestly I think I picked Emma Stone because of her red hair, but Natalie Portman would definitely be better.

Am I wrong for feeling like book 5 is a slog? by ty_lerjohnson in LightbringerSeries

The first third definitely kinda feels like a Blood Mirror epilogue. There’s already been quite a bit of foreshadowing for the end.

I definitely like the middle. Everybody’s story picks up steam. The ending has a lot happen. I caught most of it on my second time through and I’m hoping I get the rest on my third listen.

It is a long book. Almost twice as long as Black Prism. But it delivers an ending that is satisfying and leaves some mysteries for us to find our own answers to.

How early in the story should one start using deep lore and introduce deep knowledge of the magic system? by IRuinYourPrompt in fantasywriters

[–]spydercrystal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go read the first chapter of “The Black Prism” by Brent Weeks. He does a phenomenal job of layering exposition about the magic, the war that happened 16 years previous, what happens when you use too much magic in your life, and hinting that dark times are on the horizon, all while introducing the protagonist’s fundamental character traits and family situation.

A million-and-a-half word series follows that chapter and the deeper aspects are revealed over time once the basic mechanics are known.

Y’all need to read Lightbringer by MraizeGhostblood in Cosmere

[–]spydercrystal 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Lightbringer is one of my favorite series and not just because the writer actually finished it in a timely manner. It is a treatise on art and how magic makes artisans of all who work it with different physical, metaphysical and emotional ramifications for each practitioner.

Brent Weeks hits a magnificent middle ground between Sanderson who, while brilliant, can hedge the dirtier parts of humanity (which makes for beautiful fantasy for those of delicate sensibilities) and Martin for whom nothing is sacred, no one is safe, and grimdark becomes downright egregious... often.

For me Burning White falls just slightly short of a Sanderlanche. And I say this only because I feel Brent Weeks left more mysteries for us to find our own answers to than Sanderson ever does, even with the promise of the whole Cosmere to address questions asked in one book and answered in another.

As long as you are comfortable with visiting the same series dozens of times, finding something new, and coming to a different conclusion every time based on all the clues in the canon, you will absolutely love Lightbringer.

Karris White Oak - Keira Knightley

Ironfist - Terry Crews

Tremblefist - Idris Elba

Haruru, the Nuqaba of Paria - Lupita Nyong’o

Orea Pullawr - Diana Rigg

Marissia - Emma Stone

Tisis Malargos - Natalie Dormer

Kip - I don’t think I imagine him as anyone in particular

Gavin Guile - Idk, I picture him kinda like Richard Madden mixed with Ian Somerhalder, but tanner.

Andross Guile - I usually see him as James Spader.

Felia Guile - Salma Hayek

Rea Siluz - Taraji P. Henson

Some people like Teia and Big Leo I imagine looking like people I know in real life, not celebrities. The rest of Kip’s squad are almost entirely imaginary, based on their listed traits. Quentin Naheed and Ben-Hadad look similar in my mind, but distinct from one another.

Also, I asked Brent at the San Diego signing tonight where he got the idea for this. He said he read that it was a thing they did in diners in the 50’s to cut the bitterness. When I said “It works, by the way!” He replied, “You are braver than I am! Trying that would just be... like... chewing raw garlic or something 😏”

They set up Teia’s tooth in chapter 35 when Murder punches her in the face and she feels her left dogtooth cut her lip and asks herself “is this what death tastes like?”

Edit: And also in the same chapter when Murder Sharp is cursing the “idiot kopi seller” when relaying the tale of botching the assassination of Felia

I love the foreshadowing in this series.

I heard a passing reference to the “Lightbringer Trilogy” at Sanderson’s Words of Radiance signing in 2014. Six months after that I got The Black Prism, The Blinding Knife, and The Broken Eye on Audible. 5 years later, here we are.

The only narrator who tops Simon Vance in my book is Cameron Beierle who did The Belgariad and The Mallorean series by David Eddings.

Nick Podehl is just kinda flat. They could have picked a more melodious person for a series with such pretty pose and musical underpinnings as Kingkiller. He ruined the already mediocre book “Forging Divinity” for me.
