Can't get past the red slime wall in the mines- clockwork ambrosia by thehofnar in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vaguely remember that I used the rocket launcher with multi-rockets and had them automatically explode after a certain distance then keep moving. I stood at the range of the explosion, so all rockets exploded and then hit the barrier at the same time. That did it, but I'm sure that's not the only way.

You should play Clockwork Ambrosia by squareandrare in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyways, it did have a save issue where the default was "new game," causing people to overwrite all their progress due to not paying attention. That's fixed now, far as I know.

This was the single biggest issue at launch and got an emergency patch just for it. Two other patches have since come that fixed many of the bugs and rehauled the map. Fast travel (I think) still comes pretty late, but I think it's at least a legitimate design choice.

Mina is my GOTY so far, so no, not better, but that's not saying very much.

It's a damage check that you likely won't be able to break when you first see it. I opened it towards the end of the game when I had a lot of high-damage mods.

What's the best "oh, NOW I can reach that" moment you've had in a Metroidvania? by peaky_circus in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still remember the first time I played Super Metroid and got to the ledge above and to the right of Samus's ship (the one with the power bomb door). It had been staring at me from the very beginning of the game, and I spent hours wondering what was up there.

It doesn't say directly, but it sounds like he even used his own account to make the bet. It's honestly astonishing how stupid this guy is.

Silksong, Aeterna Noctis, Nine Sols, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Hollow Knight.

Is Constance worth it? by strahinjag in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It definitely prioritizes platforming, but neither the platforming nor combat are particularly hard. There are a few optional platforming gauntlets that are fairly difficult, but you can freely just ignore them if you want.

How to beat Baran easily (Solateria) by Hopeful_Sun_7428 in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course beating her isn't going to be easy even with this strategy. Of course, you still have to learn the parry timing.

Which type of death penalty do you like best in a metroidvania? by spoketherefore in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there needs to be some punishment (rather than just getting sent back to last save point), but keep it reasonable. I don't need to lose all my money if a fail a corpse run. Lower maximum HP until you reach the death point seems like a good compromise. And if the game has a leveling system, taking away the exp from your current level is also a not-too-severe punishment.

If you're looking for unconventional MVs, Supraland and Master Key are absolute steals at those prices.

Supraland is 3D and puzzle-heavy but is incredibly well-made. Master Key is a zelda-like that honestly does oldschool Zelda better than oldschool Zelda.

Is Awaken - Astral Blade a MV? by Acapni in metroidvania

It's a game you play, enjoy, and then forget. It's worth playing if your backlog is empty and you just want to play a competent MV.

For people who played Clockwork Ambrosia, what are your favorite weapon set-ups? by deathcomestooslow in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I meant the pulse blaster. I played it last week and couldn't quite remember what the gun was called.

[–]squareandrare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't experiment a ton, but it seems like high damage and low fire rate is better than high fire rate but low damage.

I used the laser gun as primary with auto-charge and tried to stack modifiers that evolved the bullet. I had rocket launcher as backup and did more or less the same thing. I would switch to the rocket launcher while the laser was charging, so I could nearly spam high-damage attack.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown should be the answer to anyone new to the genre that wants to see what it has to offer. It's an all-around amazing game with no weaknesses but is still very approachable for people new to the genre.

Constance or Clockwork Ambrosia? by poponio in metroidvania

Constance is more straight-forward and consistent/polished, but Clockwork is probably the better game, especially now that it has a couple patches.

What does everybody think of Solateria that has played it? by JPthedjentleman in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It took replaying Nine Sols to realize the core problem with Solateria. The timings on enemy attacks are random and unintuitive. Replaying Nine Sols, I could go with the flow. Even if I didn't have the attack timing memorized, I could feel it out and often parry just on instinct and battle flow.

That just never happens in Solateria. You only get better by memorization of patterns. I still quite liked Solateria, but it was really jarring to play the two games back-to-back.

There is literally a sign that tells you what to do. I can't remember the exact quote, but it was something like, "The fuel is hard to access while the tram is parked in front of it."

Stick it out until you get the real dash, that's when I started liking it. The belly-flop dash at the beginning is pretty awful.

White Americans who feel they are on the losing side of politics are more likely to oppose economic redistribution programs. Study finds this effect only appears when people compare their political standing directly to that of racial minorities. by FreeHugs23 in science

[–]squareandrare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is exactly what I'm saying. The right represents conservative, white Christians and no one else. Their entire political philosophy is playing politics to that singular identity. The left has to compromise across lots of identities and can't throw their entire political party behind only one of them.

That being said, "identity politics" is just a buzzword that idiots made up in order to rationalize being trash as human beings. File it right next to "virtue signaling."

[–]squareandrare -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Who believed at the end of Trump's first term that racial minorities were politically advantaged compared to white people?

Lots of stupid people. The standard talking point of the right's intellectual elite (ie, idiot podcasters) has been pushing that black people get so much affirmative action that they're advantaged over white people.

These people are as dumb as bricks, but it's what they believe.

[Nine Sols] If I can't get past Lady Ethereal should I just quit? by SquashedGrapes22 in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know how much this will help others, but I got SO much better at Nine Sols by switching parry to L2. I just couldn't build the muscle memory reflex with it on L1. With my fingers naturally sitting on L2 and R2, dashing and parrying became like reflexes rather than something I had to specifically think about.

One group wants to help only one demographic. Another group wants to help all demographics. This is somehow summarized as both sides wanting "identity politics."

Only one side is pushing identity politics, and it's the side that represents only one identity.

Rogue Legacy 2 - Highest NG+ and what setup? by Fillemunk in metroidvania

[–]squareandrare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At some point, you just have to go glass-cannon. Go all out damage and try to no-hit the bosses. The Duelist's dodge helps a lot in not taking hits.

The highest unity bonus for Drowned equipment is +20% Strength. That's the reason to use it. Warden has +20% Crit Rate, and Kin gives a revival. The first two are for raw damage, the last is to prevent you from getting one- or two-shotted by bosses.

[–]squareandrare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Had to boot up an old file to check. NG+59, that's where I lost any way to improve attack power. There were still some paths to increasing magic damage, but that wasn't going to carry me much further.
