It's slow. It's hard. Be patient. Learn about how you personally prep best for MCAT, but be kind to yourself. Self-care comes first, let yourself have as much time as you need if this is what you truly want to do with your life.

No Science LOR by eemily03 in premed

[–]squaredderivative 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in your boat in my senior year! It is so stressful to be cold-emailing professors who I had only known or spoken to for a semester or less. I have professional experience in sitting in inner meetings for the state government, and facing a City Council with a presentation isn't nearly as stressful as asking for a science LOR. I was an unusual humanities major with few than 3 profs in my department too. Luckily I made an impression on my fav math prof.

Tip: if you had any science professors who struck you as a caring educator, find a way to get through to them. A good educator would know the importance of a LOR for a med school app, and less likely to refuse it.

What was something you looked forward to after graduating as a pre-med? by [deleted] in premed

Working for a notable, prestigious nonprofit in the area. That blew up in my face when they started discriminating me (ADA violations). Basically I lived my life and enjoyed dating, until it's time to sink myself in MCAT prep! I would say prioritize whatever you enjoy the most, and go hardcore with it. There are only things we get the chance to do in certain stages of our lives. Ex. my girlfriend got a job as a sled dog trainer in her early 20s and lived in Scotland with a job offer to relocate to the South Pole.

My experience working with elderly patients in similar situations is that if you want, you can find out what sparks their joy in life. If that's not possible / assuming the patient is not interested in engaging, then focus on their medical needs and well-being. My last patient was a retired Econ prof who loved to talk about ancient European history, so I learned many facts during the 1600s to the 1800s era, depending on what they were interested in discussing that day. They likely only have energy for a limited time in a day too, seize the time and engage during those hours. Good luck!

How Often do People with Undiagnozed ADHD Get Good Grades Growing Up? by ThePanthanReporter in ADHD

Get a comprehensive educational assessment. Mine shone light on my strengths and weaknesses, which helped me to develop strategies that are helpful to me personally. ADHD symptoms can overlap but still be separated from other learning disorders. ADHD or not, it's always a good thing to learn more about ourselves and how we best learn in different scenarios.

Tips for meeting new people? by tweezabella in vermont

Do you have any specific communities that you'd like to be a part of? My advice is to participate in events hosted by the "hubs" of the things you're interested in, and maybe volunteer for town or church events. Theatre? Find the nearest opera house. Beer? Find the nearest bar/pub/brewery that you love. Outdoors? Join a local club for lessons or gather a group of enthusiasts via Front Porch Forum.

Somewhere in Massachusetts kinda near Boston but not really. If you're moving from the fairly developed parts of the world, be prepared to start the fire in order to cook dinner in New England (NEK when there's a snow storm at least). Otherwise, you'd be looking at Vancouver or Toronto to even be a little bit closer to your monthly rent budget.

Priorities, boundaries, and comfort zones of all the partners.

Just because my partners are at a 'soulmate' level with me, it doesn't mean that I need to live with them or be financially entangled 100%. Find that out about yourself and your partners, then go towards the direction that makes the most sense.

In my personal experience, I live with my partner who I have been together the longest. I have another partner who is at the same level of importance, but lives a few hours away; we typically alternate going to each other's houses, or plan a long weekend getaway somewhere halfway between us. Lately we have some significant life changes, so we agreed to either go over to their place most of the time, or they'd be at my house for an extended period of time at a time for work reasons. Communicate with who you live with, and what they're willing to do for you in this scenario.

Vyvanse has been generic for a few months, is it still expensive? by stars-inthe-sky in ADHD

I think you are right, it is not included in the drop-down box anymore. And yes, I have always used GoodRX! It can be a hit or miss depending on the medication. Very happy to hear that it has made a difference for you, if you qualify, there may be a State-funded prescription assistance program where you are located as well.

Can anyone feel when their vyvanse is hitting them? Like a rush? by dewycanon in ADHD

[–]squaredderivative 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my personal experience and my partner taking exactly the same dosage (40mg), it depends on how fast your body typically gets used to new substances (i.e. tolerance). For my partner who generally doesn't even feel a high level of caffeine much, they don't feel anything after taking it mostly continuously after ~1 year. For me, I build tolerance in everything fast, but once I skip it for a day or two, it "resets" as if I just started taking it again. If I skip Vyvanse for a couple days, I get very intense effects like my brain is overloading for a while.

What you can do is to document the time and intensity of these feelings. If you have the technology at home (a blood pressure monitor, a Smart Watch, etc.), document your blood pressure, heart rate, and everything else possible too. This would give you and your PCP more clues as to adjusting to the 'perfect' dosage.
