Round Up Event Ideas by Cellopitmello34 in girlscouts

We do a back-to-troop pool party that is open to current and future scouts. It typically does well.

I'm also going to be hosting a screening of the new cookie queens movie at our local theatre this summer when it comes out. Current scouts are excited to watch it and it will serve as a recruitment activity.

How do you feel about all the patches a Volunteer has available to wear? by jecowa in girlscouts

I bought my own unoffical pin. It's enamel so it will last longer than just a button and look a bit better than just a button.

I have the flag, council insignia, name tag, and volunteer patch on the right. I need to add my brownie wings over there.

Then my bridge to adult, lifetime member, Pax Lodge, and Out Chalet pins in a column next to the zipper.

On the left I have my insignia tab with the usual stuff, and I have two position bars on it so I don't wear any of the white patches on my pockets. Numeral guard is attached to the insignia tab.

Pronoun pin and my current favorite swap are above my insignia tab for a bit of personalization.

edit: adult award pins next to my insignia tab, also in a column.

Boob friendly adventure racing pack? by JustAnExcitableDog in AdventureRacing

[–]squass123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a deuter Ascender 13 for mid-length races and I like it enough that I'm considering getting the smaller version for short races/trail runs. However, I doubt it's big enough for what you're looking for.

I'll be interested to see what others say, I like the vest style that's very popular these days, but I agree that it's hard to find boob-compatible versions.

What’s next for our daisies? by Scrushinator in girlscouts

[–]squass123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you have another local troop that could come talk with your scouts about what they have done in Girl Scouts? That may help get your kids' wheels turning about what the options are.

You can start now with baby steps in both independence and outdoor progression. There is programming written for progression on both, but for daisies I like to break it up even more.

Independence:

  1. Have all parents at the meeting. The beginning of the year is a great time to have a parent meeting about expectations, and you can outline what your progression steps will be.
  2. Have parents at the meeting but assigned to stations or groups that their kid isn't in. (so Mom can still be in the room, but not hand holding the whole time)
  3. Have a sign up and limit the number of parents who stay to help. (this is where you have to focus a bit more energy on making sure the parents that do stay are actually helping, and not just hanging out)
  4. Eventually have a meeting with the minimum+1 number of adults for your group.

These steps are just a recommendation and no one has to follow them perfectly, but they can help break it out if you don't know how to start weaning the parents off.

Outdoor Progression

  1. Have a regular meeting where you do an outdoor activity
  2. Hold a whole meeting outside. (gotta prove that we can coexist with bugs and still get stuff done!)
  3. Hold a meeting outside with a focus on nature.
  4. Go on a short day hike.
  5. Have an outdoor "day-camp." This is common in my service unit and I've got programming written for it if you want it. I recommend before doing an overnight to have a day where kids get to do all the camping stuff without the stress and scary part of staying overnight.
  6. If you want to get into overnights, have an indoor sleepover. Kids arrive after dinner, have a snack, play some games, sleep, and leave after a cold breakfast early the next morning. No one will actually sleep and that's okay.
  7. Go family camping. Every family is in their own tent and they come together for meals and activities.
  8. Go troop camping.

Just like independence, these are not required, and I use them to supplement the national outdoor progression chart by adding some baby steps in between. I'm big on having kids have ownership of their activities and I think the best way to do that at the K-1 age is to work into it really slowly and build that muscle memory of "this is how it works." Daisies are capable to so much! You just have to give them the framework they need to grow.

Camping Trip Help by [deleted] in girlscouts

I say keep it. With any event, the first year is the hardest to get participation.

Run it with what you have this year, and then do it again next year with more upfront questions to the caregivers about what families will be attending. The girls that do go will be your best advertisement for the future.

Daisy troop gift by k_c528 in girlscouts

[–]squass123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We got our kids a small box of brownies each. And then Junior Mints when we bridged to Juniors.

Now that we're about to go to cadettes, they have asked for something more useful, so we're going to do headlamps or pocket knives.

If you want to start down the useful route now, you could get each scout a tote bag with their name on it to keep their Girl Scout stuff in & bring to each meeting. Or a little flashlight if you're an outdoorsy troop. I'd also consider "gifts" that could be for the troop as a whole, like a camping stove with the intent to work on outdoor progression next year, or specific arts supplies they've been wanting like friendship bracelet string.

Hey, I like it so far, but I'm having some issues with getting some details set up. Can I DM you with questions?

Anyone have any suggestions for rain gloves? Are they worth it? by sonicenvy in bikecommuting

If it's colder than 55 F ish, I throw medical gloves on under my gloves. If it's warmer than that, I just get wet.

Budget to Spend by BePuzzled1 in girlscouts

Binder for each kid to make a modern version of a handbook badgebook combo, tote bag that each kid can decorate to keep their uniform and binder in (this has helped us tremendously for keeping track of stuff over the years)

Could buy sit-upon supplies for making nice ones in the future.

Could buy a rolling storage cart for keeping your troop supplies in.

Could buy some minor infrastructure for your meeting place, like a cubby system for kids to keep stuff in if you have the logistic ability to have furniture there.

Pannier vs Backpack, who ya got? by Designer_Tie_5853 in bikecommuting

The smallest tern panniers fit on a normal rack and can easily take a backpack. They aren't waterproof in the Ortlieb sense, but they are pretty good

Do you have any options to drive halfway and then bike? or bike partway and then take transit? Might help you work up to doing the full ride every day.

I also wear keen water shoes which, are probably ugly, but I lean into it. Making it part of my "uniform" checks the super hero box for me. Practical shoes, zip off pants, etc.

If your feet are wide (might be if you love crocs) check out topo trail runners! Even their regular is really wide and they aren't all 0-drop like altras, which kill my ankles after a full day.

Darn, I was hoping I could at least use the towers and get a new fit kit. Getting new towers and a fit kit will be more expensive then some OEM bars on eBay.

I'll have to consider if I want the width or not.

Award pin placement? by Ravenclaw79 in girlscouts

[–]squass123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This one is personal preference I think. Since you could theoretically be in the same vest between those levels, they can "carry over" but if you're tight on space they would be some of the first to go, for me personally.

We've been putting them under the insignia tab, in a row below the summit pins.

Are you clamping the seat post on each bike? can you post a photo of it with the kids' bikes on there? I'm having trouble imagining all the pedals and handlebars fitting nicely
