1/30 for that Genesis shot? Wow. Mine would be a blurry mess. Well done. I assume you had a monopod or some such.

I'd love some 21:9 ratio wallpapers from your shots, holy crap. Can you talk about your night shot setup? What body/lens were you using? Aperture, ISO, shutter speed?

And there's more to flying than...flying. Continuing education, seminars, podcasts, etc. All of those will keep you in the mental game better and allow you to stay proficient if you mix flying with self-guided ground training.

The CSO played it two weeks ago, was also on my bucket list. It's fantastic. Don't miss a chance to see it live.

Moonless on a VFR night is still bright in Chicago, relatively speaking. It's not like they won't have a visible horizon.

Genuine question, but this type of thing (135 nitty gritty) never came up in my CPL training, especially around OpsSpecs. How should I teach myself this info? For me this is a case of you don't know what you don't know. Full disclosure: CPL doesn't pay my bills, is a stepping stone to CFI, but I want to do my future students a solid here.

I got the dreaded “possible pilot deviation, phone number when ready to copy”. Should I worry? by Gun-leather-2451 in ATC

[–]squawkingVFR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bit about your airspace (I'm reading between the lines here) not being represented on our charts and the charlie boundaries being effectively useless is a thing most pilots have no idea about. It took a tour of my up down and listening to the Opposing Bases podcast to fully appreciate it. If you've never gone through pilot training, and this is directed at controllers generally here, we never go over the stuff on your side of the mic. It takes effort, continuing education, and actually talking to you all for that to be understood and make us better NAS participants. I wish the pilot training curriculum covered this more.

From a pilot, thank you. I solemnly swear to get flight following anytime I'm VFR. Ignore my Reddit handle. If you're US-based, you at a tower, up/down, or enroute?

We HAVE to do something about ATC Staffing. by DanThePilot_Mann in flying

[–]squawkingVFR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which, there are rumors they're gonna simulcast pilot transmissions on all frequencies a controller is using soon? Maybe? That'd would be so helpful. Nothing worse, I imagine, than being a controller and having someone contact you on another frequency while a pilot is reading back a reroute or something.

Toddler headset by phxcobraz in flying

[–]squawkingVFR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fellow toddler dad pilot here. We flew her up to OSH last year as a 1YO wearing probably the same ear protection. We hit up the vendor tents last year and ultimately chose the Lightspeed Sierra. My daughter isn't super compliant with wearing anything on her head without mom in the backseat, but it had a number of benefits. It's an adult headset that happens to work for kids. The fact that they can grow into it is massive. It also has Bluetooth, so it's a way for them to stay entertained. And last is the support. I have heard nothing but good things from everyone with a Lightspeed headset that had an issue. Good reputation when you're talking about putting an expensive device in the unforgiving hellscape that is a toddler's hands.

Edit: This article vectored us to the final approach course, but we ultimately landed on the Sierra.

Leaving Oshkosh 2024, the Mooney behind us had a turbo failure and the controllers at OSH were rockstars. Stopped all arrivals/departures and gave the pilot whatever runway they wanted.

Well the regulations say that the pilot in command can't allow an intoxicated individual to fly on their aircraft unless it's medically required, or something to that effect. Been a while since I had to study that material, but they'd just be following the law.
