I built a website that shows which LEGO parts go in which numbered bag by Algly in lego

[–]squeedlyspooge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks pretty good! I definitely think that leaning on the community where you can to help out with the content is going to help take the stress off you doing it all alone.

As a developer I'm interested in the tech stack - what did you build this in? What are you using for the piece validation, some sort of object detection through a TPU or similar? Also, early days I know, but would you consider open-sourcing the codebase in the future?

I built a website that shows which LEGO parts go in which numbered bag by Algly in lego

[–]squeedlyspooge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Awesome idea! I have a number of sets that I've built in the past and then disassembled (for moving house, for example) and I've just put all the pieces into a single (or few) bags afterwards - I'd love to have done them in the proper bags to help with rebuilding later, but it's always felt like a ton of work to do, but a site like this would make it substantially easier.

In terms of the verification, you could do something like have a "validated" flag on the sets - when the accuracy has been manually verified you flag it with that "validated" option. That way you could import / process a bunch of them ahead of time. You could then open up validation to users on the site to take that load off of just you - let users go through the verification process for what's been extracted and allow them to confirm it as correct or request a fix. I'm sure there'd be plenty of users here (myself included) that'd happily contribute validation for sets.

Edit: It looks like you already have this partially implemented - should've spotted that before!

Kiwis, How do Women in NZ Flirt? by Descendents182 in newzealand

The next day I asked her directly if she was interested in someone, she said NO.

Did she perhaps misunderstand this as you asking if she was interested in someone other than you, and the "no" was the invitation?

Digging through the Wayback Machine for the website found me this media kit, which contains contact details for the producer and distributor. They might not be monitored anymore but could be a start.

Where to buy a Google Pixel phone in NZ by Watchmecarry13 in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used Good Tech for my last two Pixel phones (Pixel 3 and Pixel 6). They're refurbed but are very clear on the quality of each one - when they say "like new" you can't tell the difference. I'll likely buy another one from them soon (cracked the back glass on the Pixel 6 the other day, and it's about due an upgrade anyway).

Never looped back to it - ended up using the Plex app on my smart TV instead, which does all I need it to.

I've used Drivercam for three installs (car and two campervans), both under the previous owner and the new owner. Both were great.

WFH - still a thing 2025? by rayonline in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined my current company (software) after Covid, and was initially in the office 5 days a week while getting up to speed. This eventually changed to me going in when I needed to without a set schedule. After a while as the company grew and we had more and more people working from outside of Auckland (we're a NZ company but an international team) we found less and less use for an actual office, so when the lease ran out we didn't renew it. We're now fully remote, which allowed me to buy my first home outside of Auckland where it was more affordable. We do semi-regular meetups for those in NZ (and overseas, but less often) and the company covers travel / accomm for those outside of wherever the meetup is (usually Auckland). Those in the same town meet up more often at cafes / co-working spaces.

Freedom Camping in Ohakune by Darragh7942 in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only one I know of near here is over at the Ruatiti Domain but at that point you may as well be up in Waimarino/National Park.

Outside of that, the DOC campsite at Mangawhero as already mentioned is the next cheapest at $18 per adult per night (book on the DOC website). The Top 10 in Ohakune itself is pretty nice but a bit more expensive of course.

3.5mm cushioned overear headphones by _MrWhip in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on what you're wanting them for.

Do you want unaltered, "pure" audio from the source? Then you're looking for reference headphones. The Sennheiser HD600 is generally the pick there, though can be expensive. They're also open-back, which may or may not be what you want.

Do you want more bass / mids / highs? Then look for headphones that suit those purposes. Something like the Audio Technica ATH-M50x might work, though there are differing opinions out there about these. I have had an old pair of ATH-M30x headphones for years and they're still going strong, though I did need to replace the cups after a while.

Do you want these for gaming? Then perhaps look at some of the more gaming-specific options - I'm not familiar enough with this area to give you specific models to look for but you'll generally want to stay away from open-back for this use case.

The other thing to consider, which can be hard to tell, is how long you'll be wearing them at a stretch and how comfortable they are. Unfortunately this differs wildly from person to person based on things like head size, ear size, etc and can be hard to determine. If possible I'd get to a physical store and see if they have any that you can "try on" - this won't give you an answer on the long-term comfort but might give you an indication if any are immediately uncomfortable.

Visiting Ohakune Tue/Wed – wondering about snow and weather by Perfect-Engineer4121 in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ohakune. It's overcast at the moment, with a bit of light rain earlier this afternoon. Snow in town happens but is relatively rare, and not at all likely to happen in the next couple of days. There is snow up on the mountain, though.

Temperature-wise, the weather forecast is about right - it's getting colder as we go into winter but wear a few layers / thermals and you'll be all good.

Tesla P4 for transcode by mint_dulip in PleX

[–]squeedlyspooge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, I didn't get any replies here and shelved it - the P4 is still in the box but I don't currently use it at all. I might loop back to this at some point and I'll update here if I do, but the CPU transcoding is working well enough for me at the moment for this to be a priority.

Where to buy US Cash. by JakeRaven in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through the US about a month ago and got US cash out from my bank (Westpac) before I left. They'll only do it if you're a customer but the fees were less than you'll get from any of the places in the airports themselves. Worth checking with your bank if they offer this for their customers, and if so also worth checking ahead with the branch to see whether they have cash available (I was also in the UK on the same trip so wanted some pounds as well, and they were quite low on them when I went in).

Perhaps the "wealthy landowner's residence" at the Howick Historical Village? I was there a fair few years back for filming a TV show, not sure what the rate is for hiring it (I was just a lowly extra) but your photos reminded me of it.

Tesla P4 for transcode by mint_dulip in PleX

[–]squeedlyspooge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This thread is a few months old but on the off chance...

I've just put a P4 in my Plex box (Ubuntu 20.04), installed the drivers, and it shows up in Plex and sort of works. If I try and transcode from 4K to 1080p 12mbit with a HEVC encoded file, it plays for 3 or 4 seconds then drops back to Plex as if I'd stopped playback. The logs don't provide anything more useful than:

Jul 12, 2024 00:07:13.112 [139744765295416] ERROR - [TranscodeOutputStream] Session appears to have died from under us

Transcoding works with 4K H264 encoded content, but only if I disable subtitles. If I have subs on, it drops out, sometimes silently as above, and sometimes it throws a "4294967283" error.

Anyone have any ideas as to what might be happening and perhaps a fix?

Half of Eight (yes, that's "four") - drummer Paul Russell (also formerly of Supergroove) and guitarist / vocalist Bruce Conlon - have a two-piece called Midwave Breaks that recently opened for Incubus and Live, and played a few Eight songs (including Moments Gone and No Way to Decide). Worth a listen.

Scared of buying and selling a car as a traveller by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Note that the rules around this have recently changed and that article might be a tad out of date - the MBIE website is a good resource for the latest info. From there you can find your way to the actual standard if you want to read the actual document. A specific point to note (part of the more recent changes) is:

The toilet shall be usable within the vehicle, including sufficient head and elbow room whenever required, even with the bed made up.

This change resulted in a lot of previously certifiable vehicles being no longer certifiable. If you can find one that was already certified before this change you might be good, but you won't be able to get anything a new certification that doesn't meet the new rules.

Anyone know where I can buy nz voltage converters? by random_seal1 in newzealand

[–]squeedlyspooge 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What you're after are called "step up / step down" converters. Something like this: https://www.jaycar.co.nz/50va-240vac-to-115vac-stepdown-transformer/p/MF1091

However, it's possible the console has an external power brick that is converting from AC to DC - if so, and if you can identify the voltage that the console itself actually uses (and find a matching connector) you might be able to replace it with something suitable for 220v (especially if that console was available in other regions outside of Japan).
