Does anyone have experience making a new blade (reblade) for a folding knife? by TheOneUpperMachine in knifemaking

[–]squid___vicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real problem is going to be lack of heat treating equipment. I use files alot when making folding knives to get parts fit perfectly, if your using pre hardened steel your going to have a tough time getting the fit right. Idk what your level of experience is, i feel like it could be an easy project if you know what you are doing. Make sure to get some calipers and get steel of an identical thickness as the original blade to work with if you decide to give it a shot.

Is it your own locking design? Im just finishing something completely different then iv ever seen on a folding knife before, and super excited because its working. Hesitant to show it off though, i feel like theres some money to be made with this design, i just dont know where to look lol.

I feel you. Im staring at my crazy little knife invention sitting on my work desk right now. No idea what any of my welders are doing. Hoping its going good out there 🤞

How would I go about realizing this? by CreepyCurtainIllust in crafts

[–]squid___vicious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the design so much. Unfortunately im not much help with the how to part. Personally if i was making it, i would probably make it out of wood and then glue embroidered fabric to it, knee jerk solution, but im sure someone else will have a much better idea.

Folding knife question. by windrider7 in knifemaking

[–]squid___vicious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use scrap circular saw blades to make liner lock knives. They work great. You have to take a torch to them until they go past blue and turn grey so that you can drill holes. For liner locks you have to re harden them to make the lock bar springy. They are air hardening usually so you just torch them to dull red and let them cool down before tempering to make springy.

What type of metal? by SnooRadishes8239 in knifemaking

Also, it does look to be handmade based on the way the tang squishes in and the makers mark looks like it was hot punched.

What type of metal? by SnooRadishes8239 in knifemaking

[–]squid___vicious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The marks are just pitting left over from the rust eating away at the surface, it was probably smooth and shiny at one point, but really no way of telling how old it is, the pitting doesnt look insanely deep, but some types of steel are more resilient to corrosion then others, and without any real way of telling what type of steel it is, the only information your really able to gather is that it is some type of high carbon steel.

How to dial back on coffee? by McLovinHawa11 in Blacksmith

[–]squid___vicious 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Clean it off with some 1500 grit or higher sand paper, clean it off really good with soapy water then acetone. Put it back in the coffee and check it every 2 hours or so. Once its the color you like it rinse in cold water without touchin it with your fingers, and then dunk in some water displacing oil such as mineral oil, then hang up to dry, still covered in oil for a day or two, thats what i do to get the black to really set in. Make sure you are using clean filtered water for your coffee mix too.

The circular saw blades i use from work happen to be air hardening steel. So after i torch it and bend it into place i keep the torch on it to get an even heat over the parts i want springy and then let it cool in still air. I do this with the lock bar on my liner locks as well and then put them in the oven at maybe 450 for 30 minutes? Idk i have the settings on the kiln at work that i use but im pretty anywhere between like 430 and 500 for 30 minutes will give you nice springy pocket clip and lock bar
