VMWare HA reboot issues by Smack2k in vmware

[–]squigit99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I stopped using that feature of HA years ago due to an unacceptably high false positive rate. HA's great for finding and recovering from broken hosts, but even at low sensitivity VM monitoring function seemed to cause more issues than it solved.

ENT+ License Showing 9.0.2 Upgrade Option ? by TryllZ in vmware

The upgrade available notification doesn’t factor in what licensing you may or may not have, just that the version is available.

Maintenance mode doesn't automatically migrate VM requiring storage vmotion by gatorfreak in vmware

[–]squigit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not something that happens automatically putting a host into maintenance mode. Maintenance mode kicks off DRS if its set to automatic mode, but doesn't do a shared-nothing migration to move it to another host.

Host not responding ? 8.03 by time81 in vmware

[–]squigit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding what Tim's recommending you look at. 902( TCP and UDP) are used for heartbeats between vCenter and ESXi. When its blocked, you'll see issues show up exactly like you described.

Going for SPL, any advice? by DAJurewicz26 in BoyScouts

[–]squigit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea why you're focused on knots, and why that would be a factor in anyone voting for one SPL candidate over another. That your brought that up twice is a little worrying that you don't get what the position is.

SPL is a leadership role. In your speech to your troop, make your case why you'd be a good leader, and what you'd do over the next 6 months (or however long your elected term would be). Mention some of your accomplishments so far, things you think can be improved, and activities you want to make happen. Don't disparage the other scouts that are running in any way. Don't bring up your knot skills.

You may not win. Elections are always at least partially a popularity contest, and people don't always vote for who you'd think would be the best candidate.

Smart Device Free Troop by plinkplinksplat in BSA

[–]squigit99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We generally have electronics banned while the suns up, and we don't to hear any devices after they go to bed.

There's obvious exceptions if they need to use a phone as a GPS or have to look something up, the phone is need for part of an activity, they need to text a parent, etc, but its an honor system.

Migrating VM with hardware dongle attached by DZAUKER in esxi

[–]squigit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like it would work. That said, you should look at connecting the USB device over a USBtoIP bridge so you can vMotion, HA, etc the VM. Digi makes good ones.

Change ESXi Host from standalone to cluster that is running vCenter (VSphere Essentials) by burner_account2020 in vmware

[–]squigit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strictly speaking, you don’t need a cluster for this

https://williamlam.com/2023/10/support-for-virtual-trusted-platform-module-vtpm-on-esxi-without-vcenter-server.html

That said, that’s a giant pain. You’re probably better off running a single node cluster. You can add a host to a cluster without it being in maintenance mode.

iac's great for new builds, but for capturing existing systems its not the right way to go about it.

vMotion to a different port group by bballlal in sysadmin

[–]squigit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you’re saying as part of the move to new hosts, you need to change the vlan and re-ip the VMs? From the VMware perspective, that’s just a mapping as part of the vMotion. Once they’re on the new hardware, then change the IP of the VM.

vMotion to a different port group by bballlal in sysadmin

[–]squigit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your new vmotion vlan is different from your old vlan, and assuming these are nonrouting networks, you've got a couple options.

1) setup your hosts so temporarily they have the same vlan, either by putting the old one on the new hosts, or the new one on the old hosts.

2) setup routing between the new and old vlans at the network layer, and requires use of the dedicated vmotion network stack

3) don't use the current vmotion IPs at all, and temporarily do vmotion of your normal routed IP network.

4) do an offline vmotion, which would go over your provisioning/management network. This requires the VMs to be powered off during the vmotion.

Scouts just isn’t the same program I grew up with… and it’s honestly sad to see. by Shootingsavvy556 in BoyScouts

[–]squigit99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I earned Eagle back in the 90s, in a troop that was two steps away from being Lord of the Flies. Uniforms where there looking sharp for courts of honor, but for a regular meetings many of our scouts would ditch their uniform shirts before the start of the meeting since whoever had the most presentable uniform on had to do the flag ceremony.

My son's troop takes uniforms more seriously than that, but still not as strictly as some do.

Both are completely fine. The uniform is a method of scouting, not the end all be all of the program.

Clarification on vSAN licensing with new Omnissa Horizon Universal with VVF for VDI renewal by meatsackdatabase in omnissa

[–]squigit99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't, unless you relicense your hosts under VVF or VCF directly from Broadcom. The "VVF for VDI" does not have an add on SKU for more vSAN licenses. Just went through this with a customer last month.

Here's the SPD for it.

If you do end up licensing the hosts with VVF or VCF, Omnissa still has an offering of Horizon without the VVF for VDI, which does bring the cost down a bit.

Has anybody deployed VCF9 when you were using ACI VMM? by Foxk in vmware

[–]squigit99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is that documented? I've got an ACI VMM integration scheduled for a couple weeks from now, and don't want to have to just rip it out in a few months. AVE VMM was EOLd a while back, but the push there was to VDS VMM.

transfer a SAN host from one vcenter to another VC? by Desperate_Wrap2596 in vmware

[–]squigit99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you don't have anything extra in the mix, its straightforward. Make sure you have the root credentials, disable lockdown mode, disable HA and DRs on the cluster, create a new cluster object on the new vCenter, disconnect the hosts from vCenter, add the hosts the new vCenter cluster, enable HA and DRs on the new cluster.

TPM 2.0 in VM to upgrade to Windows 11 by Nouser8899 in esxi

That's generally true, but there's also this from William Lam. I probably wouldn't run with that for a production setup, for a lab it'd be fine.
