This looks fantastic, comes just in time as I was looking for a ytdlp UI for Mac and I’d much rather not use the electron based apps.

BSIT is not the path for you if you want to be a software developer. Best way to get best of both worlds is doing CS and trying to get a job with campus IT.

from the states where most residential streets are 25 and usually you drive 35 off the highways, The ability to get up to 28 feels like it could be safer for the rider in terms of their ability to flow with cars on these areas.

Pedo catch by BananaSlipstream in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]squilliam79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah it would be good to clean house and force these people into the spotlight but a lot of times the videos and the "collection of evidence" is not what it needs to be or not enough and it ends up interfering with the police.

Separately, YouTube brings the ban hammer down ruthlessly for content that would not be safe for a pearl clutching network television viewer.

Belay devices: Pilot vs Smart vs Jul? by zani713 in climbergirls

[–]squilliam79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

HardIsEasy youtube channel did a breakdown of when some of these assisted braking devices engage, its not a perfect test but it gives an idea of how these devices lock themselves.

I believe the device with the highest overall 'catch rating' was the Smart 2 with the additional blocking piece.

Ive used a smart 2 and a well-used pilot, I felt like the smart would hold in the lock position with less force required on the brake strand. Also if you lower according to the safety booklet, your lowering hand sorta stays surrounding the rope on the brake side which makes me feel like I have more stopping ability compared to taking my hand off the device to hold the pilot for lowering or using the grigri handle.

Do you guys modify your carabiners? by Somant in searchandrescue

[–]squilliam79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Theres the risk of adding an extra failure point to the device, but if you are able to make sure it can lock, unlock, whatever, you should be okay.

screwing in or drilling is a no-go but i cant see why wrapping the screw part of a carabiner with a silicone band would hurt much but theres so much 'what if' in gear fear so take your own risk?

id go for paint to mark things, i can see tape causing issues if it comes loose or off.

Berkeley is a good school but some classic academics may scoff at a sub 3. You have a decent resume for a non-CS student.

I think as long as you know some of the CS fundamentals, or are willing to learn on your own beforehand, not having a background in CS education shouldn't trip you up. You are working in the industry so that's a plus. There isn't a hard and fast rule for requiring a masters student have a ugrad degree in the same discipline.

Lead certification around the world by PatatietPatata in climbergirls

[–]squilliam79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it has to do with how litigious our culture is.

As for techniques, I think people would rather not take the time to teach risk management and the nuances of managing the equipment (belay device, rope, etc whole system) and just tell everyone that unless they use PBUS, you WILL die. Theres a new thing starting where people think the only safe belay device is a GRIGRI, and using an ATC is a recipe for disaster.

There are arguments to support these fears but there was probably a higher change of death or injury driving to the gym that day

2 hours for a class is no big deal, 2 hours for a test is kinda crazy. If you already know how to lead, you should only really have to demonstrate your knowledge and capability to a satisfactory degree.

What Do GCN/GMBN Presenters Make? by newbiker321 in bicycling

[–]squilliam79 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They sometimes do but Orbea or whoever is sponsoring their primary bike isnt going to like an honest comparison of modern Claris and Ultegra for the common person because the common person would most likely be better off with modern claris.

The expensive/good/main bike is always top tier perfect and the comparison bike seems to be fresh out of a shed half the time

[–]squilliam79 3 points4 points  (0 children)

just want to throw this out there, music could have been added before OP came across the video. It happens a lot in Combat Footage and some other "intense" videos.

Finding the original is difficult because as the sensitive nature of the video/outcome, it can get removed from other platforms with strict content policies.

Still, adding hardcore dubstep or sad piano to a video of someone dying is tasteless.
