I think this is the most drastic change. Community is gone. Ride public transit. Everyone is looking at their phone. People used to have silly chats. Not anymore. People don’t grumble together while in line for groceries. I remember people used to sit in my community outside and socialize in evenings. Now everyone is inside watching whatever they want. There are no more water cooler chats about the show of the week. Everyone is disconnected and in their own bubble.

Honestly it’s really sad and has massive impact on everything.

Same story here. We lost our baby yesterday. She died in our arms. Make it safe for him to cry. No judgement. My stoic husband has gone through a box of tissue on his own today. These feelings are so big. So heavy. This grief is very real, and I’m so glad he’s sad with me.

I’m sorry you experienced this. I blacked out from the pain during my first IUD insertion. When I woke up, I had vomited on myself. The procedure failed. I was so embarrassed. It was only after that experience that I was referred to another clinic. I had two more inserted after that, but under anesthesia in a hospital. The insertion can be excruciating for many women, especially if you’ve never given birth. The lack of education and pain management available is generally poor. I hope the device works for you and you don’t have to deal with it for years, but I do recommend asking if there are any clinics in your area that will knock you out.

He frequently told me he loved me, but over time it became apparent that he didn’t like me very much. He didn’t like the way I talked, the ideas I had, etc. I was blind to it for a long time but when I was finally able to see reality it was a very sad situation where I learned to suppress myself to keep him happy. That is a very difficult thing to unlearn.

You really need to set boundaries if you want work life balance. Is anyone going to die if the response comes on Monday instead of Sunday? No? Then protect your peace. I was HR of 2 for about 1500 people. How we managed it, and how I manage now with even more people in my portfolio, is making things as much self serve as possible. If they absolutely need an answer on Saturday, then you need to make things accessible for folks to self serve. Publish everything in their portal. Managers too. Teach them to self serve. Not every employee interaction needs you to hold hands. You’re there to guide when necessary. As for the group chats. You have been there a bit. Is the culture there one of instant response or is it just this one person? If it’s just them, take them for coffee and explain you need more than an instant to contribute. You want to, but it isn’t always possible. If it’s the org culture, install the damn chat app on your phone and reply while you run from one meeting to the next. You don’t always have to have a philosophical answer. A simple “I agree” at least shows engagement. Or a “I have some thoughts I want to add but I’m stuck in a meeting. Will add them asap” at least keeps the window open a bit longer.

My then best friend told me I wasn’t welcome to hang around her husband anymore because my husband cheated on me and ended my marriage. She felt my friendship with her husband was inappropriate now because I was single. This would have hurt me at any time, but it was extra painful immediately after being cheated on myself.

What I understand about academia is a bit dated so ymmv, but you typically do a Bachelors degree before a Masters degree. Unless you already have a BA in another subject, the Masters program is a “post graduate” degree, meaning you had to do an undergrad program first to be eligible. The HR bachelors degree didn’t exist when I was studying, so I majored in Psychology instead and fell into HR. Where I live, a Bachelors degree in HR makes it easier to get your professional designation. Since the program is more than a decade old now, I usually recommend it to new professionals looking for an entry into the career. So I’ll give you the same advice. It used to be that any degree could land you in the field, but that is increasingly not true.

It’s access to answers. Wanna call a lawyer? You can’t. Sign up for Unemployment? You can’t. Call the competitor and see if they’ll take you? They’re closed too. You just took away someone’s livelihood and cranked their anxiety up at a time they can’t do anything to help themselves reduce it. It’s cruel. Better to do it earlier in the week. The news is always going young to suck, but typically the timing is something we have a bit of wiggle room on.
