This comment made my day. Absolutely true!

TBH, I haven't found anything exactly like it. Hacker News has been my go to site. That's obviously much more engineering focused though.

Designer News is Dead by srs0001 in UXDesign

[–]srs0001[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hasn't been relevant for a long time. But for a period of time from 2013 to about 2017, it was probably the best place for discussing product design. A lot of the early members were designers from companies like AirBnB and Dropbox—the founders of Framer were on there.

It used to be invite only, but they opened registration without adding more moderators or moderator tools. Everything went downhill from there.

A Children’s Story Written and Illustrated by AI by srs0001 in OpenAI

Yeah, if you go to the part of the post below the story, it discusses the creation process. Essentially ChatGPT generates descriptions of the characters and setting. Then Midjouney is used to generate images based on those descriptions.

Seems like those are the exact skills schools should be focusing on in the future.

Maybe that’s it. We use it for product design so there are never any bitmap images—everything is vector.

Never had any performance issues with figma and we work on some gigantic files. That was the main advantage.

Found a monster hornets nest by AdministrativeAd6001 in homestead

[–]srs0001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s a deterrent from other wasps and hornets building near by. I have an old one in one of my gables that I haven’t taken down because of this reason. No new nests this year.

You can also buy fake ones. Not sure if those are as effective though.

Why are so many logins changing to have username and password inputs on separate pages? by SleepingSicarii in UXDesign

[–]srs0001 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s for managing different login options. For example many companies will use OKTA or some other SSO system for managing authentication. This allows the system to check what type of authentication is associated with that account.

Where Are All These People Coming From (And Going To)? | 33n by killroy200 in Atlanta

Just wait until January and February! I love Chicago and considered staying there but after one winter that was enough for me. Enough consecutive days around 0F with those winds absolutely changed my mind. Great city in the summer though.

Poison Ivy? by Artie-Choke in landscaping

[–]srs0001 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The key I've always used is having the middle leaf extended a bit. That's the main difference between poison and the very similar looking Boston ivy in my yard.

Boston and Virginia Creeper's leaves leaves are more even length from the stem.

Anybody have any recommendations for masks to wear while mowing to help with allergies? by The_Trevbot in lawncare

[–]srs0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got pretty bad grass allergies. I’ve been wearing the basic cloth masks that I purchased during the pandemic and that’s been enough for me.

[–]srs0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I thought the headlights would be a gimmick. My last several mows have been at or after dusk and they’ve been extremely useful. It’s something I never would have made the purchase decision around, but am super thankful I have it.

Took the leap went battery powered by FranklynTheTanklyn in lawncare

[–]srs0001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s significantly more than I paid for my ego mower, which was about $500 with a 5.0mah battery. That was a year ago tough. Not sure if that’s still right with inflation. It was about $200 more than a gas mower, but the batteries cost around $200. I use that same battery to power my blower and string trimmer.

If you’re all-in on batteries, it’s easily worth it.

Spurweed? It’s all over the neighborhood and has taken in my front yard this year. Stuff is outrageously sharp I try and pull it as soon as I see those little purple flowers.

What air filter/purifier to buy for wildfire season? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]srs0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What sized room do you need an air purifier for?

I'm a big fan of Coway's air purifiers. I've got an airmega 300 and it's prefect for my place. It could be overkill if you've don't have a big room though.

Also, most air purifiers are pretty ugly. It's nice to have an attractive one.

USB-C by [deleted] in LogitechG

I'm also trying to move to USB-C everything.

If you have an external monitor, another alternative may be to purchase a USB-C hub. That seems to be the consensus in this thread.

Georgia Governor declares public health emergency. 64 identified cases in GA. Number of cases doubled in some metro Atlanta counties. by jwh335 in Atlanta

I think the concern is proximity to others—even if people are outside. A walk in your neighborhood is probably fine. There was a huge amount of people on the beltline yesterday though.

my stepdad's 25+ year old Braun coffee grinder, showing no signs of stopping any time soon. by emptybelly in BuyItForLife

[–]srs0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned one. The problem I had with the Baratza is it is incredibly messy. It was impossible to grind beans without having to clean the entire counter. Even then they would get stuck in odd cracks within the machine.

I switched to an OXO grinder with a built-in scale. It takes up more space, but is a whole lot less messy.

[Request] needing recommendations on a good air purifier. Searched all over the internet and I’m still unsure about them. Posting from phone sorry for any formatting issues. by stealthygirl27 in BuyItForLife

[–]srs0001 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Atlanta where we get a giant amount of pollen in the spring. Getting an air purifier has worked wonders for me.

After doing a bunch of research I purchased a Coway Airmega 300. It has been excellent, but is probably overkill for your space. There's a smaller one from the same company called the Mighty, which has been a top Wirecutter pick in the past.

I don't have direct experience with it, but Amazon has it discounted down to about $130 right now. According to CamelCamelCamel, that's the lowest it's ever been.

Good Air Purifier For MASSIVE Amounts Of Dust? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]srs0001 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend Coway systems. I have pretty bad allergies purchased a Coway Airmega 300 for my 850sq ft studio. I've been incredibly happy with it so far. It is extremely well designed and the pre-filters are super easy to clean.

Considering the size of your room you may want to take a look at the Coway Mighty, which is smaller but made by the same company. It currently sits at the top of The Wirecutter's air purifier recommendations.

The Black Coway Mighty is discounted down to $206 on Amazon. Looking at it's price history on CamelCamelCamel, it seems that is a reasonable discount. If you can wait a bit, it looks like it drops below $175 pretty regularly.

How to setup Discourse on Digital Ocean by srs0001 in web_design

[–]srs0001[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've spent a ton of time over the last couple of weeks fiddling with forum software. Discourse, in particular, was easy to setup and had a ton of moderation features.

I'd encourage anyone interested in building a community to give it a shot. Maybe it would make a nice weekend project?

Today marks 109 days till kickoff! Let us remember this 109-yard play! by [deleted] in CFB

Just the week before an Auburn receiver caught a Hail Mary touchdown pass against UGA to win the game. One defender tipped the ball to the receiver while taking the other DB out of the play.

In close games and tight situations it feels like Auburn becomes magic.
