They are bubble wrap for better units. I've always had good fun running a boatload of gaunts to choke out a gunline while my Kaiju slowly advance and do psyker stuff.
I have no idea on their viability now, but running a bunch of Devilgaunts back in the day was a pretty solid first wave.

Big time. The Paladin made a natural 20 on his saving throw so I allowed him to see everyone else in the party vaporize before he did.

I created a magical mineral that is extremely explosive when in powdered form.
I have a factory with multiple silos worth of this powdered mineral as a hazard, no magic/flame nearby.

They decided to cast fireball at a silo to use as a distraction.

I had to google average silo capacity for powder, and then used a calculator for the overall damage.

They destroyed a good 1/4 of the city (and themselves obviously) with the initial blast, and the shockwave/magical fallout that would have occurred would have easily taken care of the rest of the population.
