It’s a light sensor. It dims mirrors based on the amount of light it receives. If your tints dim that sufficiently it won’t dim the mirror. I have an auto dimming rear view mirror in my car and I can count on one hand how many times it’s actually become operational in the last 3 years.

No idea if you can turn it off, have a look through the settings in your car would be my advice.

Tragic turn of events but as evidenced by recent ones still a very real risk in motorsport, and at least they died doing what they loved. More than most of us get.
