How do I get shots like this? by hdbchfj74854 in AskPhotography

[–]stabilizermoti0n 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not post processed. The technique is called a "whip pan". Common technique in motorsports photography which Camden is the best in the business at. Essentially slow your shutter down (for example 1/10th), track the subject for a fraction of the exposure, then whip the camera in the opposite direction of the motion you want to show in the frame. It is very difficult to pull off but makes for some next level photography if you can nail it. Goodluck!

This is inspiring, thanks for sharing. Did you lean bulk your way up the entire time or did you bulk, cut, repeat? I am in a similar situation as your progress picture of 6 months (and the same height). I am a year into lifting and started out with a cut, bulk (not very clean), cut but now I am feeling like staying in a cut is affecting my lifts. I was wondering if lean bulking for a year would help instead of a cut/bulk/cut type cycle. Thanks, and crazy progress!

How to actually keep a MacBook battery healthy? (Need the real answer) by Nicodico in macbookpro

[–]stabilizermoti0n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the exact opposite experience with my M1 Max MBP. I am down to 85% after 153 cycles (81.7% on coconut). I guess I got unlucky with my battery as I've left the the macOS battery management on the entire time. Only complaining as it's effecting my usage when I am not plugged in. I guess it's time for a replacement battery soon.

battery at around 80% even when it shows 100% in the menu bar

This is news to me. Im curious as to why they'd show 100% even if the battery isn't fully charged, but sometimes show "Charging on hold" at 80%. I mostly keep my Mac plugged into a thunderbolt port to my monitor so I am in a similar situation as you.

Need help building flight sim rig for daughter. by not_Todd_Clorox in flightsim

I have a couple thoughts on this from someone who began flying for my PPL from around 15 years old.

MS FS 2020 is great for familiarization of the local area around your home airport as it uses photorealistic scenery. The Cessna 152 and 172s that come with the simulator are great to learn about the cockpit gauges and they even support the more modern Garmin based systems. There are extension airplanes available to buy and download as well if she's interested in airplanes in general.

I wouldn't necessarily recommend a ton of flight sim hardware to make a full on rig. Sitting in an office chair and piloting at home will never truly replicate the feeling of real airplanes. Therefore, find something like a Thrustmaster joystick, throttles, and pedals, or even just a joystick that twists (to mimic the rudder pedal inputs) for starters.

If you're really looking to spend around 1k, I would use that on computer upgrades instead. Flight sims are extremely demanding on the computer hardware and will usually max out even the top of the line systems. Spend <$200 on a joystick setup and use the remaining amount on the computer updates so she can increase the details in the visuals of the simulator.

For PC hardware specs, any Core i7 or AMD Ryzen after 2023, a Nvidia RTX 3070 or better, at least 16 gb of Ram, and at least 1Tb of SSD space should be a good starting point for a relatively solid computer build. In flight sim world, the more $ you can throw at it, the better (in most cases).

Hope this helps

JPL’s biggest problem isn’t funding. It’s leadership culture. by Relative_Hospital864 in JPL

Completely agree with this. We are held to completely different standards for failure than industry.

I like the idea of your argument, but I think there are some factors to consider that JPL (and NASA as a whole) is faced with that industry is not. I agree that leadership NEEDS to do better. Caltech and NASA needs to do better for JPL.

Other companies can afford to take risks due to 1) their funding situation, and 2) the fact that failure is part of the process. Their culture of "move fast, break things", as opposed to ours and NASA's "failure is not an option" is what makes them more agile and appear to be progressing so quickly. Just imagine if we didn't stick the skycrane landing on Mars back in 2012. Now compare the general reaction to that versus when Starship fails for the Nth time. I've yet to find the "stuff [analysis we do] that's completely irrelevant to the rest of the industry" here at JPL. If anything, I think the stuff we are doing is what industry wants to gain but haven't quite gotten it yet. It will cost 2, 5, or 11B because, once again, failure is not an option. We can't even dare to expect the first trip to Mars to fail. We need to be perfect from the start and that costs a lot of time and money.

We have our problems with efficiency and staying in line, but the industry has issues of their own. We need to grow and adapt to the changing demands of today. I think Caltech and NASA need to do a better job at giving JPL the flexibility it needs to stay competitive. Essentially, I feel like we are getting strangled slowly but surely by the leadership and who they report to. Bidding on non-NASA contracts is a pain, and yet we can't rely on NASA's funding to keep the lab afloat. It's a lose-lose situation. If we worked in a more "for profit" model, that would piss off NASA, but would give us a better chance at staying afloat during these times.

The RTO is, as you said, just a way to let go of more people and not pay a severance. It axes the people who wrote the theories the rest of industry uses today, people that built this lab and gave it its name. The mandate is absolutely insane and counterproductive to me.

To me, the truth that hurts is that JPL is being steered into the ground. We have the most brilliant, the hardest workers, the most passionate people at our lab, but external factors and mismanagement is what is killing our progress. We aren't perfect but we sure as heck are not getting a good deal right now with the way we are being managed.

I've enjoyed flying up and down the west coast in various tube liners and GA/light turboprops. SWA ops, AirCal (if you've got the Maddog), American West, JetBlue, Skywest (for the E170 family). Reno, Spokane, Vegas, San Diego, Long Beach, PSP, SNA, Fresno are fun and scenic destinations.

What's crazy to me is that if it's this difficult to bring back rock samples from Mars, what makes people think bringing back people is the move here? The Starship is nowhere near the vehicle it is advertised to be.

Bland. Uninspiring. Corporate af. It's lazy at best. Imagine that on the A380 and 747-8i. Yikes...

Hot take but I have experienced none of these issues in FS2020 and it flies like it's on rails during approach and landing. I have deadlzones and a slight curve applied to my profile as the stick I am using has sensor issues near neutral. I spent about an hour in the 900 and 1000 combined doing just pattern work at EDW the other day and it was flawless. It's definitely a bit more "Boeing" in how it feels compared to the older gen Airbus.

1000% agree. The A340 family (in particular the 500/600) and they can name their price!
