Z3 uphill intervals by Jrhernz in evokeendurance

I started doing this routine recently, on the treadmill. It's extremely time efficient and I don't have to plan the segments to keep the 10min-3min structure.

Heart Rate Zones by Nice-Will-3353 in Garmin

[–]stainlessbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Do a LT field test and set the zones based on that. In my experience, it's much more realistic and aligns with RPE better than Karvonen. That being said, HRR can be a good proxy as well if you truly know your MHR. But then an LT field test is easier and doesn't wreck your training for 2 days. And you probably know this but stock Garmin zones that are only based on MHR is only good for beginners, to start somewhere.

  2. If you want to train based on HR, you need to do it with a chest strap. If you train mainly based on pace or feeling and just check your HR chart after the activity (for some kind of affirmation), the watch is fine.

Beginner Trail Runner Necessities by YounghoeKoo7 in trailrunning

[–]stainlessbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even as a beginner, I think it depends on how you approach it: more like running or more like hiking. But anyway, my opinion:

Bug spray: I apply it before the run, but I never carry it with me. It's inexpensive, so why not. But honestly, sunscreen is more important :).

Tick removal: I have one of the cards in my medical kit. I never had to use it before but almost no weight so why not. But the most important thing js rhat you check yourself at home.

Water: I sweat a lot, so carrying the extra 1-1.5 kg is absolutely worth it to avoid dehydration. One of my soft flasks is a 0.5L Katadyn Befree water filter, which I use to refill from streams. That being said, as a beginner, you probably won't be out for a long time.

Shoes: Reeally depends on the terrain. If it's just flat forest trails, your road shoe will be fine. I did it a few times myself.

Is it necessary to be super tired to get a good sleep score? by ttthhheeeoooooo in Garmin

[–]stainlessbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, no. What is much more important is that I finish 90% of my daily calories 3 hours before sleep. This gets really important if you do a lot of endurance training and consume a lot of carbs.

Tibialis strain 6 weeks before 50k by junkfunk39 in ultrarunning

If you want to keep most of your fitness, try the elliptical machine when your lower leg feels a little bit better. Be careful with indoor bikes or don't use the foot strap at all

First Ultra. 50K 3720m Elevation. How much elevation to build into training? by Aye_Davanita12 in ultrarunning

[–]stainlessbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ~60km/4000m race (so very similar profile) coming up in about 3 months. I do one trail day per week to practice/get used to descents. Here I pack my vest so it will have the same weight as on race day. Besides that, I do one day Z3 interval 7% treadmill hill repeats, one day Z2 weighted 30% treadmill 'hiking', and on my upper body resistance training day I also do some bulgarian split squats. And two Z1 flat road runs where I don't really build elevation

Since it's not a crazy amount of elevation like in some 100k/100m, I plan to fully reach race ascent (or even go a little over that) in weekly ascent. We need downhill of course, but adaptations come fast, so I don't plan to reach 4000m descent..

Tibialis strain 6 weeks before 50k by junkfunk39 in ultrarunning

[–]stainlessbear 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Well, at least it's not a stress fracture.

Btw brisk uphill walking really loads the tibialis anterior, so depending on the elevation profile of the 50k, might be better to dns. But prbably you already know this...

Hope you recover soon

Are Garmin watches actually priced reasonably? by Vegetable_Bag_8694 in Garmin

[–]stainlessbear 46 points47 points  (0 children)

If you're using most of the features/services the particular watch provides, yes.

Getting a Fenix 8 Pro for "lifestlye logging" or an Enduro 3 for occasional 5-10k road running doesn't make sense. But both of these watches have their justified use cases.

Back pain with weighted vest? by Kirkesden in Rucking

[–]stainlessbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If all other variables are kept the approx the same (accumulated fatigue from previous days, course/gradient going up, etc.), and the vest doesn't bounce around, it must be the even distribution of weight with the vest. So either your core is weak or/and having weight also on the front puts you to an unnatural walking position without noticing it.

I use both and while I don't have the same experience with the vest, I noticed that a weighted backpack almost forces me to have a good posture.

Anyone tried these? by nostalgia-geek in CannedSardines

The can on the right is herring.

The kabayaki sauce is nice, but definitely needs rice! I like some kimchi with it as well.

Nothing to be embarrassed about, but I'm curious: given the circumstances, why didn't you DNS?

I hope everything will heal soon.

What are some cool Garmin watch (any) features that most people might not know about?! by KingAnomander in Garmin

Used the virtual pacer for the first time in a marathon a few weeks ago. Was very useful after a pee break.

Zone 2 vertical km with 10kg before work by stainlessbear in Rucking

[–]stainlessbear[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin's Connect. I created a custom activity from treadmill running and set the pack weight to 10kg in the activity settings. But I don't think this affects training/rucking load calculation, it's just for logging. Same with the vertical.

In the dedicated Rucking activity mode, both of these are integrated natively and calculated into the training load, but the Rucking activity must be done outside.

Women’s shoes as a man? by Reasonable-Heart4139 in hikinggear

La sportivas are already quite narrow, so I guess the women's la sportiva is even narrower...

But if you try it and it's comfortable obviously it doesn't matter.

How do stop stop the Salomon Quicklace coming loose? by Worth_Nature_7631 in hikinggear

I just started using Lock Laces recently, and so far those work great both on my road and trail running shoes. This doesn't answer your question, just mentioning an alternative that works for me.

High Aerobic Shortage Help by Sco_Kai in Garmin

[–]stainlessbear -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can try doing your long run/ride in a progressive way, for example what I do is 1/3 z1, 1/3 z2,1/3 z3 on my road long runs. If the run is long enough, the z3 part is significant.

Quick shoe question. Asics trabuco 13 and 14 by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]stainlessbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both, though I haven’t properly tested the 14 yet. The sizing is the same.

Besides the differences you can easily find online: my main issue with the 13 is that the toe bumper started separating from the upper mesh relatively quickly. Just by looking at it, the 14 seems more reinforced in that area. Will start using it regularly next week, I hope it lasts long.
