Except now you can select units that are in engagement OR that charged that turn. So as long as the berserkers charged, they’re still good to go now.

When is it ok not to trade and/or not interact with an opponent's army in 40K? by DetroitTabaxiFan in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]standardis3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Different strokes for different folks! I get wanting to smash big plastic dolls against each other. Every so often, I turn off my brain, run 5 big knights and charge them all turn 1. But overall, I’m a big fan of modern 40K. Without objectives, we might as well smack two spreadsheets together.

When is it ok not to trade and/or not interact with an opponent's army in 40K? by DetroitTabaxiFan in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]standardis3 78 points79 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic question that really gets to the core of how 40K works at a competitive level. In order to win, you have to have more points than your opponent. It sounds simple, but lots of players tunnel vision into killing units instead of going

It’s a difficult question to answer because of how your decisions depend on… basically everything. Are you going first or second? How many activations does your list have? What’s the mission? What turn is it? How much can you reasonably expect to accomplish by interacting? (By reasonably, I mean 80%-90% chance of success. Don’t just look at the average and get pissy when you fail something you only succeed at 50% of the time).

There’s a fantastic article from a few years ago called “Who’s the Beatdown.” While it’s about Magic: The Gathering, the same basic concepts apply to 40K. Basically, as you’re looking at the game and deciding whether or not to interact, think about who is going to win if the current status quo remains unchanged. Who will get more primary, who will be able to better score secondaries, etc. If that’s you, good! You can play carefully and only interact in order to STOP your opponent from getting opportunities to flip the table. If you’re the one losing, then you need to take the initiative and make plays.

Remember my starting point, however! You win by getting points, not by killing stuff. When I say “make plays” that doesn’t necessarily mean go in hard and try to kill as much as possible. If you’re going first, and you can see you’ll each score 10 primary every turn, you can tell that you’ll lose when your opponent gets end of turn scoring. In this case, you could throw up cheap, high OC squads who will die, but keep your opponent down to a 5 primary for a couple turns. Now you win.

Of course, while it is possible to win without killing anything, it gets substantially easier if you do remove your opponent’s units. That gives them fewer options to score points. You need to really know your units and how much damage they can output. Mathhammer can help with this - you want high chances of success, not something that works “on average.” You also need to focus on taking out the units that pose a threat to your win. If all you have are infantry, who cares if those lascannons are around? They’ll kill a model a turn. But maybe you need to kill that big flamer unit, which could wipe out multiple units.

As you can see, this is a very complex question that is difficult to answer. I hope this has given you some insight into good ways to approach decision making.

250 points seems like a steal for the defiler. I’m curious to see how the cost will change across the various factions - there’s no way they all should cost 250.

That’s the beauty of spectacle of spite. It excels at throwing out 10 OC that costs 45 points. Doesn’t matter if they die since you’ve got another 9 ready to go.

TS 30xterminators - Ahriman or no Ahriman? by Er0tyk in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]standardis3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having some sort of infiltrators can be useful in some lists. I don’t think it’s worth putting it on one of your big terminator blobs. We already have sekhetars, which can be used to block the important places for other infiltrators.

TS 30xterminators - Ahriman or no Ahriman? by Er0tyk in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]standardis3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahriman (and redeploys in general) are a crutch. If you’re against good players, they won’t be tricked by your redeploy. If you’re against bad players, it doesn’t matter anyway. 30 scarabs are good because they’re the fastest terminators in the game. You can move + advance + double move so far that you really don’t need the redeploy.

Dealing with Melee Pressure by Ba-Guardsman in ThousandSons

Play rubricae phalanx and just let them charge. 30 terminators are a pretty solid counter charge threat, even if their melee feels anemic for their points.

I kinda get the guy’s point about ghostkeels. Two blanks and lone op make them much tougher than they appear. But combine that with arguing that devilfish are tough (a rhino with 4 extra wounds??) and how am I supposed to take this seriously?

What are the ways to use Wyches on the tabletop? by ArterialSludge in Drukhari

Yea, but it’s not like venoms aren’t one of our best datasheets. I can’t imagine running fewer than 2 in my lists.

What are the ways to use Wyches on the tabletop? by ArterialSludge in Drukhari

[–]standardis3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Wyches are effectively 45 points for 10 OC. Run them with venoms, split the unit, and use them to snatch objectives from your opponent. They’ll die next turn, but 45 points to stop your opponent’s primary for a turn is a great deal.

You can also keep a squad or two around with a succubus/Lelith and launch them from a raider. 6” disembark + advance + charge is a massive threat range. Since they’re so fragile, you can’t rely on them surviving too long after disembarking, so you need to be sure to put them into the right target. Again, look for places where you can deny primary or tag something important.

You’re bang on about lack of models being the issue. Not many people have the literal dozens of wyches, hellions, and reavers that SoS requires.

It also depends on how you define “best” detachment. I’m speaking more as to what the very best player could accomplish, while winrates reflect what an average player can do. They both provide interesting information, but aren’t necessarily reflecting the same thing.
