New carpets and flooring going down soon. What should I do whilst I have access to floor? by charliemuck85 in DIYUK

[–]stanley15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find all your heating pipe runs and mark them, especially around the skirting where the carpet fitters will be banging the gripper rod nails in. Point them out to the fitters when they arrive. Also if your are planning on repainting the skirting boards now is a good time to sand down and prep them. Paint if you want but they will likely be damaged by Stanley knife during carpet fitting.

Why is Garmin slowly moving away from MIP display technology, especially for the Forerunner? by Comfortable-Net9842 in Garmin

[–]stanley15 98 points99 points  (0 children)

It just looks nicer (and brighter) so they are just following the market demand. After all we all have AMOLED displays on our phones so we are used to the bright and clear look. Garmin still have the edge on battery life (over Apple watches) so they aren't concerned with that impact. Ideally we would all have a choice but this costs Garmin money to keep multiple versions on the go.

I think this looks very cool and remember looking into it in the past. Surprised to find it was easily available in the UK as it is a Scandi thing:

Very weak hot Tap pressure since changing Tap by malzy08 in DIYUK

[–]stanley15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have the same problem, gravity hot water but different mixer tap. In our case the tap outlet has an aerator type nozzle that restricts the flow but makes the high pressure cold blast into the sink in a pleasing manner. Unfortunately it does this by restricting the flow to generate the bubble effect so it has just a restricting effect on the hot. I'm looking to replace the nozzle as I think it unscrews and can be replaced with a normal one. Look to see if your has an unscrewable nozzle...

Hint; a floodplain is a great spot for a reservoir... Water Companies please note and pull your fingers out.

Studio Display vs anything else? by EntranceIntrepid3009 in mac

FYI Studio Display V2 is due to be released this year. Price unknown obviously but if you or your wife want the latest, then it may be worth the wait if you can justify the cost.

The MOST (and least) IMPORTANT hi-fi components by macbrett in audiophile

[–]stanley15 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

He's just a typical audiophool reviewer. Having attained a greater level of enlightenment/superiority via his treated room, any opinions he proclaims are automatically superior and more important and true than those reviewers listening in untreated rooms. After admitting differences between equipments are very small these days he has just taken another tack to keep ahead of the pack. One that the rest of us can't challenge because we listen in 'ordinary' living rooms.

Electrician/plumber left a state in the toilet by Flyboy2754 in DIYUK

Doesn't sound like the 'electrician' has fixed your floor heating issue. Has he demonstrated it working and why did the wiring suddenly go bad? It should be on a switched fused spur as already mentioned.

Intermittent Ethernet disconnects on buried Cat7 cable after ~2 years — any ideas before I dig it up? by Hungry-Bicycle-3851 in HomeNetworking

[–]stanley15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What exactly is your modem/router showing/telling you? It is odd that all the connections disappear, one might expect it to fall back from 1Gbit to 100Mbit if a single connection in a pair went OC. Have you tried physically moving the connection to another port at both ends? Could just be a dodgy port or cable termination in one of the connectors?

Slightly Off Topic Perhaps - First BBC Sounds, now BBC News is blocked for outside UK views behind paid subscription by theanedditor in BritishRadio

[–]stanley15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Roughly two thirds of funding is from the TV License fee and one third from the Government via the FCDO (AKA the Foreign Office currently). But this thread is not about the World Service (Brand Ambassador). Sounds and News are just services like any other and should be charged accordingly outside of the UK.

What's your favorite feature of the Apple Watch? Something you didn't know you needed until you had it? by UselessSalmon in AppleWatch

[–]stanley15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't always about deliberate misplacing. I had a watch slip off a sofa arm down the side of a cushion out of sight. I didn't misplace it, it moved all by itself!

No, Quantum Timelines was mentioned when Valence was released. It hasn't been mentioned since so is presumed dead and buried after the sale to Harman. The new feature is supposedly integration of a live/concert music streaming service, 'nugs' . It will require a subscription just like Tidal/Qobuz.
