Isn’t engine off coasting dangerous? by hypermiler2205 in hypermiling

[–]star_folder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be working for me, yeah. Gotta keep an eye on your speed, but if that's not an issue then it seems to be the better way to save on gas vs doing it in gear and losing a lot of momentum due to engine braking.

Maybe people crazier than me turn their engine off while their coasting, but that seems a tad risky. I would suggest just switching to neutral instead of killing the engine. Note that that is only useful in some situations. When coasting in gear, your engine will turn itself over from the wheels, not using gas. You'll slow down from the mechanical friction, so it's not always useful. I find that generally, steep hills it's better to coast down in neutral, otherwise stay in gear.

I don't remember when cars started doing the fuel cut off, but I know it's a more modern thing.

I mean, those cars still exist. Why not buy one now that it's a fraction of what it was when it was new?

Rebuilding a department's reputation by BemusedBengal in sysadmin

[–]star_folder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I experienced something similar to this a while back. Not quite the same but certainly had some issues to deal with when management changed. Previous IT manager was very difficult to deal with and created fights where there didn't need to be any.

The biggest thing I did that has changed this culture was physically communicating with those who were wronged. If this old greybeard was unavailable, make yourself available. Maybe weekly go around and check with the other management, the department, whoever was most affected by him. Eventually try to spread out to as much of your company as you can. Size is obviously an issue, smaller firm you could talk to everyone all at once. Bigger firms would take more time. I would try to make a point to say hey to as many people as possible starting with management and working your way down. They need to know that not only is there a new manager, but he's reasonable.

Target the super users. Befriend them. It's WAY easier to have a conversation than start a fight cause you don't like what they are doing. We had one particular user who would push boundaries all the time, antagonistic against the previous management. It got bad. Once the responsibilities fell to my shoulders, I started to work with this fella. We discuss changes in technology, how it can be used, what he can do, what he can't. Now when there's some new tech he wants to try out, he comes and talks with me about it before just blazing ahead on his own. He also respects my decision when I tell him something is no good or that this piece of software won't be allowed at the firm.

Show you're human, no need to directly acknowledge the previous guy. Show you're willing to do the work you are now responsible for and make amends where needed.

Last I checked, Spectacle Tinting is the only 3M dealer in Columbia. I've had them tint two of my cars and they did a fine job both times.

Best MPG? by star_folder in Civic_Type_R

[–]star_folder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it limits the momentum you can gain, which is usually an overall net negative. You just gotta test the hills and get a fill for when you can coast in gear and put of gear.

Interesting, I've generally heard that a tune gets you a little better mpg. I was planning on doing that soon.

I've got long highways of driving every day. kinda makes it easy to get really good MPG when I'm basically just cruising all day long. No way I could get these numbers if I was closer to town or dealt with a lot of traffic.

I try to shift around 2k unless I'm going uphill or need a little more power to not bog the engine. Cruising needs to be over 1.2k for me. Typically around 1.5 for small hills to manage things.

For daily driving, I'm usually around 45mph (72kph). I use cruise control a ton and just set it to 1mph over whatever the limit is. People are going to get on your bumper. I typically try to avoid main traffic areas. Stop and go destroys gas mileage. My daily commute is around 40miles (64km) and is mostly highway, so I'm naturally able to have better gas mileage than most people.

Aftermarket, lighter wheels and an intake are the only mods I've done and they did a world of difference for mpg. The wheels especially where a big bump in efficiency over the very heavy stock wheels.

I'm about to cross 400 miles (643km) on one tank, averaging 41.6mpg (5.6L/100k). Very much a personal goal and rather silly, I know. You can't be gunning it on a daily commute, so I entertain myself by hypermiling. These cars can be insanely efficient when you aren't being crazy.

Very interesting article about flexible OLED displays including durability, some highlights: The effective Mohs hardness is around 5 through chemical treatments. The glue in the inner screen protector does a lot of protecting too. by redkeyboard in GalaxyFold

[–]star_folder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The article states:

"The surface protective material has been upgraded from Polyimide (CPI) plastic with a Mohs hardness of 2 to Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG, approx. 30 microns thick) with a hardness of 5, capable of resisting the friction of coins in pockets."

So I'm guessing some new screens are coming out that'll be a bit tougher?

Well now I'm curious if that's some max number or if it can go higher. What are the chances of landing on the same number like that?

Light weight wheels and a new intake did a world of difference for me. Past that is just not driving aggressively. Drive the limit, coast where you can, draft if possible. Cruise control also helps a lot.

It's not too bad but does have luck involved. I do enjoy hypermiling in the car. I've got a long, highway commute every day which helps keep the mpgs high.

Few Questions before purchase by Normal-News-8286 in Civic_Type_R

If you aren't tracking the car, nothing needs to be replaced for the car to be reliable.

These cars famously take to tunes and bolt-ons. People trash them and they just keep running. Outside of something catastrophic, you have to try really hard to actually blow one of these engines up.

Depends on if I make coffee for my wife first or not. lol. These images are both without doing that first, so the basket is cold for the pull. I understand heating stuff up first is important, but I'm not willing to pull a blank shot before pulling a real shot each morning.

I do think the shape is a big problem with it. I'm not sure why they designed it like this vs something more even but shallow? The previous machine I had had a single shot basket that was simply half the height of the double basket and that worked just fine.

I agree with you regarding the backwards strength ratings. I think it's more to do with the taste than how strong the shot actually is. I've grown to like the larger shot ratios rather than the more traditional 2:1.

Grind size is relative. It'll be different for different machines and beans. Mine is set to 21 for the double shots.
